1 Brown County Art Gallery Artists Association Active Artists Susan Ahbe, who was born in Chicago, attended The American Academy of Art. She moved to Brown County in 1991 and after painting watercolors for 25 years has changed to oils. Susan explores the back roads looking for subjects that quietly say, Paint Me! Christine Normant Ardelean was born Christine Normant in Chicago and initiated her art interests with classes at the Chicago Art Institute. After 30 years of dormancy, the art bug stirred again, and as Chris Normant Ardelean she resumed taking art classes and painting seriously. After another 30 years, she still enjoys painting, mostly watercolors and pastels. She has won some awards in juried shows locally and is a member of Hoosier Salon, Indiana Heritage Arts, Brown County Art Gallery, Collective Art Gallery and Central Indiana Artists. Pat Bardes has studied art at the John Herron School of Art and Indiana University. She moved to Nashville in Pat especially enjoys painting the Southwest with all its bold colors and contrasts. The past few years she has focused on pastel but still enjoys oil and an occasional watercolor. Aileen Bolton, a native of Indianapolis, now lives in Nashville, were she works in oil and watercolor, painting landscapes, stillife and animals. She has been juried and given awards in Hoosier Salon, Indiana Heritage of Arts and others. She has taught oil for 15 years and has miniature paintings in the Chambers Doll House at the Indianapolis Children s Museum. Represented by the Brown County Art Gallery, Nashville. artaileen@att.net Kwang Cha (K.C.) Brown is a multi-media artist who has combined her philosophy with her American training to create a vibrant world of color and image. K.C. received a MFA in painting at Indiana. She attended art university in China and France. Please have a look at Kwang Cha s web site: June Bryan is a life-long resident of Brown County and has enjoyed painting local scenes since the 1970s. She is a 10-year member of the Brown County Art Gallery. Her home and studio at 36 Artist Drive is open to the public by appointment. Sue T. Chapman was a high school art major and attended Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, and worked for printers, ad agencies and also freelanced. Summertime avocations:
2 scoring auto races and working backside. Her subject matter includes landscape, broad and intimate; portraits, horses and a variety of wildlife Rosemarie Christopher has been painting for over 20 years landscapes, still-life and wildlife. She works in watercolor, oil and acrylics. She is a signature member of the Watercolor Society of Indiana W. Heaton Drive, Knightstown, IN Kathleen Ryan Cox entered the professional ranks in 1992 and has paintings in corporate and private collections. A serious painter, she exhibits traditional works at the Brown County Art Gallery. She is a founding member of the Experimental Artists of Brown County, where she explores works in abstraction. KRCme2@aol.com Thelma Frame, upon retirement from public school teaching, began painting professionally and exhibited in area art shows Hoosier Salon, Indiana Heritage Arts. Landscapes and florals are main focus in drawing, watercolor or pastel. Paintings owned by Richmond Art Museum, Minnetrista Cultural Center (Muncie), businesses, schools and many individuals in the United States and Japan. Jacki Frey paints full time in watercolor, oil and acrylic. She enjoys painting local landscapes as well as buildings, people and animals. Jacki teaches painting classes at the John Waldron Art Center in Bloomington and has taught art in the public schools. She does commission works and welcomes visitors in her Bloomington studio. jackifrey@ hotmail.com, Sandee Hazelbaker started her artistic career in 1980 when she began teaching in her studio in Cincinnati, OH, where she taught weekly classes, workshops and seminars. Sandee continues to share her love of painting through her artwork, workshops and her relaxed, easy-to-follow teaching style at Cabin Ridge Studio & Gallery. Richard D. Hess, after years in Brown County, now resides in Lafayette. A watercolorist, he is past president of Indiana Heritage Arts, and his affiliations include the Watercolor Society of Indiana, Hoosier Salon, Indiana Artists Club and the Wabash Valley Watercolor Society. His realism records the mood and beauty of images passing with time from our view. Jeanne Iler, a painter and graphic artist, began her career in Illinois. She obtained her B.F.A. degree at the University of Illinois and later studied at the Chicago Art Institute. For over 30 years, she worked as a graphic designer in Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. For the past five years, teaching and painting have played a major role in her art career. Her award-winning paintings have been in many shows and galleries in the Midwest and California. Last year she was featured in Gallery North, Art Columbus and the Endwright Center.
