Those two words on a 3 X 5 index card would launch me towards many opportunities at public speaking often with very little notice. As those words stared up at me, I was attending the Air Force Noncommissioned Officer Preparatory course at Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas. In that part of the course, we had to draw a subject and speak impromptu for 3-5 minutes. Before my turn, the whole class had laughed when this huge athletically built man drew the subject Tinker Bell. At this point, I had zero public speaking experience. However, sitting around with my friends, I was a great story teller who could think quickly on his feet. For the next minutes, I struggled my way through discussing the uses of peanut butter, the relation of a former president to peanuts and I may have even touched on how it sticks to the roof of your mouth as my tongue had threatened to do when I first drew the card. In the years since, I have had many opportunities to speak in public on military topics and most importantly on my faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. I ve preached to small country church congregations of half a dozen and in large churches running two Sunday morning services. I ve had the opportunity to speak to civic groups on challenges our military face while deployed and separated from family. I have spent many hours behind radio station microphones. This article may seem like bragging. But, I share these things to let you know that God will make a way for your gifts. And, just like the index card with peanut butter written it, He may start your path towards practicing your gift in a most unlikely manner. Most people in today s world have a job because that s where they could find employment. But, not many people are truly plugged into the things they are passionate about in life. We often work part time at that which we enjoy the most while working full time in an occupation with which we are not pleased. Occasionally you will see this question for discussion on Facebook, What would you be doing if money were no objects? I usually answer with writing. I would love to be a full time researcher and writer. What would you do if money were no object? Your answer likely reveals your strongest gifting from the Lord. Is there a course of action you could take to move closer to fulfilling those dreams and passions? Although I had engaged in public speaking for a number of years, I never really wrote much although I had dreams of writing a book someday. However, the opportunity to write came from Dave Ashcraft. He worked for the NAS News and called me asking me if I was interested in writing a monthly faith based column for the paper that is published for the Fort Worth Naval Air Station community in North Texas. David once worked for me in Air Force Recruiting Service and now in retirement was working for the publication. I jumped at the opportunity which fueled the flames within me to continue writing. I was busy in life and could easily have declined. But, here I am a dozen years later still writing on a routine basis. And, so I ask again is there something you could do to move at least an inch towards your passion? Pray fervently that God give you opportunities to do that which you love. I believe He will answer that prayer. It may come in the form of an index card with a couple of words written on it or it may be something less obvious. But, I sure glad I was handed that index card with the words peanut butter. Tony T-Bar Barnes is a 28 year veteran of the Marine Corps and Air Force. She returned to the United States to command Tobyhanna Army Depot, Pa. Lieutenant General McQuistion was then assigned to the headquarters of the U.S. Army Materiel Command at Fort Belvoir, Va., as executive officer to the deputy commanding general, followed by a third Pentagon assignment as director for strategy and integration within the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army (G-4). VA Celebrates Women Veterans The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will conduct a series of one-day event to raise awareness and celebrate the stories of women Veterans. The events to be held in five locations across the country will provide an overview of services and benefits available to women Veterans. Experts will be available to women veterans to answer questions and exhibitors will share information on their many resources. We have found that our women veterans often put the needs of others first, said Elisa Basnight, Director of VA s Center for Woman Veterans. We encourage them to make themselves a priority to learn about the benefits and services which they ve earned through their dedicated service. We are bringing our experts to them, where they are. VA staff, as well as local community supporters and agencies that assist women veterans, will be available for face to -face interaction. All VA facilities are encouraged to participate in activities to celebrate and honor the women who answered the nation s call. The scheduled events and local activities are part of a new national VA campaign, Women Veterans: Celebrating Our Stories of Service, which launched in late March The vision for the national VA Campaign was born out of the realization when the women Veterans from all eras and generations surrender the uniform, they retain the intangible--that combination of resolute resilience and the unbeatable skills they will incorporate into their reintegration and readjustment process Through this campaign, CWV will be engaged in going to these women Veterans to raise the awareness of VA s commitment to them, and to facilitate the conversation around what more needs to be done in serving the unique needs of women Veterans. The sessions for women Veterans will be held between June and September of at the following locations: St. Petersburg, St. Paul, MN--Sept. 14, 2015, June 12, 2015 ; San Diego (Oceanside), Calif. July 10, 2015: Houston, TX. August 7, 2015; Minneapolis/St.Paul MN Sept 14, 2015 and Washington DC Sept. 22, 2015 Women Veterans represent one of the fastest growing segments of the veterans population--about 9.2% of the total veterans population. Today there are an estimated 2 million women Veterans nationwide VA continues to improve benefits and services for women Veterans and is diligently transforming its culture to embrace this growing population, through other collaborative initiatives with Federal/state/local governmental and non governmental stakeholders. 