1 Nuggets of Faith NUMBER XXXX, ISSUE V I Almost Blew It Bill Hollingsworth Publisher Naval Air Station (NAS) News, Serving Retirees and Senior Life Magazine are proud to say that we can still write and report on anything we want in the United States of America! We ve been powerfully, tirelessly reporting for 35 years now! Thank God for that precious, awesome, wonderful freedom and freedom of expression! That complete freedom of the press is what keeps a free country - free! Our Founding Fathers knew this! The reason it is the First Amendment to the Constitution! When the press is thwarted or deterred, inch-byinch, one s true freedom is stolen! When the press is free to report the facts and not dictated as to what they may write - then that assures us all of democracy s continuing liberty and freedom. We proudly say that we will not be toldwhat to say and/or be dictated to about how we report anything and/or how it must be slanted! We humbly and without arrogance or self-importance make this promise to our readers. Were it left to me to decide whether to have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. -Thomas Jefferson NAS News is not a military contract publication. California, Cass Advertising MEMBER 2015 by Tony Barnes I almost blew it. It was nearly quitting time in my Air Force Recruiting Service office. Most people had gone home for the day and a lady had called me wanting to talk about Air Force opportunities for her son. Unfortunately, her English was very limited and my Spanish was even more limited. We were not progressing in our communication efforts. After a couple of minutes of listening to very little I understood, I saw Dave Ashcraft walk by my office. I covered the phone and jokingly said, Hey Dave, know anyone that speaks Spanish? I chuckled but, ended my mirthful utterance when he replied, I do! as he quickly took the phone from my hands. I was mesmerized as for the next 15 minutes he sat at my desk and spoke with the concerned mother. How could I have made that mistake? Not only did Dave once work for me, but he is also a precious friend of mine who has brown hair and green eyes with no visible characteristics of someone who could speak Spanish. However, I soon found out that Dave had grown up in Mexico as the son of a missionary. I learned (yet again) that we should not judge a book by its cover. A few weeks ago, I met my friend Charles Johnson for lunch. He pastors Heart of Worship church in Colorado Springs. As we sat down to lunch, he handed me a southern gospel CD and said, I know you aren t a southern gospel fan but, I brought you this CD. I hope you enjoy it. I was shocked by his statement as I am a huge fan of southern gospel music. I own numerous DVDs of the Gaither concerts and have been to some of the big coliseum events. I have pictures of me with Janet Paschal, Ivan Parker and Jeff and Sheri Easter. Having been stationed in Alabama and Mississippi, I developed a great appreciation for that genre of music. How did Charles make such a mistake or did he make a mistake? From the pastor s frame of reference he had known me for four of my seven years working for KTLF in Colorado Springs. That station is a praise station with very little southern gospel music. In our years of knowing each other, I don t think we had a single conversation centering on quartets, 5 th Sunday singings or when the roll is called up yonder. He had made an assumption on the collection of data he knew about me. That s certainly not a foul we all do it every single day. An important aspect of life is our eventual realization that we don t know everything about a person and we should always keep an attitude of openness and a desire to know more. Just as I assumed Dave didn t know the first thing about Spanish and Charles didn t know I have a deep appreciation for the music of the Deep South, in each case more was learned. In these scenarios, myself and the pastor thought we knew the other person well. The best leaders and the best bosses I have ever known have always been people that took time to get to know people. When I was in the Air Force, if a boss spent most of their time in the office I knew they weren t going to be good for our squadron. They might be good administrators, but they weren t effective leaders. Taking the time to get to know someone is how relationships are developed and strengthened. To be effective witnesses for Jesus Christ, we need to let people know we care enough to get to know them. I ve blown it many times but, I sure hope I am getting better at getting to know people in my life. Tony T-Bar Barnes is a 28 year veteran of the Marine Corps and Air Force. 