3 08 TWNIC Summer Newsletter 戊 子 年 夏 Focus IP Addresses for Everyone and Ubiquitous Coverage Due to the gradual depletion of IPv4 addresses, IPv6 has been developed. In order to promote IPv6 applications, elevate IPv6 technology development and cultivate future uses for IPv6, TWNIC has developed plans to achieve its goal of providing IP addresses for everyone and network connection for everything ; for example, they have developed plans to assist local ISPs in providing commercial IPv6 services and establishing exchange centers, to use IPv6 to build its on-line aquarium that allows users to observe penguins and coral right at home, and to adapt IPv6 to use in its provision of on-line meteorological observation services. Lately, TWNIC also conducts multiple training courses allowing more people in Taiwan to become familar with IPv6. TWNIC s Contributions to IPv6 Promotion in Taiwan To promote IPv6 s further use, TWNIC has been searching for cooperators to use IPv6 in every aspect of daily life, such as housing, transportation, education and entertainment. Recently, the most high profile project has been installing the first IPv6-enabled intelligent residences, which was applied by Farglory Realty Corporation and Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. The press conference of the intelligent residences was launched in March and the report is as follows. The First IPv6-enabled Intelligent Residences in Taiwan At the press conference on March 14th, Farglory Realty Corp. announced that it plans to build the first IPv6-enabled intelligent residences in Taiwan. This represents an unprecedented technology breakthrough for Taiwan,as Japan is the only other nation with significant IPv6 market penetration. This project will help alleviate the problem incorporate IPv6, the latest second-generation network technology, into residential buildings in order to help with solving the future problems of insufficient IP addresses. At the press conference, Farglory Realty delivered its official introduction of IPv6 along with its intelligent residence projects. This would allow for a combination of IPv4 and IPv6 in its 11 projects, including Future U-Home, Ive League Residence, and Farglory Yilang Residence. The Future U-Home project will be the first to be completed in 2008 and will accommodate more than 4,800 households while providing them with over one million fixed network addresses. These projects will help push Taiwan to the global forefront in usage of IPv6 (the second-generation network) technologies; second only to Japan. The press conference was presided over by Teng-Hsiung Chao, Chairman of Farglory Group, and attended by several distinguished figures, such as Tien-Lai Teng, General Director of Department of Posts and Telecommunications, Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Yen-Sung Lee, Executive Vice President of Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd., and Feipei Lai, TWNIC Chairman. According to Chairman Lai, thanked for its initiative to join the global trend of IPv6 development in both infrastructure and technology, Taiwan has ensured itself a future of Internet For Everything, extending network connections beyond the telecommunication industries to residences, automobiles, national defense, security and other industries. It is hoped that, through the efforts of some far-sighted business, such as Farglory, the promotion of IPv6 in Taiwan will pick up speed, and allow Internet development in Taiwan to elevate from Internet For Everyone to Internet for Everything in the near future. 1

4 Summer Newsletter 戊 IPv6 Happy Go : Charity Activity of TWNIC To familiarize people in Taiwan with IPv6 and its uses in daily life, TWNIC held an exhibition called IPv6 Applications in Future Life in the special exhibition area on the 3rd floor of the west wing of the National Taiwan Science Education Center in Taipei City in On April 12th, TWNIC held its own IPv6 Happy Go program, by inviting children from the aboriginal Atayal tribe living in Jiashih Township, a remote region in Taiwan, to have a free visit to the exhibition and to learn more about this new technology as well as the unlimited possibilities it would bring in future life. 子 年 夏 These children were students from fourth to sixth grades in Gingping Elementary School, Jiashih Township, Hsinchu County. From this exhibition, they learned about the convenience IPv6 can bring to every aspect of life, including food, medicine, residence, transportation, learning, and entertainment. Throughout the IPv6 Happy Go activity, the young participants were extremely excited and delighted. This activity helped inspire children to develop more interests in the importance of IPv6 to future life. For all parties concerned, this activity was a huge success in terms of both charity purpose and educational meaning. IPv6 Ready Logo As on April 22nd 2008, Taiwan has manufactured 50 products rewarded IPv6 Ready Logo Phase I certifications, the third highest ranking in the world, and 24 products received IPv6 Ready Logo Phase II certifications, also third highest ranking in the world. 