2 About Melmark New England Melmark New England was developed in 1998 by a small group of human service professionals to serve students with complex and challenging needs. A service mission was established to meet educational, rehabilitative, and vocational needs of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), acquired brain injury, neurological diseases, dual diagnosis, and severe challenging behaviors. The three founding senior staff have over 60 years of experience in Massachusetts providing high quality special education and clinical treatment services to children, adolescents, adults, and their families. In the time since its inception, Melmark New England has developed a reputation for treatment excellence and has achieved some remarkable results on behalf of the children served. Melmark New England was founded as a new service division of Melmark, Inc., a Pennsylvania based provider of residential, educational, therapeutic, and recreational services for children and adults with developmental disabilities. The original program was established in 1966 by Paul and Mildred Krentel, whose youngest daughter Melissa was born with Down syndrome. Melmark has expanded its services over the years to additional special needs populations and into residential services on its campus and within communities throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania. Information on Melmark New England can be obtained through our website at Additional information on Melmark, Inc. can be obtained through their website at Page 2

4 Behavior Analysis Certification Board Supervisor Training Helena L. Maguire, M.S., BCBA October 3, 2015: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. 8 Credits - BCBA Type II CEU. Attendance cost is $ This training meets the standards set forth by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and prepares Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) to become approved supervisors. Topics covered during the training will include the purpose of supervision, important features of supervision, behavioral skills training, delivering performance feedback, evaluating the effects of supervision, and ongoing professional development. The live portion of the training will be delivered via lecture, role plays, and small group breakout sessions during which time participants will discuss practical and ethical case scenarios. Following the live training, participants will be required to complete and pass an on-line exam. All continuing education credits will be provided following the completion of the live training and on-line exam. This training is based on the BACB Supervisor Training Curriculum Outline, but is offered independent of the BACB. Helena Maguire, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, received her Master of Science in Human Services Administration from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Helena has worked extensively in the field of community based human service delivery systems in Massachusetts. Her areas of experience include staff training, family training, transitioning children and adults to inclusive settings, and the treatment of severe behavioral disorders. Helena has served as Program Director at Vinfen Corporation and as Director of Adult Services at the May Institute. Currently, she is the Senior Director of School Services at Melmark New England and an adjunct faculty member at Endicott College. Registration/Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. Lunch will be provided. Page 4
5 Response Blocking for Stereotypy: A Comprehensive Review of Procedural Variations. William H. Ahearn, Ph.D., BCBA-D November 12, 2015: 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. 3 Credits - BCBA Type II CEU. Attendance cost is $50.00 Stereotypic behavior is a persistent and challenging problem behavior in individuals with disabilities and persons with autism. Response blocking/response interruption and redirection (RIRD) is a frequently used procedure shown to be generally effective in the research literature. However, positive results are more likely to be published and response interruption procedures do not always lead to desired changed in stereotypy. A brief discussion of the history of response blocking will be provided and then an overview of variants of RIRD, especially those recently reported in the research literature will follow. A number of impediments to effective interventions will be discussed, as well as, the importance of variables other than stereotypy (e.g., appropriate alternative responding, time in intervention, aggression, and compliance). A brief overview of other effective treatment strategies for stereotypy, as well as, interventions that foster appropriate behavior will conclude the workshop. It will be suggested that response blocking/rird is a treatment that should not be the only procedure used when treating stereotypy and that a comprehensive approach that includes building appropriate alternative responding is most likely best practice. This presentation will allow many opportunities for audience input. Dr. Ahearn joined The New England Center for Children in August 1996 and currently serves at the Director of Research. He is also Adjunct Faculty in Western New England University s masters and doctoral programs. Bill was named the 2009 American Psychological Association - Division 25 awardee for Enduring Contributions to Applied Behavioral Research. He is the Past President of the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts and formerly the Chair of Professional Practice for the Berkshire Association for Behavior Analysis and Therapy. Bill s research interests include social skills in children with autism, verbal behavior, assessment and treatment of stereotypy, severe problem behavior, and pediatric feeding difficulties. His work has been published in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, Behavioral Interventions, Behavior Modification, The Lancet, as well as, the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders. Dr. Ahearn has written book chapters on teaching children with autism. He is currently on the Editorial Boards for the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, The Analysis of Verbal Behavior, and Behavioral Interventions and is Associate Editor of Behavior Analysis in Practice. 