PIAZZA KEYNOTE SPEAKER Title: What You Don t Know May Hurt Someone Abstract: Treatments for pediatric feeding disorders based on applied behavior analysis have the most empirical support in the literature, even though the results of several studies have shown that the etiology of pediatric feeding disorders is often complex and multifactorial. Factors that contribute to the etiology of a feeding disorder include medical problems, oral motor dysfunction, and nutritional and/or caloric deficits. Therefore, it is critical that the behavior analyst seek input from physicians, speech and/or occupational therapists, and dietitians prior to initiating treatment of a child with a feeding disorder. The first purpose of this presentation is to familiarize the audience with the potential risks associated with treatment of a pediatric feeding disorder. A second purpose is to teach the audience ways to mitigate these risks. A third purpose is to teach the audience why interaction with professionals from other disciplines is important for safe and effective treatment of a child with a feeding disorder. Biography: Dr. Piazza received her doctorate degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. She completed her predoctoral internship and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Kennedy Institute and the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. After her training, Dr. Piazza continued as a faculty member at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where she served as the Director of the Severe Behavior Unit, the Chief Psychologist of the Neurobehavioral Unit, and the Director of the Pediatric Behavioral Sleep Clinic. In 1996, Dr. Piazza became the Director of Training for the Department of Behavioral Psychology. In 1997, she became the Director of the Pediatric Feeding Disorders Program. In 1999, the Kennedy Krieger and Marcus Institutes became affiliates, and Dr. Piazza moved to Atlanta to initiate the Pediatric Feeding Disorders Program at the Marcus Institute. She also served as the Director of Training for the Marcus Institute. Dr. Piazza is a former Editor, former Book Editor, former Associate Editor, and former board member of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. In 2002, the Chron s and Colitis Association named Dr. Piazza a Woman of Distinction. She also was identified as the most productive female researcher and one of the top five researchers in the world in the areas of behavior analysis and behavior therapy in the 1990 s. Dr. Piazza currently is the Director of the Pediatric Feeding Disorders Program and a Professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center s Munroe-Meyer Institute and Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Piazza has published more than 75 peer-reviewed studies on the assessment and treatment of severe behavior and feeding disorders.

3 ALICIA ALVERO Title: Using ABA to Help Achieve Optimal Performance Management Abstract: The two most common reasons organizations often do not run at optimal levels of performance are because it can t or won t. Problems related to can t do issues are attributed to a lack of antecedents, which trigger performance, or improper systems structures, which enable performance, within the organization. The most common antecedent problem is lack of effective or efficient training. Systems issues deal with the structure in which a job gets done, or should get done. Oftentimes, jobs are simply not structured in the most efficient way possible. Problems related to won t do issues are related to lack of effective consequences which are necessary to improve and maintain optimal performance. Both issues are crucial to optimizing performance across all levels of the organization. This presentation will discuss the most efficient ways to diagnose an organizational problem and effective ways to solve these issues using valuable behavioral techniques. Biography: Alicia M. Alvero is an Associate Professor at Queens College, The City University of New York and the Deputy Chair of the Psychology Department. She received her B.A. in Psychology from Florida International University, and both her M.A. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Ph.D. in Applied Behavior Analysis from Western Michigan University (WMU). Dr. Alvero was awarded the prestigious Ford Foundation Fellowship while at WMU for her research in behavioral safety and the effects of safety observations. Her research in the areas of performance feedback, behavioral safety, time sampling procedures, and training have been published in peerreviewed journals such as Professional Safety, the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management, Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, Journal of Safety Research, Analysis of Verbal Behavior, and Journal of Agricultural Safety and Health. She is the author of several book chapters, and is an editorial board member for the Journal of Safety Research and the Journal of Organizational Behavior Management. She has been an invited speaker at numerous conferences across the country. Dr. Alvero s research in the areas of performance feedback and behavioral safety has been funded through NIOSH and PSC-CUNY grants. She also serves as an organizational consultant in the areas of training and development and behavioral safety.

