2 Welcome Lincoln campus Location of New Zealand Our mission is to help feed the world, protect its future, and help people live well. You are now part of that mission. Whether you are starting your tertiary study with us or looking to build on it, our programmes will prepare you for today s demands from the modern world and to look at opportunities for the future. New Zealand Lincoln University has a long-established reputation as a specialist in land-based research and education. By focusing on New Zealand s largest and most significant sectors with applications as diverse as agribusiness, farm management, and landscape, or sports, recreation and tourism we provide our students and staff with the ability to apply their knowledge around this country and across the planet. Each educational course has a practical focus. This allows you to build practical skills, while working with your fellow students in real-world environments. We underpin this with an understanding of theory that builds professional skills. SOUTH ISLAND NORTH ISLAND Auckland Christchurch Wellington Lincoln University Campus I hope you enjoy your time at Lincoln University. Dunedin Dr Andrew West Page Vice-Chancellor 2 Lincoln University
3 Canterbury - a student s playground As New Zealand s specialist land-based university, it s fitting that Lincoln University is located in a rural setting on the rolling Canterbury Plains. Lincoln is a thriving township 20km south of Christchurch. With a permanent population of 2,700 people, it s a social, largely student town, growing to over 7,000 during university term-time. Less than half an hour drive or bus ride away is the South Island s largest city, Christchurch. With a population of around 340,000, Christchurch is also the second major business centre in New Zealand. It s an exciting time to be living, studying and working in Christchurch. The city is in the process of transforming itself into one of the world s most modern and sustainable cities. Traditionally known as the garden city it is also the national centre of information and communications technology (ICT) finding the right balance between lifestyle and development. Christchurch is ideal for students, with a rapidly evolving culture and energy of its own. The city has a vibrant arts scene, celebrating art, music, theatre, dance and cinema. The annual World Buskers Festival is a colourful 10-day kaleidoscope of top street performers a much-anticipated international event that is popular with all ages. Ko Tane the Living Ma-ori Village, and Nga- Hau e Wha- National Marae both offer unique Ma-ori cultural experiences. When it comes to choosing where and what to eat, the city s rich cultural make-up means you are spoiled for choice. This includes popular restaurants, fine dining, casual neighbourhood eateries, and those places just perfect for dinner with a group of friends. There are so many new cafés and restaurants popping up all over the place that it s hard to keep up. From sharing tasty Mexican dishes to fusion-style cocktail bars, there s something for everyone. Victoria Street and Lincoln Road are two areas that have attracted a range of new bars and are becoming the leading social and entertainment hubs in the city. If it s retail therapy you re after, Christchurch offers a real mix of shopping options, from high end to the quirky and unique. For a unique shopping experience, head to The Tannery a new shopping arcade located in Woolston filled with boutique fashion stores, independent retailers, and eateries. Complementing the growing number of pop-up shops all over Christchurch is Re:START, a funky, outdoor retail space consisting of buildings made from shipping containers in the city centre. From the city centre, it s less than two hours drive to the nearest ski field. The city also offers a huge range of exciting recreational options in nearby areas of incredible natural beauty. The opportunities are endless you can bungy jump, hike, mountain bike, raft, surf, swim, golf, shop, see whales, dolphins and seals, visit wineries and gardens, be entertained, and so much more, all within a couple of hours of Christchurch. Page 3
4 Between mountains and sea, Canterbury offers diverse wildlife and nature attractions. Banks Peninsula is made up of a number of bays and outlets. If you take a marine life cruise from Akaroa, you will likely encounter dolphins bow riding at the front of the boat, native marine life, as well as a number of seabirds, seals, and blue penguins. To really get close to nature, a number of the tours offer swimming with dolphins an unforgettable experience. Arthur s Pass National Park is the main alpine crossing between the east and west coasts, with impressive alpine scenery, unique native plants and wildlife. Walking the network of mountain tracks, you might be lucky to meet the cheeky kea the world s only alpine parrot. Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is a world-renowned climbing and hiking destination. Glaciers cover almost half of the park and there are 23 peaks over 3,000m, including the majestic Aoraki Mount Cook. The village at the bottom of the mountain makes an ideal base for climbing and hiking activities. The city also offers a huge range of exciting recreational options in nearby areas of incredible natural beauty. Further north midway along the coast is Kaikoura. An eco-tourism jewel in New Zealand s crown, the name Kaikoura means meal of crayfish (kai food/ meal, ko-ura crayfish), so it s no surprise that it s one of the best places for Kiwi seafood. If you are venturing further abroad, Christchurch has a conveniently located international airport, with easy connections to major cities all over the world. North of Christchurch is Hanmer Springs an easy inland escape from the city, offering both adrenaline and relaxation. Adventure activities include its thermal sulphur and hot rock pools, mountain biking and hiking trails, trout and salmon fishing, jet boating, bungy jumping and quad biking. Students love the lifestyle that Christchurch and Canterbury has to offer while they develop their careers and have plenty of fun in the process. Lincoln graduates leave university with highly respected qualifications, but also an extensive network of friends, business contacts, connections with future employers and the experience of a lifetime. The Master of Business in Global Management and Marketing will provide a robust grounding in management and marketing concepts, theories and approaches, and equip graduates with the skills and knowledge required to create and add value along the value chain both in New Zealand and internationally. Master of International Rural Development How do communities grow economic productivity while reducing negative environmental, social and cultural impacts? These challenges call for creative development professionals who can integrate and apply critical thinking from a range of perspectives, and who are innovative in seeking meaningful solutions. Lincoln s Master of International Rural Development explores the complexities of development issues. The master s programme brings together critical theories and practical experience from across land-based disciplines. The extensive cross-disciplinary program allows you to specialise in such topics as agribusiness, economics, finance and tourism. Major: Agribusiness Majoring in Agribusiness you will be able to identify constraints that exclude smallholders from markets, and create strategies to improve their access to value chains. They will have an advanced knowledge of rural banking including how to balance the bank accounts for an agricultural entity, handling pricing, and watching trends in the industry that can lead to financial gains or losses. Moreover, they will understand commodity markets (energy, grains, livestock) including factors influencing commodity markets, mechanics of delivery, settlement in commodity trading and risk management strategies. Major: Tourism Tourism plays a vital role in the development process.