5 08 TWNIC Summer Newsletter 戊 子 年 夏 TWNIC s Participation in IPv6-related Activities IPv6 Theory and Applications Training Courses To promote the increased application of IPv6, enhance technological development and cultivate use, TWNIC held four training courses, IPv6 Theory and Applications for civil servants in the Data Management Process Center of the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS), Executive Yuan, in March and April. The four courses were all received enthusiastically and allowed their participants to learn more about IPv6 and its related applications. TWNIC also held three more training courses about IPv6 Theory and Applications at National Taitung University in Taitung on May 16th, National Penghu University in Penghu on May 28th, and National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung on June 13th. These three courses were open to the general public in the hope of promoting knowledge about IPv6 and its use among citizens in Taiwan. All the training courses are conducted in the form of lectures, combined with hands-on practice. This provides participants the latest IPv6 know-how and skills, in order to enhance the overall capabilities of the IPv6 environment now being established in Taiwan. The attendance at these courses is limited and applications for each courses will not be accepted until noon, two weeks prior to the courses. Titled Five Steps for Start-ups Establishment, Trademark, Domain Name, Website Building, and Marketing, this gathering offered guidance for start-up owners on how to create visitor-attracting domain names for their websites and how to build unique brand images quickly and easily by using TWNIC Page Parking e-service. From this gathering, they learned useful tips on web-based marketing, the first step toward a successful and profitable e-business. On May 22nd, TWNIC and Seednet jointly held a Mydn gathering entitled Websites Decide the Style of Your Business, teaching different types of website owners how to choose the right method to build their own websites. Individual owners can register personalized domain names and use the Page Parking e-service, while SMEs or SOHO can choose enterprise domain names together with virtual mainframes as well as use Site Builder software to enable more advanced website design and setup. TWNIC will hold similar presentations at other colleges in Taiwan. APRICOT 2008 in Taipei The 2008 Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies (APRICOT 2008) was held from February 20th to 29th in the Howard Plaza Hotel Taipei. It consisted of workshop sessions from February 20th to the 24th, tutorial sessions from the 25th and to the morning of the 26th, and the general assembly meeting from the afternoon of the 26th to the 28th. On the 26th, a press conference was also held in the Howard Plaza. It was hosted by Tien-Lai Deng, Director General of Department of Posts and Telecommunications, Ministry of Transportation and Communications; Feipei Lai, TWNIC Chairman; Dr. Gaurab Upadhaya, APRICOT 2008 Chairman; and Dr. Philip Smith, Chairman of APRICOT Management Committee, who explained to the media the goals of APRICOT There were nearly 700 network technology experts and managers from over 50 countries attending the events. According to TWNIC, the Organizer of the APRICOT 2008, the events had three key components: (1) keynote speeches and peripheral meetings introducing the latest technologies in IPv6, network security, and network communication convergence for local ISPs to identify the next wave of Internet business opportunities; (2) speeches by executives in major international organizations or experts in the industry and academia, providing inspiring and innovative thoughts for the development of Taiwan s network; and (3) a platform for local network technology professionals and managers to have direct exchange with the international experts. The keynote speakers included Dr. Chung Laung Liu, an academician of the Academia Sinica, and Wilfred Kwan, President and CTO of Asia Netcom. In addition, Fred Baker, 5

8 Summer Newsletter 戊 Chairman of the Internet Society (ISOC), was also invited to talk about issues about ISOC and IETF. Mr. Akinori Maemura from Japan was invited to give a speech on the impending problem of IPv4 address depletion. Hong-reng Luo, an engineer from Chunghwa Telecom, gave a speech on the current applications of IPv6 in Taiwan. Randy Bush and David Conrad also talked about issues about IPv6 development. These speeches and discussions presented the participants great opportunities to learn more about the latest network developments in both Taiwan and other countries. 子 年 夏 TWNIC had the honor to hold APRICOT in 2003 and again in Both were well attended by experts from the networkrelated industries at home and from abroad. To know more about APRICOT 2008, please visit International Cooperation TWNIC Assists ICANN in IDN TLD Application Evaluation ICANN has been coordinating a test of IDN top-level domain names (IDN TLD) in the Root Server and launching its ICANN IDNwiki IDN TLD test program since last October. The name example.test is entirely represented by eleven new internationalized domains on this test. Users, for example, can type in 11 languages, such as 例 子. 