(707) Secretary: Jeannie LeMesurier, Ph.D. (707) Treasurer and CPA Chapter Rep: Michael Pinkston, Ph.D. (707) CE Coordinator: Carol Weser, Ph.D. (707) Newsletter Editor: Joe Puentes, Psy.D. It has been a pleasure serving in the role of President this year. I wish you all a joyful holiday season, and a prosperous and exciting new year. Continuing in my practice of providing you with practical information in my message, below I highlight some of the local mental health services in our community. Our county has long awaited the return of inpatient mental health services, and I am happy to spread the word that the Aurora Santa Rosa Hospital has recently opened its doors (1287 Fulton Road in Santa Rosa). This is a 95-bed facility that is currently accepting inpatients, and will soon have specialty geriatric and adolescent programs. Aurora is also offering substance abuse treatment with medical detox services. In addition, they are providing both intensive outpatient treatment (3 hours/day for 3 days/week) and a partial hospitalization program (individualized program, with availability M-F, 8:30-3:30). These additional services can function as a needed transition period after inpatient stays. The intake telephone number at Aurora is (707) I also want to remind everyone about services that continue to provide necessary mental health services in Sonoma County: St. Joseph Outpatient Behavioral Health Services at 405 W College Ave in Santa Rosa (707) , which provides an array of partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient mental health treatment programs (including a dual diagnosis program, chronic pain program, and a specialty senior care program), and Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) at 3322 Chanate Road in Santa Rosa (707) , which is open 24/7 to handle mental health crises, short term stay/stabilization, and evaluation for inpatient placements. 2
3 Early Career Psychologists Social Hour and New Subcommittee By: Linda Baggett, Ph.D. We are proud to introduce the newly formed Early Career Subcommittee of the RPA! This subcommittee was born from a shared desire among Early Career Psychologists (ECPs) and more established RPA members to increase engagement in the RPA among ECPs. It is our sincere hope that doing so will enhance RPA membership for all its members, by facilitating networking and mentoring, creating programming targeted to issues ECPs face, and making it easier for ECPs to connect with their fellow ECPs and veterans alike. We have many ideas that we feel energized about and will be working on in coming months. Please stay tuned to future newsletters for details as these plans come together and by all means, please contact us with ideas and feedback. The subcommittee is comprised of four ECP RPA members: Cammy Michel, Ph.D., Sil Machado, Ph.D., Joe Puentes, Psy.D. and is chaired by myself. We d like for you to get to know us a bit, with the hope that we will get to know you through our future programming and events. Cammy is originally from Denver, Colorado. She has a strong love affair with the mountains and continues to miss the Rocky Mountains and all environments above 5,000 feet with great fervor. She moved to California (sight unseen) to UCSC for her undergraduate education and gradually migrated North, ending up staying in Sonoma County to complete her doctorate and raise her family. She wears many hats professionally, working at the SSU Counseling and Psychological Services, private practice, and consulting with Vericare at several skilled nursing facilities. Outside of 3 work, she spends her time mothering her 15 year old son and 11 year old daughter. Her family invariably spends a great deal of time telling jokes, making up songs, and goofing around. Sil is a Sonoma County native and was born and raised in Petaluma. His family is from the Azores - nine tiny islands in the middle of the Atlantic. He is a licensed psychologist in private practice and community clinic settings, where he specializes in depth psychotherapy with individuals and couples dealing with anxiety- and mood-related concerns, trauma, LGBT issues, shame, and grief. He is also on the core faculty of the Sanville Institute for Clinical Social Work and Psychotherapy and is on the adjunct faculty in the Department of Counseling at Sonoma State University. In addition to his professional work, he enjoys reading and writing poetry. Joe grew up in Illinois before moving to Southern California to complete his undergraduate and graduate work. He and his wife recently moved to Sonoma County two years ago and have fallen in love with the area. Professionally, Joe works at Counseling and Psychological Services at SSU, and maintains a private practice focusing on sports psychology and general mental health work with both teens and adults. Outside of his work, he enjoys watching and playing sports as well as reading, eating good food, and spending time in nature. (cont. p. 4)
4 (ECP Subcommittee, cont d) I am semi-local, having grown up in Humboldt County, just a few hours up the 101. After living in Indiana, Memphis, and Long Beach for graduate school and internship, I have settled in the Sonoma County area and am excited to call it home for the long haul. I recently completed my fellowship at the VA clinic here in Santa Rosa (my 5 th year with VA) and am enjoying some restorative time off, while I search for the right employment opportunity. I specialize in working with trauma, anger management, and sexual intimacy issues. In my spare time, I love cooking and eating delicious food, hiking and spending time in nature, and am training for a half marathon. Though the subcommittee is still in its formative stages, we are excited to announce our first social event planned for early This event will welcome all ECPs and our hope is it will be a chance to connect, network, and discuss your needs and interests, so that we are able to plan other RPAwide events in the future. The RPA board members will also be in attendance, as they are highly committed to supporting ECP-focused endeavors and want to meet everyone. Details on the exact time and location will be announced in December via - so keep an eye out for this information. We hope to have a great turnout so that we can continue to host events like this. Time to Renew Your 2014 Membership Online Full Members pay $75 prior to Jan 1, and $90 after January 1. All members not renewing by February 1 will be dropped from membership, and there will be an additional late fee for reinstating membership. 