6 Behavior Analytic Evaluations of Psychological Disorders. James Chok, Ph.D., BCBA-D January 14, 2016: 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. 3 Credits - BCBA Type II CEU. Attendance cost is $50.00 This presentation will describe common psychological disorders as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5th Edition (DSM-V; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) and examine how these disorders have been viewed from a behavior analytic perspective. While some disorders have been evaluated frequently, such as phobias (e.g., Jennett & Hagopian, 2005), other disorders have received little to no attention, such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (e.g.,chok & Koesler, 2014) and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (Saigh, 1986). The presentation will review the current literature as it relates to the assessment and treatment of psychological disorders by behavior analysts and describe emerging behavior analytic methods for understanding and treating individuals with mental health disorders. Dr. James Chok is a licensed psychologist, neuropsychologist, and Board Certified Behavior Analyst. He received his doctoral degree from the University of North Carolina and completed a one year internship and two year postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychology at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School. He currently serves as the Behavioral Neuropsychologist and Director of Clinical Services for the Residential Treatment Facility at Melmark Pennsylvania. He has authored several papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals and presented research findings at numerous professional conferences. In 2011, Dr. Chok was the recipient of the Outstanding Practitioner Award given by the Berkshire Association for Applied Behavior Analysis and Therapy. He is currently investigating the assessment and treatment of obsessive-compulsive behavior in individuals with autism spectrum disorders, teaches courses in behavior analysis at UMASS Boston and Endicott College, and is the Vice President of the New Hampshire chapter of the International OCD Foundation. 7 Brain Injury, Behavioral Neurology, and Behavior Analysis. Harvey E. Jacobs, Ph.D., CLCP February 11, 2016: 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. 3 Credits - BCBA Type II CEU. Attendance cost is $50.00 Acquired brain injury is a leading cause of death and disability in the country and the science of human behavior offers powerful technologies that can help address many leading issues. While some of this work has been accomplished over the past 20 years, there is much more to be accomplished. Being an effective behavior analyst in this field requires a clear understanding of behavioral principles, brain and behavior relationships, as well as, working in complex medical, community, cultural and social environments. Perhaps one of the biggest challenges is to overcome historical concerns regarding mentalism. There have been tremendous strides in the neurological sciences over the last decades that have opened up the black box, eschewed a number of explanatory fictions and expanded opportunities for empirical investigation. As with any discipline, including our own, it is still necessary to sort the wheat from the chaff. This presentation will provide an overview of brain injury, basic aspects of neurophysiology, key contributions that behavior analysis offers, and guidelines for behavior analysts who are interested in this field. Harvey E. Jacobs, Ph.D., CLCP earned a Ph.D. in Psychology from Florida State University, a post-doctoral fellowship in Behavioral Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and was a Mary Switzer Research Fellow of the National Institute of Handicapped Research. Dr. Jacobs has served on multiple medical school faculties, worked on-staff, in administrative roles and as a consultant to numerous programs and facilities. He has been principal investigator on multiple federal, state, and private grants. Current interests include life care planning; rehabilitation for neurological, psychiatric, medical and intellectual impairments; applied behavior analysis; and complex treatment issues across the life span. Dr. Jacobs has published and lectured widely. He is the author of Understanding Everybody s Behavior After Brain Injury: Don t Don t! and Behavior Analysis Guidelines and Brain Injury Rehabilitation: People, Principles, and Programs. He currently serves on the Board of Editors of the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, previously on the editorial board of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, and reviews for other professional journals. Dr. Jacobs serves on the Board of Directors of the North American Brain Injury Society and on the Board of Trustees of the United States Brain Injury Alliance. He is also one of 50 professionals recently selected by the Brain Injury Association of America helping to draft national guidelines for the rehabilitation and chronic disease management of adults with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury. 8 Skinner s Analysis of Motivation: Ten Applications for Improving Autism Treatment. Mark L. Sundberg, Ph.D., BCBA-D March 10, 2016: 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. 