5 Tuesday Mornings Rock at Colonial Country Club by June Spadachene The Colonial Country Club Tuesday morning meetings began in the late 1960 s with a group of friends sitting around the having coffee and telling stories at the Petroleum club in Ft. Worth. They decided to make it a monthly affair open to the public. Don Woodard became the Pacificator, with help from wife Wanda. Don said the 1st pacificator was Henry Clay. He says the best thing that ever happened to him was marrying Wanda. These meeting have been going on for the last twenty five years or so. They end for summer break until Sept. 1st. This June meeting presented wonderful music and interesting dialog. Don says, we rely on interesting dicourse to engage the different issues. A wide variety of opinions even unpopular ones, are freely stated. Laughter is mixed with serious stuff, completely unstructered chaos The eclectic program of music and ideas can draw a crowd, even on a Tuesday morning. and unrehearsed. It s Tuesday morning live. Music often fills the air where at a recent meeting, a concert pianist from Byelo Russia played a truly beautiful concert piece. Gutarist, Tracy Smith offered a ballard of the redheaded stranger who rode into Blue Rock, Montana and met the beautiful yellow haried lady. The French harp played by Judge Pete Perez from Mexico. Club gatekeeper, Mike Pixler introduced the National chairwoman of the CCC,Joan Sharp, National chairwoman of the CCC an organization which was started during the great depression to hire young men to work on public conservation programs in the environment, such as trail building and improvment of their communities. They now hire young people 14 to 16 years old with a mission to equip them with skills and values to be vigorous citizens who improve communities and environment. They are hired to protect and enhance natural resources. Open discussion from the floor began with words from Ret. Brig. General Bill Lawson. He expressed his opinion over the public disdain for the police. The public wants them to do other things than their jobs of enforcing the law, people should obey the police he said. Rachel Long, granddaughter of avowed athiest, Nat Fralia and a staff member of Congressman Mark Veasey, said Blacks are often from broken homes without Fathers for guidance, citing that as a cause for misbehavior. There followed some discourse among the members. Just another meeting of the Tuesday morning Club. The CCC program was created during the great depression as a public works project intended to promote environmental conservation of public lands and natural conservation. The program became a model for the creation of team-based national service youth conservation programs.which helped young men contribute to the family income of depression struck families. The young men were recruited for 1 year of service for work on state parks and forests.in 1939 Congress ended the independent status of the CCC and transferred control to Federal Security agency. The program now is known as the Student Conservation Corps. Most states now continue of some form of work projects to disaster relief to trail building to national, state and city parks. Present programs are national, state and local programs that engage primarily youth and young adults in community service, training and educational activities. The National chairwoman of the CCC is Joan Sharp visited the June meeting at the Colonial Club as part of her tour voicing support of the current CCC. Classical pianist Dmitri Ulasuk dropped in from Byelo, Russia to treat the gathering. Tracy Smith brought his guitar licks to the Tuesday morning crowd. 6

6 A Word with Don Woodard by June Spadachene There was a group of us sitting around at the Petroleum Club in the late 1960 s having coffee and telling stories--we decided to make it public and give everyone attending space to join the opinions--etc. He said he became the original Pacificator with a lot of help from his wife, Wanda. Don said one of the first pacificators was Henry Clay. Don was a Yeoman to a Navy ship captain during WWII, which is a powerful position to be in, So in May 1945 their ship was with others close to Okinawa. Don said, he had a buddy who was on ship the other side of one between them. Don took the liberty of his position and began to get to his friend s ship. While he was on the water, a Kamakazi pilot came over the area crashing into the third ship and missing the other two. Don was on the water between and was not hurt. This is the reason he believes his angel was protecting him. He also cites being in a house that fell to the ground, and working around oil wells for years and was never injured. He says still the best thing that ever happened to him was marrying Wanda. He was injured and at home Wanda came with a group from his church, he was very interested and she was tying to hide a ring that was on her finger, not successfully. His guardian angel must have been there also, they ve has a long and successful marriage. Praise for Jim Wright who was his close friend was something Don wanted to talk about. He said I m so angry about tobacco products which caused this wonderful man to lose part of his tongue and later die from the cancer. He was a good and faithful friend and I curse damnable tobacco. Don Woodard, left, as Al McCluny delivers his report of military events. Don and Jim Wright attended the inauguration in 1961 when Kennedy and Johnson were sworn in, and attended the funeral of the assassinated president three days later in Washington 7

9 10 VA North Texas Health Care System announces another first with the successful patient implant of vbloc, a technology-based, scientifically advanced weight loss therapy. vbloc is a pacemaker-like implant called the Maestro Rechargeable System that intermittently blocks intraabdominal vagus nerve signals or transmission of messages involving food intake and processing between the brain and stomach. The Maestro System is wireless and customizable to meet the needs of a patient s changing lifestyle. The implant is minimally invasive and performed as an out-patient procedure that does not alter or restrict the patient s anatomy. The procedure was performed on Thursday, May 28, 2015 by Dr. Sachin Kukreja, Director, Bariatric Surgery, VA North Texas and the patient is recovering well. In January of this year, the Maestro System was approved for use in adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 to 45 kg/m2 or a BMI of 35 to 39.9 kg/m2 with a related health condition such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels, and who have tried to lose weight in a supervised weight management program within the past five years. There are currently many options for patients trying to lose weight. Some involve behavior modification, others involve pharmaceuticals, or even surgery. For patients pursuing surgery, the vbloc therapy allows patients to have successful surgical weight loss, without the need for anatomy alterations or the food restrictions that accompany the other operations. This opens a new door in the surgical weight loss arena, said Dr. Kukreja. Earlier this year, the FDA approved this first-of-its-kind treatment that offers a neuroscience-based approach to the treatment of obesity, differentiating it from traditional weight loss surgical options. The Veterans Health Administration and VA North Texas are committed to improving the health and well-being of Veterans through health care innovation, said Dr. Jeffrey Hastings, Interim Chief of Staff at VA North Texas. By incorporating treatment options into our practice like vbloc Therapy, which is on the leading edge of science and technology, we are fulfilling that promise. Information about the Maestro Rechargeable System and vbloc Therapy You should not have an implanted Maestro Rechargeable System if you have cirrhosis of the liver, high blood pressure in the veins of the liver, enlarged veins in your esophagus or a significant hiatal hernia; if you need magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); if you have a permanently implanted, electrical medical device; or if you need a diathermy procedure using heat. The most common related adverse events that were experienced during clinical study of the Maestro System included pain, heartburn, nausea, difficulty swallowing, belching, wound redness or irritation, and constipation. Talk with your doctor about the full risks and benefits of vbloc Therapy and the Maestro Rechargeable System. For additional prescribing information or to learn more about vbloc Therapy, please visit or call MY- VBLOC.
