Categorization of small hydro power generation(basic data) General overview of small hydro power system (1)The definition of small hydro power system Small hydro power system in new and renewable energy is usually defined as less than 1000kW, but an universal standard definition does not exist. Generally, 1,000 to 10,000kW is small hydro, 1,000 to 100kW is mini hydro, less than 100kW is micro hydro. Output of less than 1 kw is pico hydro. (collectively small hydro power or micro hydro power is used.) Two generating methods of small hydro power small hydro power system can be broadly categorized into two systems bypass method and open canal method. It s important to know the difference between the two methods. Bypass method Generating electricity by constructing by-pass pipe only for the purpose of hydro power generation from the river, canal or reservoir and the generator installed bottom of the head drop. Open canal method Generating electricity by installing generator in existing canal and use its head drop or slope without penstock. screen intake weir screen generator by-pass pipe head drop head drop(slope) quantity of water intake is stable head drop doesn t change no harm to river and canal by using by-pass pipe need screen those requirements are needed for installation. So the installation sites are limited and the cost of civil work is expensive. generator quantity of water intake is not stable head drop, water level, and velocity are changed existing river and canal is not for the purpose of generating power. So, hydro power system must not harm its function. the shape and function of hydro power system should requires security of canal function and correspond water volume variation, head drop variation and dust. 5
Optimum range of water head type (2) General types of water turbines 1. Impulse turbines (impulse water turbines): Support for heads of m Water turbines that generate electric power by spurting out water hammers from nozzles and using this force of water to rotate turbine blades 1Pelton turbine 2Cross flow turbine 3Turgo impulse turbine 2. Reaction turbines: Support for heads of 2-100m Water turbines that generate electric power by rotating water turbine blades called runners with water pressure that applies kinetic energy (kinetic energy and pressure energy from water current) when water current is passed through one pressure crosssection water pipe (circular or short pipe) 1Francis turbine 2Propeller water turbine 3Kaplan turbine 4Tubular turbine 5Undershot water turbine (open type) 3. Gravitational turbines: Support for heads of 1-10m Rotating by means of weight of water loaded on top of impeller with water turbine blades (liners) or water receptacles 1Overshot water turbine 2Spiral water turbine Micro Hydroelectric Power Generation Guidebook (H15) NEDO Reconnaissance Report on Water Power Resources of Underused Water Head Generation NEF Optimum range of water head type Water head 2m line Water head 2m line Range of use of stream turbine Basically, the water turbines mentioned in the application tables above as using minimum water heads of at least 2m and being all-purpose for actual power generation are, with some exceptions, ordinarily used with water heads of at least 10m. The practical water head of each turbine is given as being 10m-200m, which is the ordinary range of application for existing water turbines (water head types), and facilities of at least 100kW including cost-effectiveness are usually adopted. 6
STREAM is honor student of new energy resources The operational rate of small hydro exceeds large-scale wind power and mega solar system the annual output of 300kW capacity of STREAM can generate power as well or better than 1,500kW capacity large-scale wind power or 1MW capacity solar system. Off-grid installation and stable supply STREAM is stand-alone & low cost unit. STREAM can supply stable power in 24 hours. Greenhouse, Hydroponic culture Power for electric vehicle No need civil work and low cost all-in-one unit 2~3 days for installation by using existing canal maintain canal functions for efficient generating Power for Wi-Fi station and communication antenna Electric power selling utilizing Feed-in-Tariff 7
STREAM is a combination of four technologies STREAM can provide high efficiency and adaptability based on four technologies. why STREAM can generate power at the ultra low head open canal? (general misunderstanding) Conventional hydro power generation system that utilize high head drop is totally different from hydro power generation system for open canal such as agricultural canal are totally different in technologies, functions, and system. Those are categorized in same system and theory, but actually its features and functions are not the same. Four technologies of STREAM for generating electricity in open canal 1 hydraulics -----(the shape of turbines/fluid technology) 2 utilization of water -----(adaptive technology of features, functions, and facilities of canal 3 operation -----(technology for change of streamflow and site condition and trash 4 manufacturing -----(cost reduction and easy maintenance by standardadization) 8
hydraulics 1 canal Control gate Fixed guide Dual axis cross flow Impact/reaction Maximum energy Pressurize d intake centralized Free discharge Maximum energy working point Maximum length point from center of axis Bell mouth shape Orifice hole Guide vane Water movement Flowing water Pressured Decreased speed-up Open/ discharge Impact/ reaction Wide open (canal) (control gate) (Bell mouth) (Orifice) (blade/rotation energy) (open/diffusion) 9
3. The creation of a market by STREAM 10
Uses of stream-type (low water head) low head hydro power Stream 2WAY electricity source and electric power hybrid - 2WAY: grid connection during normal activity, and independent electric source supply possible in times of emergency - Independent power supply for facilities that are remote from the grid (power cables), such as agricultural land and parks, etc. - Conserves electric power by private power generation of power purchased for facilities such as sewers, waterworks, and industrial waste, etc. - Hybrid generation with atomic energy, fossil fuel power and LNG Stream-type (low water head) low head hydro power Stream Electric power for use in disasters and emergencies - Power generator enables local production for local consumption, so power can be generated in areas where disasters have struck - In times of emergency can be used as an independent electric power source to protect the surroundings, supplying 24-hour electricity to disaster-affected areas Electric vehicles/agricultural machines (EV charging stands) - Charging is always possible with EV infrastructure in urban areas 24 hours a day, 365 days a year - Absolutely no environmental impact, thanks to use of purely natural energy - Spread of charging stands is linked to the spread of EV (electric vehicles) and agricultural EV (farming machines) Agriculture (multipurpose new agricultural revenue source) - Source of electricity for water cultivation and agricultural produce processing plants by means of private power generation of agricultural water channels, etc. - Enables creation of a cost-reducing environment without need for any concern over fuel costs - Electricity as a new source of revenue in addition to agricultural produce Support for wireless overseas - Supply of electricity to wireless regions and areas where electric power is unstable - Creation of local industry by means of local energy and local consumption Distributed small-scale regional electric power operations Size advantage 5kW~50kW (Large types requiring systems and small types receiving little use -> ideal size where both are possible) In normal times, selling electricity for business use and utilization in regional facilities (EV power sources, etc.) (Fixed price/fixed period purchases by means of Feed-in Tariff (FIT) from FY 2012) Regional activation, and management and administration of regional constituents (Unity and creation of regional agriculture, financing and business firms) 11
The creation of a market by STREAM Wide range of installation increases the potential of renewable energy of small hydro power by STREAM Water Plants Waterworks and Sewerage consume more than 1% of total city power consumption, but their potential hydro energy has not been much utilized for power generation. Power Plants Potential existence of renewable hydro energy at Cooling water discharge (Thermal / Nuclear) and Water source maintenance discharge (Hydro), etc. Factory effluent / Water waste treatment Not only purification but also possible to collect hydro energy. Waterway / River / Tidal current & level Current energy is the largest potential energy on Earth, does not run out. Ex) METI s investigation in 2007 (conventional hydropower) the potential hydropower resource in Toyama Pref. showed it s 2,700,000kW. But same investigation in 2009 which concerned very low head hydropower system showed the amount changed to 45,000,000kW.