3 North Texas Healthcare System Accountability Meeting by Bill Fischer On Monday, July 13, 2015 media and hospital officials of the VA Hospital in Dallas met as part of their efforts in creating a culture of accountability. Members of the press as well as hospital staff were on hand to report on the overall health of the 2nd largest VA hospital in the nation. The VA Hospital in Dallas, under the leadership of Mr. Jeff Milligan, has led the nation not only in accountability to patients and the public, but also inspections and audits are among the best in patient care and fiscal responsibility. The Dallas VA Hospital serves more than 116,000 Veterans and delivers `.4 million outpatient episodes of care each year to Veterans in 38 Texas counties and two in Oklahoma. The hospital also employs approximately 5,000 people and 1,400 community volunteers who assist daily, not only in Dallas, but in Bonham, Fort Worth, Tyler and the five community based outpatient clinics. The hospital currently has 844 patient beds, with a top notch Spinal Cord Injury Center, Domiciliary Care Program, and a Community Living Center with a dedicated hospice unit. On VA Hospital grounds is a home for those who need a place to stay while their Veteran is hospitalized. The Fisher House provides a no cost temporary lodging in in a home like setting for families of Veterans or active duty military personnel receiving VA Care. A Polytrauma Suite provides specialized treatments and therapies to service men and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The Dallas VA is devoted to top notch and innovative health care for its patients. The hospital was the first in the nation with an approved TAVR program (transcatheter aortic valve replacement. ) Other medical services include a Dialysis Unit, Telemetry, Interventional Cardiology and Intensive Care Units, Mental Health Care that includes a Domiciliary and Electroconvulsive Therapy; Cardiothoracic, Bariatrics and Robotics are also available. The VA also recognizes the need for rural Veterans to receive care, and offers telehealth programs in Mental Health, Dermatology, Polytrauma/ Traumatic Brain Injury, Physical Therapy, Spinal Cord Injury and Teleretinal. There are also alternative therapies offered in; mindfulness, Tai chi, Qigong, Pet Therapy, Massage Therapy, Music Therapy and Acupuncture. The Dallas VA is dedicated to education of its clinicians, and provides education and experience to 1,875 residents, students and trainees. As a major research center, the VA North Texas Healthcare System has more than 90 principal investigators and 400 research staff who work daily to create advances in the understanding and treatments of diseases and disabilities that affect not only the Veterans, but the general population. In 2008, the VA North Texas was recognized by the National Center for Patient Safety with the bronze Cornerstone Award, and was awarded the gold in 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2013 for outstanding achievement in identifying, analyzing and resolving patient safety issues. The VA was also awarded the Robert W. Carey Excellence Award from the Secretary of Veteran Affairs in Now for the fifth consecutive year, the VA s Consolidated Mail Outpatient Pharmacy received the highest customer satisfaction score among the nation s public and private mail order pharmacies, according to a J.D. Power study. An independent American Customer Care Index rated the hospital higher than most private hospitals. The VA also trains 120,000 healthcare professionals each year, more than any other system in the country. It is estimated that 70% of all U.S. doctors have trained with the VA. The Veterans Administration guarantees 2 million home loans with the lowest foreclosure rate and the highest satisfaction ratings in mortgage lending. Locally, the VA System has a 900 million dollar annual budget, providing 500,000 Veteran Care each year, with 28,000 Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans. The North Texas Healthcare System currently serves 20,000 female veterans with 5,001 employees of which 31% are Veterans. As of July, there were 94,559 active appointments, with 96.28% scheduled less than 30 days out. 3.72% were over 30 days, but the majority of them were due to Veterans cancelling and rescheduling their appointments, since the statistics start from the original appointment date. A multi-disciplinary Access Committee was formed to make sure patients received care, improved access to care by outside venues, and in hiring new staff. The hours of care for some locations and departments has expanded to include evenings and Saturdays. The hospital has 410 nurses on staff for hands on clinical care, and has hired an additional 107 with a need and recruiting effort for an additional 303 nurses. The NTHS does 150 outreach events yearly, serving Fort Hood and Fort Bliss in integrating soldiers back into civilian life. 4