3 Credits - BCBA Type II CEU. Attendance cost is $50.00 Motivation plays a critical role in virtually every aspect of human behavior. Its importance in the analysis of behavior is a major theme throughout Skinner s writings (e,g., 1938, 1953, 1974), especially in the book Verbal Behavior (1957). In these writings, Skinner details the many distinctions between motivation and stimulus control and suggests they constitute two separate types of antecedent control, a point elaborated on extensively by Michael (e.g., 1982, 1993, 2007). This presentation will demonstrate the value of including the concept of motivating operations (Michael, 2007) into autism assessment and intervention programs. Ten specific applications of the MO will be described, each of which could improve a child s overall program, but in combination these applications could produce even greater gains in linguistic, social, academic, and functional living skills. Mark L. Sundberg, Ph.D., BCBA-D received his doctorate degree in Applied Behavior Analysis from Western Michigan University (1980), under the direction of Dr. Jack Michael. He is the author of the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP), and co-author of the original ABLLS and the book Teaching Language to Children with Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities. He has published over 50 professional papers and 4 book chapters. He is the founder and past editor of the journal The Analysis of Verbal Behavior, a twice past-president of The Northern California Association for Behavior Analysis, a past-chair of the Publication Board of ABAI, and has served on the Board of Directors of the B. F. Skinner Foundation. Dr. Sundberg has given hundreds of conference presentations and workshops nationally and internationally, and taught 80 college and university courses on behavior analysis, verbal behavior, sign language, and child development. He is a licensed psychologist with over 40 years of clinical experience who consults for public and private schools that serve children with autism. His awards include the 2001 Distinguished Psychology Department Alumnus Award from Western Michigan University, and the 2013 Jack Michael Outstanding Contributions in Verbal Behavior Award from ABAI s Verbal Behavior Special Interest Group. 9 The Ethics of Supervision. Jon S. Bailey, Ph.D., BCBA-D April 7, 2016: 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. 3 Credits - BCBA Type II CEU. Attendance cost is $50.00 Behavior analysis is attempting to develop and improve its professional practices while rapidly expanding and facing significant challenges from consumers, government agencies, insurance companies, and related human services professions. The demand for well trained, certified or licensed behavior analysts is pushing our training programs to the limit producing more and more students and those graduates will need quality supervision in their practicum settings and on their first jobs. We have believed for over a decade that any BCBA was qualified to supervise but new guidelines coming from the Board counter that assumption. Our Professional and Ethical Compliance Code describes ethical expectations for supervisors but they are not widely adhered to. In this presentation, I will describe the brief history of the concept of supervision in ABA, describe its origins and offer an updated operational definition for our field. I will then review the relevant ethics items and describe in some detail the Best Practices that are being promoted by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Dr. Bailey received his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas in 1970 and is Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Florida State University where he was on the graduate faculty for 38 years and produced a record 63 Ph.D. s. He is currently Director of the FSU Panama City Masters Program in Psychology with a specialty in Applied Behavior Analysis and teaches Ethics & Professional Issues, Skinner s Theory of Behaviorism, and Research Methods in ABA. He is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst; is a Fellow of the Association for Behavior Analysis: International and the American Psychological Association and is Secretary/Treasurer, Program Chair, and Media Coordinator for the Florida Association for Behavior Analysis, which he founded in Dr. Bailey has published over 100 peer-reviewed research articles, is past-editor of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and is co-author of seven books: Research Methods in Applied Behavior Analysis, How Dogs Learn, Ethics for Behavior Analysts, How to Think Like a Behavior Analyst, 25 Essential Skills and Strategies for Professional Behavior Analysts, Ethics for Behavior Analysts, 2nd Expanded Edition and Ethics for Behavior Analysts, 3rd Edition, all co-authored with Dr. Mary Burch. One additional book is Performance Management: Changing Behavior that Drives Organizational Effectiveness, with Dr. Aubrey Daniels, published in Recommended Readings: Bailey, J.S., Burch, M. (2016). 10 Potty Talk: Conversations and Variations on Toilet Training Helena L. Maguire, M.S., BCBA May 12, 2016: 3:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. 3 Credits - BCBA Type II CEU. Attendance cost is $50.00 Toilet training procedures have been developed that are effective with children who are severely delayed intellectually, behaviorally, and communicatively. This presentation will review a variety of toilet training procedures as well as provide modification given the many needs children have. We will describe a sample model program for assessing toilet readiness and toileting completion. Helena Maguire, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, received her Master of Science in Human Services Administration from the University of Massachusetts Boston.