測 試, to experience the future environment for IDN TLD. For more information, please visit the website of ICANN IDNwiki at idn.icann.org. TWNIC has continuously participated in the IDN TLD work for years. Currently, it is also assisting ICANN by maintaining and managing the traditional Chinese version website of IDNwiki ( 繁 體 中 文.idn.icann.org) and promoting related information in Taiwan. The tenical team of TWNIC is known for their years of IDN TLD experiences and efforts. On February 2nd, JPRS sent a delegation to visit TWNIC and share experiences on IDN TLD. In the meeting, both discussed enthusiastically about IDN TLD policies, technologies, internationalized standards, and laboratory programs. TWNIC and JPRS also reached a consensus on a joint IDN TLD Application Evaluation in Taiwan, Mainland China, Japan, and South Korea in line with the ICANN IDN TLD evaluation test. As for internationalization, TWNIC and JPRS agreed to develop a simulation system jointly and conduct interoperability tests together with IETF. After the meeting on February 2nd, TWNIC and JPRS convened a meeting with other NICs during the APRICOT They presented the results of their joint test in Taiwan, Mainland China, Japan and South Korea and discussed with each other. The discussion results were compiled to produce a report draft for further review and discussion in the 71st IETF Meeting. The final evaluation report was completed and released in early April. The final IDN TLD Evaluation Report was produced jointly by TWNIC, CNNIC, JPRS, and NIDA, and published mainly through the IDN Committee of APTLD and moderators of ICANN IDNwiki of each 11 languages. 9 08 TWNIC Summer Newsletter 戊 子 年 夏 Survey TWNIC 2008 Q1 Taiwan Internet Connection Bandwidth Survey According to the results of Taiwan Internet Connection Bandwidth Survey from TWNIC, up to the end of March 2008, the total bandwidth of international connections in Taiwan has reached 202,172 Mbps (see Table 1), showing an increase of 15,729 Mbps from Q4 of 2007 with an increase rate of 8.44%. In addition, the major foreign countries, to which Taiwan has Internet connections, remain the same while the domestic and international connection bandwidth both show a stable growth. TWNIC announces its Internet-related survey findings and statistics quarterly. Its Taiwan Internet Connection Bandwidth Survey provides the most up-to-date and detailed information about Taiwan s Internet connections with the other countries and its domestic connections among local ISPs. Connected Countries and Regions both ISPs and request a confirmation. Therefore, the connection bandwidth data in the survey were all confirmed as accurate by the providing ISPs. Quarterly Growth of Taiwan s International Network Connection Bandwidth (unit: Mbps) Note: This figure was made in April Total International Connection Bandwidth Growth from Last Quarter Growth Rate By the end of March 2008, among the 19 countries, to which Taiwan has Internet connected, the US has the largest connection bandwidth with Taiwan (87,168 Mbps), followed by Japan (46,341 Mpbs), Hong Kong (41,364 Mbps), Mainland China (18,804 Mbps), Singapore (2,303 Mbps), the UK (2,100 Mpbs), South Korea (1,766 Mpbs), and other countries (see Table 1). Generally speaking, except for the US, the Netherlands, the UK, and Germany, Taiwan has Internet connections mainly with the countries in Asia-Pacific region , , , , % 149, ,601 23, % 6.49% 10.40% 2,156 9,729 16, % 8.44% 4, % 5,437 15,729 Domestic and International Connection Bandwidth The international connection bandwidth of HiNet, TWGATE and TFN respectively reaches 84,179 Mbps, 17,522 Mbps and 15,778 Mbps. They are the top three local ISPs with the largest international connection bandwidth in Taiwan. In the domestic connections among the ISPs in Taiwan, TANet, HiNet, TFN, EBIX, Seednet, TWIX, Giga, TWAREN, ASNet, and APOL, each has a bandwidth of more than 30 Gbps. The survey was conducted by sending to the contact persons from 91 ISPs, who registered in TWNIC s Connection Bandwidth Registration and Search System ( net), and requesting them to update their connection data in the system during the survey period. The survey started on April 1, 2008 and ended on April 10, ISPs uploaded their connection bandwidth data, accounting for about 64% of the surveyed ISPs. (The other ISPs just used the data of last quarter; hence, there was no change in their data.) There are 91 ISPs in this bandwidth survey. To ensure the accuracy of the connection bandwidth data, the system was equipped with a double-checking mechanism. When the data of any two ISPs did not correspond with their actual connection, or one of them failed to update its data, the system would automatically the conflicting part of connection data to the contact persons of Table 1. The courses include such as, Anti-spam; Malicoius Program Forensics and Analysis; UNIX/Linux Security; the Basis of Information Security Management System and Wireless Network Security. In addition, the participants will have a 14-day trial of free domain names. Each session is open to 30 participants and each participant is entitled to one free domain name trial. The courses are rich in content, introducing everything from the origin of the Internet, domain name attributes and categories, and skills of deciding a good domain name for a website.
