Slow control system Analog status and history system: an update G. Horton-Smith (KSU) 2006/03/13
Slow control system Analog status and history system Why the name change? 1) It doesn't really control anything. 2) People who hadn't encountered the term before couldn't figure out what it meant. 3) Some people were having entirely too much fun making fun of the word slow.
Analog status and history system (or Monitoring and History System?) Purpose: to monitor and record quantities related to the condition of Double Chooz. Hardware: 1-Wire TM devices for temperatures and voltages in 0-5V range; transducers supplied by subsystems as needed. Software: PostgreSQL database for storage, any PostgreSQL-enabled software for clients.
Hardware
1Wire device count: the (updated) original list FE/WFD monitoring: 120 cards plus 30 spares requires 300 ADC chips and 150 thermometers LS/oil temperatures: 6 per detector (12 total) Temp/humidity: 3 per lab (6 total) AC line monitor: 2 per lab (4 ADC chips total) General purpose ADC capacity: 20 discrete 4- channel boxes per lab (40 ADCs total) Total number of 1Wire devices: 512
New wish list: more devices Magnetic field monitoring: a good candidate is the Honeywell HMC2003 sensor package (3 axes, 1 V/gauss, 40 μgauss resolution, $199 USD). Buffer oil pressure monitoring: possibly in same unit as temperature monitor Barometers: monitor atmospheric pressure Deployable instrument package: for checking liquid scintillator conditions Monitor HV splitters?
Request of budget reviewers: expanded scope (???) Include mechanical packaging of oil and tank packages in my scope. Include instrumentation amplifier with programmable gain, bipolar range, and differential input capability in discrete ADC boxes. (?) Include more expansion capacity.

Limit on 1-Wire network bus Total weight : up to 300 m, where 1 m of CAT5 wiring == 1 m weight 24 pf of capacitance == 1 m weight 1 device == 0.5 m weight In principle, all 512 anticipated devices could fit on one bus. In practice, we will have several independent or switchable branches, < ~30 devices each.
Software C C++ Fortran...
PostgreSQL is suitable Assumption: channels sampled once per minute full data kept for 1 month older data decimated to hourly averages Software test: 5 years of data for 100 channels Storage requirement: 367 MiB (==>3.6 GiB/1000 ch) Single channel history data access time: 65 ms, independent of number of channels Single channel update: < 1 ms
Interface for other systems Any PostgreSQL-enabled software will be able to read or write values from the current value database and read the history data. PostgreSQL APIs exist for C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, ROOT, any language with C extensions (including Ada), and many more... Python, Perl, and ROOT interfaces are so easy You can learn one in a short afternoon. It's actually easier to use the database than a file.
Virtual analog channels Examples: Other systems' readouts: HV readout, radon level Settings: HV set points, all channel alarm ranges Other system data: trigger rate, run number,... Advantages: One display client for all. One record-keeper for all. Easy to correlate data from different systems.

Summary 1-Wire analog data will be read out and saved. Other hardware data can (and should) be saved in the same system, either by providing a DC voltage or by software connection. Any slow moving software data can (and should) be saved in the same system. History database will keep a record of these values for later use. Capacity >1000 channels. Present and past conditions can be studied easily.
Short-term schedule (basic system) Small-scale hardware prototype (~20 ch.): this summer (a possible REU project) Software: debug this summer with prototype Buy hardware: fall '06 or spring '07 Installation in far lab: next summer ('07)
Schedule for expanded scope items Critical item: permanent in-tank magnetic field/pressure/temperature packages need to be ready by time of tank installation. (5/2007) Other new items' schedules depend on demand: Z-axis-deployable sensor package barometric pressure support for other DC voltages or currents?
