This is determined by several factors and assumptions: Guaranteed distances assume a maximum combined connector and splice loss of 1.5 db, and cable attenuation of 3.5 db/km (for 62.5 micron) or 3.0 db/km (for 50 micron). All transmission distances include patch cord lengths. Additional connector and/or splice loss can be offset by shorter distances; likewise, reduced loss allows for greater distances. ST twist-lock style connectors maintain optical contact under load and help prevent accidental disconnects.
