3 FORT WALTON BEACH HIGH SCHOOL Curriculum Guide As a student enrolled in Ft Walton Beach High School, you are given the opptunity to select coursewk each spring f the following year. It is imptant to involve your parents in course selection, that you make certain you meet the prerequisites, and that you keep high school graduation requirements and career objectives in mind. This guide is designed to aid you in making appropriate choices by providing brief program and course descriptions, prerequisites, and other infmation related to this process. In der to complete registration successfully, you are urged to follow the steps identified below: 1. READ the curriculum guide carefully. 2. REVIEW the list of graduation requirements and determine which requirements have been met and which courses need to be taken next year. Consider courses which need to be repeated because of lost credit. 3. TALK to your parents and teachers about course selections and appropriate academic levels (standard, hons, advanced studies) as determined by your classroom teacher. Standard: These courses are designed f in-depth instruction that challenges students. These classes are suitable f all students. Hons / Pre-AICE: These courses are designed f self-motivated students who wish to pursue a me challenging curriculum while in high school. Advanced Studies (AICE / AP / Dual Enrollment): These college-level courses are designed f highly motivated students who wish to pursue potential college credit in high school. 4. SELECT courses that will crespond to complement your goals f the future. Course selection represents a commitment on the part of the student and parent to complete the schedule of classes chosen; however, requests f schedule changes will be considered f the following reasons: Scheduling err (example request Algebra 1 and receive Algebra 2) Increct course sequence Failure to complete a prerequisite course requirement Graduation college requirement omitted from schedule Duplicate course Credit already received f course / course completion during the summer Blank period on schedule As you make your course selections, get teacher signatures f ALL of your choices. Be sure that you meet the prerequisites f all selected courses. If a registration fm is not returned with all of the necessary requirements completed, a counsel will make course selections f you based on class availability. A student will not be allowed to make a schedule change if a registration fm was not received during the registration period. Special Note: Additionally, the administration reserves the right to make necessary changes based on class size and teacher load as determined by the state of Flida class size requirements. Students must earn a minimum number of credits each year in der to be promoted to the next level: 9 th Grade: Promotion placement from 8 th Grade 10 th Grade: A minimum of 6 Credits are needed to be promoted to 10 th Grade 11 th Grade: A minimum of 12 Credits are needed to be promoted to 11 th Grade 12 th Grade: A minimum of 17 Credits are needed to be promoted to 12 th Grade Please note a freshman earning less than four (4) credits will be zoned to CHOICE High School. Once you approve your choices, there will be no schedule changes. Due to class size amendment these policies will be strictly enfced. Once the official school year starts, changes to course selections are made only f duplicate missing courses. All students who drop a class after the first 4 weeks of each semester will receive a penalty F. Students who earn a grade of D F may retake the course and replace the D F when earning a grade of C higher in the same comparable course. Credit will be awarded only once f a course which is repeated. The iginal grade will remain on the transcript but is not counted toward the cumulative GPA. Students having accepted high school credit while in middle school may retake a course to fgive grades earned less than a B. Students receiving a Level 1 on FSA ELA / FCAT Reading, regardless of promotion retention status, will be placed in an Intensive Reading class the following year. A transcript is the official recd of a student s high school recd and is available from the Guidance office. Two transcripts are provided free of charge. A fee of $1.00 is charged f each additional transcript. Please allow three to five wking days f a transcript to be processed. 12 FORT WALTON BEACH HIGH SCHOOL Curriculum Guide Flida HB7067 (Section 4, Section ) states that students entering 9th grade in the School Year and thereafter be required to complete one on-line course during the high school years f graduation. An online course taken f high school credit in grade 6, grade 7, grade 8 fulfills this requirement. This requirement is met through an online course offered by the Flida Virtual School, a virtual education provider approved by the State Board of Education, a high school, an online dual enrollment course. Please note the following courses taken at Ft Walton Beach High School MEET the graduation online course requirement: Personal Fitness Blended Class Digital Design 1 Digital Media Fundamentals Foundations of Web Design Intro to Infmation Technology Television Production 1-4 (no longer offered) Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) is a program in which students can take an advanced academic curriculum and assessment program written and administered by the University of Cambridge in England. All public universities and community colleges in Flida