5 Objectives of the programme Statistics in HTA. Students will learn how to use Markov models to achieve and interpret the cost-effectiveness analyses. The programme, spanning two years, is exclusively designed for you to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills required for jobs based in the health economics field. Future health market trends demand specialists proficient in planning and overcoming challenges with cost-effective solutions There is a growing need for trained health economists in the Middle East and, in the last few years, regional health care systems underwent major changes leading to extensive health economic evaluations. With a perceptible increase of big data within health care systems, there is an escalating demand for health care professionals to competently manage, explore, understand, and analyse data. Health economics analyses facilitate guidance for quality purposes in decision-making. The Health Authority Abu Dhabi (HAAD) strategic plan for 0-05 emphasises the need to implement a sound health economic evaluation programme, to better explore economic efficiencies of health policies and to systematically negotiate prices and reimbursement of new drugs. Regional health care industries have a considerable interest in health economics training to improve the quality of their evaluations to match requirements of public entities. Most pharmaceutical companies have developed market access departments dedicated to the Middle East and our objective is to train students on the ideal use of applied quantitative methods for the analysis of health care data. Two specific needs have been identified; first, a need for training in cost-effective analyses to evaluate the economic efficiency of drugs or policies. Second, there is an imperative for training in econometrics, to explore care consumptions and care pathways in health data. Econometric techniques explore economicsrelated questions in clinical data (cohorts) and in national insurance data. These are the most relevant data sources in health economics and highly pertinent to the UAE, as the government has created a national database for health care consumption and reimbursement, alongside the development of clinical programmes. You will follow training in cost-effective analysis and in econometrics to best examine the quality of health economic analyses and to run your own economic models. The first year provides the fundamentals in data management, econometrics, and has introductory courses on several health economics issues. The lectures, Health Economics, Economics Report introduce medico-economic analyses and Economics of Social Insurance highlights the role of insurance in health systems. Several courses will be held in computer labs using the statistical software Stata.. In the Theory and Modeling in Finance course, students learn how to complete a prediction model using data focusing on financial issues in the health care market. Students learn how to analyse cross-sectional data, using ordinary least squares, probit and logit models in the Quantitative Methods of Management courses. You will also learn financial and management skills vital in understanding health care expenditures trends and vital for managerial positions ( Financial Analysis, Management and Strategy, Project Management, and Fiscal Management ). The second year involves specialisation and features 5 modules. Module deals with understanding current health economic issues prevalent in the private and public sectors. The courses review the economic problems faced by pharmaceutical companies and governmental agencies. The Health industries course will be led by a local professional who will give an insight into the economic problems the private sector faces. Module is dedicated to health technology assessment (HTA) with three courses to examine the economic efficiency of new health technologies: Data analysis in HTA, Decisions in HTA, and Module highlights econometrics with three courses on the use of big data in this market. The Panel data econometrics and Time series econometrics modules involve students using the statistical software Stata.. In Collective decisions and societal choices, students learn how to collect and analyse big data to explore the economic consequences of certain diseases (for e.g. diabetes), and to evaluate health policies designed to prevent and manage these diseases. Module 4 deals with understanding health care behaviours from a theoretical perspective. The three courses on understanding individual and interactive decisions are Game theory, Law and economics, and Decisions under health risks. Here, students discover the theoretical models used to explore health behaviours and nudges. Finally, Module 5 will enable you to expand your research abilities with the Research and Seminar course. You will prepare and defend a dissertation, and present a research article of your choice during a seminar. 9 Practical Information ADMITTANCE CRITERIA This Master s is open to students holding a bachelor degree (BA) preferably in Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, and Management or a general degree in Clinical Sciences and Epidemiology. To apply for this Master s Programme, we will require the following from you: A recognised bachelor degree earned in a discipline appropriate for the prospective graduate degree. Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi doesn t normally accept average grades that are below.0/4.0 or its equivalence for M degree level. It is the norm to have the minimum average of.0 /4.0 or its equivalence for admission into M degree level A certificate or a copy of your undergraduate University diploma For M degree level, a minimum of years of working experience is normally needed. There should be minimum of years gap between the earned bachelor degree and admission into the M degree level Further documents for graduate applicants include: A letter from your employer statement stating duration of employment and your job profile A detailed Curriculum Vitae and cover letter (not exceeding two pages) A personal statement (not exceeding one page) For all students, proficiency in English (both oral and written) is a pre-requisite. You will need to produce a certificate or proof of an English aptitude test, TOEFL (score of 550, CBT, ibt) or IELTS (score 6.0), valid for at least two years. Exceptions: Graduate applicants who have previously completed requirements for a Bachelor s degree at an accredited university in an English-speaking country. Proficiency in French is plus but this is not mandatory. At the discretion of Paris-Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, any early admission decisions will be made for those students who are exceptionally well qualified. You will be also evaluated on your individual assignments, internships, presentations, reports and examinations which usually take place towards the end of every semester. For all classes, attendance is mandatory and it is important that all students are always punctual and observe university regulations at all times. Master s Thesis For non-employed students, you will be required to submit a thesis based on your internship. If you are employed full-time and attending this Master s programme, you will have to submit a thesis based on research. The jury of the thesis will be the same as that in Paris.