5 RPA...Mark Your Calendars! PSYCHOLOGISTS are going BIRDING? HOW TWEET IT IS!!!...Family and Significant Others Welcome... Sunday, January 25th, :45am to 11am followed by brunch together. Great Blue Heron by Alan D. Wilson, No experience necessary. Just bring yourself and your binoculars, comfortable walking shoes, layered clothing and water. Field guides if you have them. Family and significant others are welcome too. So as not to frighten the birds, children need to stay with their family and the group and maintain gentle movement and quiet conversation. It should be a day of pure fun together. The trail is flat and relaxed. Fall and Winter seasons bring tens of thousands of migratory waterfowl down the Pacific Flyway to local marshes for the winter. We should see at least two to three dozen species of ducks, geese, herons, raptors and many others. The migratory population joins local species that actually breed locally. Many birds are easy to see without binoculars, but binoculars are recommended. Jeff will also bring two highpower spotting scopes. Heavy rain cancels. If weather looks questionable, phone Jeff Martin at home after 7:30 am the day of the trip, and his voice mail will advise if cancelled. Our leader is RPA colleague Jeff Martin who took us out on a similar trip last year. He is an experienced birder, wildlife educator, and videographer who has led programs for Point Reyes National Seashore, School Groups, a college class on Safari in East Africa, and numerous other programs. Along the way, Jeff will explain everything from how to adjust Walk leader: Jeff Martin, Ph.D. your binoculars to the particulars of bird identification and interesting behavioral facts. Directions to the Marsh: Shollenberger Marsh is a short drive off Hwy 101. Take the Lakeville off ramp and proceed East (Southeast) to Cader Lane and turn right. Keep going till it ends at the parking lot for the preserve. Mark your calendars. RSVPs requested but not required. Call or Jeff Martin to RSVP at [email protected] or (home phone). If you aren't sure then just show up. We meet at 8:45am at the parking lot at Shollenberger Marsh in Petaluma and start our adventure walk at 9am promptly. We finish about 11am. Afterwards, we brunch together at nearby Sheraton Hotel Restaurant on Lakeville at Hwy 101, Petaluma. 5

(staff, Kaiser, Santa Rosa, Child, adolescent and family psychotherapy) and Cori Herzig, Psy.D. (Program Director, Fostering Connections TLC Child and Family Services) Defending Against Psychic Annihilation: Challenges in Treating Individuals With Developmental Trauma Disorder Information will be presented to help in treating individuals who have suffered repeated traumatic events as a child or adolescent, either directly with a family member, or in which the inadequate response of caregivers complicated the response to the traumatic event(s). The experience of this kind of trauma gets interwoven into the developing concept and experience of self and other. Dr. Crossleysmith and Dr. Herzig will present a very brief overview of the concept of developmental trauma disorder and its treatment. The bulk of the presentation time will be spent on long-term therapy case presentations, one a child/adolescent case with a focus on expressive art and sand-tray, the other an adolescent/young adult case with a focus on dreams. April 16 th, 2014 NEW TIME: now 6:30pm at Union Hotel on Mission Blvd in Santa Rosa, 1.5 CEs optional Presenter: Shoshana Bennett, author, Pregnant on Prozac, Postpartum Depression For Dummies, Co-Author, Healthy Mothers, Healthy Kids, Co-Author, Beyond the Blues, A Guide to Understanding and Treating Prenatal and Postpartum Depression. Etiology of the disorders, risk factors, barriers to treatment, and collaboration of the professional team will be discussed, as well as conventional and alternative treatment modalities. 6
7 New member introduction: Shoshana Bennett, Ph.D. I'm Shoshana Bennett, psychologist and author. My first credentials were in the field of Special Education, and I taught various classes at community colleges in the SF Bay Area. After surviving two lifethreatening postpartum depressions after the births of both my children, I founded an organization which supported those suffering from perinatal mental health disorders. Since 1989, my focus has been training medical and mental health professionals, plus writing books on the topic. Although for years I worked in person, for the last eight years I've offered consultations through phone and other technologies to pregnant and postpartum women worldwide. Photograph, 1933 A photograph dated You are nearly my age there, a couple years older. Your look is amber and sweet, the smile on your face like a secret, an untold happy ending. Inside of you, the eggs are ripe and swollen, your uterus, a welcoming nest in which any day now the concoction of my mother will swirl. I think then too that I am there, a part of the photograph so small I go unnoticed. Maybe I m in the burnished sky above you, or a thread in your orange Sunday dress, or maybe I m a pearl on your necklace. It is all a camera trick, really, three in one four if you count my sister all biding our time in the gentle lap of your life. You test the waters and walk ahead of us, before you divide meiotically. You see if the world is a dream, if the joy beats out the pain every time. When you realize yes, you say, Come out of me. It s a life worth living. Poem by Sil Machado and Photo by Joe Puentes 7
8 Ethics Committee Report By Michael Pinkston, Ph.D. (Listserv Monitor & RPA Ethics Committee Member) As I hope you are all aware, the members of the Ethics Committee take turns being available to RPA members to provide consultation on ethical issues. A schedule for which of us is currently available for that consultation can be found in our recent newsletter and on the Ethics Link on our website. The members of our committee were recently informed by Bill McCausland that he felt the time was right for him to resign from our committee. The committee members would like to share our deep appreciation to Bill for the very thoughtful approach to ethical issues he has displayed for so many years in the discussions we have had together and in the consultations he has been providing to individual members. Our committee has asked Jules Dantin to take the spot vacated by Bill and we are very pleased that she has agreed to do so. For those of you who are relatively new to RPA and those who have been around so long you might have forgotten, I want to be sure that you are aware that both Jules and Bill have previously served in a variety of other leadership roles in our organization including in the role of President. RPA Ethics Committee Offers Consultation Our Ethics Committee welcomes questions about ethical issues in your practice. Ann Strack, Ph.D., is available during the month October to consult with you about any ethical concerns you may have. Jeff Kahn, Ph.D., is your consultant for the months of November and December.