award up to 30 hours of college credits f AICE exams passed. All students enrolled in an AICE class will take the AICE exam at the end of the school year! AP courses provide college level instruction in several areas that help prepare students f the rigous coursewk encountered in college. In May of each year, students take the AP exam written, administered and graded by the College Board. The sce on this exam will not affect a student s grade in the course. Some colleges place students award college credit based on these test sces. AP Courses have a weighted GPA value. The mission of dual enrollment is to shten the time necessary f a student to complete the requirements of a high school diploma and a postsecondary degree, to broaden the scope of curricular options available to students, and to increase the depth of study available f a particular subject. Enrollment is limited to no me than 18 hours per semester. Students who plan to attend college outside of Flida should check with the university they plan to attend about transfers of college credits. The regular school year shall consist of two semesters. The length of each semester shall be determined by the public district school board governing board of the private school. A summer school session, if held, shall be considered to be an extension of the second (spring) semester. Each Semester Thereafter: 1. An athlete must maintain a cumulative 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, its equivalent, in all courses he/she takes to be eligible each semester. 2. Exceptional students who are pursuing a special high school diploma shall be required to maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in all those courses necessary f the completion of the requirements f the special diploma as prescribed by the district school board. All students are evaluated and may check their Bright Futures status at Senis who apply f the Bright Future Scholarship will officially be evaluated twice during the seni year, in early spring and following graduation. AICE TRAVEL & TOURISM Grade Level: 10, 11, 12 Course Weight: SOCIAL STUDIES ELECTIVE Credit / Year Long As the fastest growing sect of service jobs in Flida, the hospitality and tourism field faces significant challenges in finding talented, infmed new wkers. In this course, students will learn the tricks of the trade in hospitality management, as well as the economic impact on international destinations as a result of changing travel conditions and trends. In particular, participants will study the dynamic challenges facing the biggest companies in the airline, lodging, and destination travel industries. This course is beneficial to students who are interested in pursuing careers in management, business, hospitality event planning. At the end of the year, students will take Cambridge s AS level assessments, Paper 1 and Paper 2, which consist of multiple-choice, sht and extended-response questions.

43 FORT WALTON BEACH HIGH SCHOOL Curriculum Guide 0.5 credits in Personal Fitness* AND 0.5 credits in a Physical Education (PE) activity elective are necessary to meet state graduation PE requirements**. FWBHS offers a number of 0.5 credits PE activity electives that can be used to meet graduation requirements. In addition to these courses, there are some activities that will meet the required 0.5 PE skills ption. Those activities are mentioned in the statements below: 1. Completion of one semester of Marching Band with a passing grade of C replaces the 0.5 credit of the PE activity elective. The student must still take the Personal Fitness class (0.5 credit) to complete the 1.0 credit in PE. 2. Participation in a Dance class satisfies the 0.5 credit of the PE activity elective. The student must still take the Personal Fitness class (0.5 credit) to complete the 1.0 credit in PE. 3. As well as fostering enjoyment in physical activity, it will encourage students to develop an understanding of the interaction between they and practice by focusing on the perfmer and perfmance. After completion of this course, students will take the Cambridge AICE PE exam in November of the following year in which the course is taken. Students will be tested on applied anatomy and physiology, acquiring, developing and perfming movement skills, and contempary studies in physical education and spt. Additionally, students will produce a written action plan regarding a minimum of two activities. This course satisfies both the Personal Fitness and PE activity elective requirements f graduation. Students will design and create costumes, hair, and makeup f all theatre department productions, with particular attention to technical knowledge of safety procedures and demonstrated safe operation of theatre equipment, tools, and raw materials. The mission of the AFJROTC instruct team is to provide a framewk to fulfill this purpose, by developing leadership skills, self-discipline, teamwk, and citizenship. Aerospace Science (AS) courses introduce the histical and technical aspects of the aerospace environment along with wld cultures and studies. Leadership Education (LE) provides experiences to develop discipline, responsibility, communication skills, and good citizenship. LE also includes wearing the Air Fce unifm weekly, Air Fce customs and courtesies, and participation in drill and ceremonies. We want to immerse students in the study of 18 commonly-valued traits to get them to read about, write about and think about these traits on a daily basis.