4 Darlene Crone-Todd Title: Delayed Discounting: Research & Application Abstract: Delayed discounting procedures are used as one behavioral measure of impulsivity and self-control, during which participants are asked to choose between smaller, immediate rewards versus larger, more delayed rewards. Some typical methods of studying behavior using this procedure have included varying the length of the delay and the amount of the delayed reward, while measuring what is called the indifference point (the resulting hypothetical decision about the reward). In addition, this procedure has been used to study differences in people who cannot seem to delay reinforcement (e.g., developmental disabilities, drug addiction, poorly-performing students, etc.), and under various conditions such as time constraints. During this talk, the measures will be explained in terms that are for a general audience so that the literature is more understandable for those new to the area. The goals include making the procedure and measures understandable to a broad behavior analytic audience, and to stimulate interest in future research and applications. Biography: Darlene Crone-Todd, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in Psychology at Salem State University. She recently returned from Brazil after the sabbatical project entitled, The assessment and development of higher-order thinking skills using a computer-aided and video program to teach preference assessment for teachers of children with autism". Dr. Crone-Todd has presented in over 50 symposiums at conferences world-wide and has published research in peer-reviewed journals including, The Behavior Analyst Today, The Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, and Substance Use and Misuse. Dr. Crone-Todd earned her doctorate in psychology from the University of Manitoba. Her current research interests include human choice behavior, computer-mediated learning environments, higher-order thinking, basic and applied research in behavioral pharmacology, and shaping behavior.

5 MELISSA NOSIK Title: An Update on the Behavior Analyst Certification Board Abstract Recent developments at the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) will be presented. The most current data on the BACB s credentialing programs -- Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst, Registered Behavior Technician -- will be provided along with a summary of the BACB s international activities. In addition, a number of recent and impending developments at the BACB will be described, including: revisions of the BACB s ethics code and disciplinary system, eligibility standards, and BCaBA supervision requirements. Biography: Melissa R. Nosik, PhD, BCBA-D is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. Her professional interests include training methods for clinicians, dissemination, behavior analyst credentialing, and public policy. Dr. Nosik has over 10 years of experience in practice and has trained behavior analysts both in the United States and internationally. Dr. Nosik has served as a board member for the Tennessee and Nevada Associations for Behavior Analysis. Dr. Nosik received her doctorate in 2013 from the University of Nevada, Reno under the mentorship of Dr. Larry Williams and her master s degree from Florida Institute of Technology (2004) under the mentorship of Dr. Jose Martinez-Diaz.

6 JORGE REYES Title: Behavioral Approaches to the Assessment and Treatment of Sexual Offenders with Intellectual Disabilities Abstract: Behavioral approaches to the assessment and treatment of sexual offenders with intellectual disabilities have been conspicuously absent from the literature for a number of years. This population is typically thought to be outside of the realm of behavior analysis, but more recent research has shown that behavioral approaches can offer significant contributions to both assessment practices as well as approaches to treatment and long-term management strategies. This presentation will focus on highlighting a series of studies, which have attempted to develop a modern behavioral approach to address both the respondent and operant features of sexual offending. Despite the advances in this area, there are still a wide variety of issues that need to be addressed. The current presentation will also focus on specific future directions in the areas of assessment and treatment, and how they can ultimately inform sexual offender management. Biography: Jorge Reyes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Westfield State University, and serves as the director of the Master s program in Applied Behavior Analysis. His primary area of research has focused on behavioral approaches to the assessment and treatment of sexual offenders with intellectual disabilities. He was the recipient of the American Psychological Association Division 25 Dissertation Award for Applied Behavior Analysis in He is currently serving on the editorial board for the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis and has served on the editorial board or as a guest editor for Behavior Analysis in Practice, The Behavior Analyst, and the Analysis of Verbal Behavior.
