We are recognized throughout the world for programs like Urban Planning, Social Work, and Environmental Studies that directly engage the community, and aim our students towards the creation of a better, more sustainable world. Comprising eight schools and colleges, Portland State is the largest public university in Oregon and is one of the 100 largest public universities in the nation, enrolling more than 28,000 students. Located centrally on campus on Portland s Park Blocks, a greenspace and urban city park, the University Library welcomes more than 1 million visitors each year and provides essential resources to students, faculty, staff, and the general public. The University Library is an active and influential member of the Orbis Cascade Alliance, a consortium of 37 academic libraries in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. Position Summary The Sciences and Social Sciences Librarian consults and collaborates with scholars; participates in a dynamic instructional program, including classroom and online instruction; provides reference and information services for the University s students and faculty as well as members of the community; and selects information resources to support the instructional and research needs of a diverse institution. This position will serve as a liaison to academic units and area studies such as Anthropology, Environmental Sciences & Management, Institute for Sustainable Solutions, Geography, and Geology depending on the needs of the Library. Some evening and weekend reference duty and/or instruction is required. Portland State University faculty members contribute to faculty governance activities within the Library and the University, engage in community and professional service, and pursue an active scholarly agenda including publication, research, and seeking grants as appropriate. This full-time, 12-month, tenure-track faculty position reports to the Assistant University Librarian for Public Services.
2 Job Assignment: Support the instructional and research needs of assigned units. Collaborate with these units in assessing information needs; cultivate bridges for service and teaching; work with teaching faculty to develop discipline-appropriate instruction; provide research consultations for faculty and students; and select books, journals, databases, and other information resources. Participate in the Library s information literacy and general instruction program, face-to-face and online. Share in the development and delivery of course related instruction in the general education program, as assigned. Provide reference and information services for the University s students and faculty as well as members of the community at the reference desk and through various information and communications technologies. Includes working some evening and weekend hours. Develop physical and online learning objects and research guides. Participate in continual library planning and assessment activities, including the collection of relevant data on inputs, outputs, and outcomes. Maintain awareness of scholarly communication and copyright issues in general and within assigned disciplines and contribute to advocacy efforts. Keep colleagues informed of current issues and developments in liaison areas. Occasionally direct the work of part-time student employees or interns. Research/Scholarly Activities: Pursue an active publication and research agenda. Meet expectations for faculty scholarship in accordance with the Library and University s promotion, tenure, and post-tenure review guidelines. University Service Activities Support the mission, goals, and objectives of the Library and the University. Establish short and long-range goals, objectives, and priorities; aligned with those of the Library and the University. Contribute to the work of relevant Library and University committees and workgroups. Support Library and University development efforts. Professional Service Activities Contribute to the work of professional associations: local, regional, national, or international. Maintain current professional expertise through participation in workshops, classes, professional associations and networks, and through continued awareness of the scholarly literature. Other Responsibilities Engage in community endeavors that may benefit from one s professional expertise, and be a good ambassador for the University. Contribute to a positive and collaborative environment based on mutual respect, service, open communication, and cooperation. Maintain effective and productive communications with colleagues, administrators, and community users
3 and organizations. Other duties as assigned. Primary Activity I - Instructional Minimum Qualifications ALA-accredited MLS. Two years of full-time, post-mls experience as an academic librarian. Experience in at least three of these areas: serving as a liaison to academic departments; integrating information literacy concepts into teaching; delivering reference services; and collection development. Ability to successfully complete a background check. Ability to provide transcripts. Preferred Qualifications Three or more years of full-time post-mls experience as an academic librarian. Evidence of professional service and scholarship. Effective communications and collaboration skills. Experience using library systems, online learning applications, or digital and Web technologies in the delivery of library services. Educational background in or prior experience serving as a liaison to one or more of these areas: the Anthropology, Environmental Sciences & Management, Geography, Geology, or other disciplines in the natural or physical sciences. Flexibility and the ability to work positively in a fast-paced, changing environment while collaborating with diverse colleagues, faculty, students, and the community. Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement The annual salary rate for this position is $68,856 with an excellent benefits package including 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon Public Universities.