4 The hospital is in a constant state of construction with a 70 million dollar budget. Currently because of outsourcing needed healthcare to its veterans, the VA infuses 3 billion dollars into the community. 41% of its Veterans are considered disabled. The DFW National Cemetery has served 49,000 veterans and spouses to date. There are currently 4,000 burials each year on a massive 638 acres of land with 152 acres currently used. The cemetery has 32 full time employees with 50 volunteers. To be buried at DFW National, the requirements are that you must serve 2 years prior to the draft, or have served one day after the draft. Dependents must be 21 years old or younger. The cemetery also has the space for 7,090 cremation remains, with an Ossuary currently being constructed. An Ossuary is merely a memorial that will be placed in the center of the columbarium s section, where the ashes of the deceased will be mixed with the ashes of others. It is new and currently untested in its popularity. Editor Note: A popular misconception for many, is that when needed, all you have to do is call the cemetery and they will take care of everything NOT TRUE! The DFW National Cemetery provides a final resting place with a marker, stone or columbarium, with honors for the Veteran with a ceremony in one of three gathering areas. The veteran must make their own arrangements with a funeral home for the purchase of a casket or pre-arrangements for cremation and container. You will need to provide them with the veterans DD 214 to be able to go to the DFW National Cemetery. 5
5 Welcome Home Veterans Celebration at NASJRB By June Spadachene NASJRB Commander Gil Miller joined the city of White Settlement to welcome veterans home. The park filled with many people of different nationalities, some in the dress of their country. The day was Texas hot but everyone took shade when possible and enjoyed the celebration. Some Americans and Vietnamese gave tokens of their country and some returning American military came in camoflauge garb. Captain Miller welcomed all who came and praised the open harmony and opportunity to celebrate and remember. Captain Gil Miller began his career in San Diego, Calif after command and after college. He was stationed in San Diego, Calif.flying a Seasprite for counter narcotics operations. Eastern Pacific. Later he flew a cargo transport in Afghanistan. Stationed in New Orleans, LA, he flew the UC128 Huron as an instructor-evaluator, and was also a C130 instructor -evaluator there. Capt Miller was an executive officer on the Navy staff at Andrews AFB, and has the Navy Commendaion medal and four meterious service from his 4700 hours and many awards. Capt. Miller ts guest this day was South Vietnam pilot, Col. Nguyen, born in North Vietnam he moved later to South Vietnam where attended a military academy in He became a pilot for the South Vietnamese Army Air Corp. His last assignment there was to help rescue American pilots shot down in the North Vietnamese pilots. After the war Col, Nguyen was hired by Boeing Aircraft company and moved to Seattle Washington to work there with Boeing aircraft on the 787 aircraft, Boeing called again and Nguyen and his family moved to Ft. Worth. He says he s so grateful to the United States for supporting the South Vietnam against the North. He said he felt very proud to be invited to the Welcome Home celebration at NASJRB. 6
6 Someone Who Cares By June Spadachene The Flower Mound Joint Veteran Coalition newly formed to help homeless Veterans in the Denton County area was started recently by a group chaired by Retired Col. Chris Martin as part of the Denton County Veterans Group. Col Martin is ably assisted by volunteer Dawn Olsen. The first meeting of this group was well attended and filled with many volunteers. Retired Col. Martin is a West Point Graduate with advanced officer training. He retired in 2012 with advanced officer training. He is now a career counselor in the Flower Mound-Denton area. He says this County like many others, needs more outreach by people who want to help Veterans. There are many issues but no. 1 is homelessness and 2 unemployment. Twenty Two Veterans commit suicide every day. Thirty Percent suffer from PTSD. One half of Viet Nam Vets suffer with PTSD. Only one half of one percent is served, In the Denton area alone 10,000 vets have issues of stress (called a hidden wound). The Flower Mound coalition plans to be highly visable and active with these Vet concerns. Plans are to tell them where to get the help they need and make sure it s available. They want to work with a hand up not a hand out. Denton is the 4th largest county in Texas. There are 10,000 Vets in Denton County. Rebuilding homes is a priority for Veterans. Only ½ of 1 percent of the Veteran population is served. This group hopes to make a significant large difference in the needs. They would like to have more dogs to donate. And expenses are always in need of money. Social programs and transitional housing are needed. Tech training is needed homes and dollars are always needed. Retired Col. Chris Martin speaks at the inaugural meeting of the Flower Mound Joint Veteran Coalitioin 7