3 Judy B. Lewis attended a four-year art school in Massachusetts, worked for Monsanto Company as a commercial artist, got married and moved around the country. She settled in Columbus, OH, where she started taking art courses and painting again. She moved to Indiana in 1994, joined the Brown County Art Gallery in She paints in watercolor and pastel. Norene Mara was born and raised in Indianapolis, IN. She now resides in Brown County, where she is a member of the Brown County Art Gallery in Nashville. Her oil paintings depict landscapes and figures. Charlene Marsh is an Indiana University graduate with degrees in Fine Arts and English. She moved to Brown County in 1987 and specializes in plein air landscapes. She has won numerous awards, including seven Indiana Arts Commission grants and Arts Midwest/NEA Master Fellowship. Collections include White House, Indianapolis Museum of Art and Indiana State Museum. Marsh was also featured in the PBS film Continuing the Legacy of Art in Brown County Beverly Sunday Mathis of Greenwood, IN, is a wife and proud mom to two grown children. A Herron School of Art degree equipped her to teach middle schoolers. Now she works to honor God as a professional artist/instructor/exhibitor. She has a special gift for teaching watercolors to adults who have never painted before bmathis888@aol.com Peggy L. McLahlan, after raising three children, decided to concentrate on her art career, studying with some of the country s finest artists as well as the Indianapolis Art Center. Turning professional several years ago, she has been the recipient of several outstanding artist awards. She has taught watercolor and drawing classes for over 15 years. Chris Newlund maintained her own business as a professional photographer until devoting all of her energies toward creating original oil paintings. She usually paints from life and regularly enjoys the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association Paint Outs. She has a passion for the natural world and an on-going commitment to growth as an artist , Newlund@aol.com Elizabeth O Rear, a native Kentuckian and Indiana resident since 1994, prefers painting diversified subjects wherever her travels take her. 4 Jacqueline Phillips retired from Michigan s major utility company as an Executive Secretary. She moved to Nashville in 1992 to pursue her love of art and build a cabin in the woods. Her interest lies in watercolors particularly landscapes and florals, specializing in winter scenes and geraniums william_p_47448@yahoo.com Barry Powell, after graduation from high school, attended the John Herron Arts Institute on an art scholarship. After college, he worked for 25 years as a graphic designer and sign painter for a southern Indiana manufacturer until 1995, when he decided to go it alone as an independent artist. Barry works in several mediums and his style would be considered realistic. He also teaches and his art classes and workshops continue to be very popular. Robert Pataconi-Rehner graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago with three degrees. He is co-founder and art gallery director of Bloomfield s Shawnee Theatre, now in its 47 th season. His life s dedication is to the unusual luminous oil color, vast space and mystery in surrealism, realistic landscapes and still lifes Cynthia Richards is a floral artist who renders her paintings in a loose, impressionistic style. She exhibits regularly in the Hoosier Art Salon and has gained many awards during her 40-year career. fwr11328@bluemarble.net Mike Schrader paints in oils, but aside from that he is very hard to classify. His work ranges from landscapes and still life to abstract expressionism with a wide variety of subject matter and style. Mike mainly paints in his studio but occasionally can be found along the back roads of southern Indiana. Pat Foley Siddiq, who lives in Brown County, received her art training from DePauw University, where she received a B.A., and Indiana University, M.A. She continues to study art with nationally recognized painters. Pat has worked as an illustrator and art educator. She also had an art supply and framing business in Nashville and is past president of Indiana Heritage Arts. Her plein air oil painting has an impressionistic style and has been described as poetic and sensitive. Her paintings are in collections in the U. S. and abroad. Tom Tuley, president of the Art Gallery s Artists Association, took early retirement from a 38-year newspaper career (the last 12 as editor/publisher of the Evansville, IN newspapers) in 1995 and moved to Brown county in A watercolorist, he specializes in rural and urban landscapes, still lifes and scenes from his travels (Italy, Australia, New Mexico, New England, etc.). Witherspoon, of Linton, IN, is a self-taught watercolorist who paints flowers, still life and buildings in traditional or impressionistic style, but likes to try new
5 techniques. Commissions accepted , Fellowship Artists Monique Cagle, originally from Brown County, lives a few miles from Yellowwood State Forest, not far from her childhood home. She paints primarily in acrylics, and her subjects range from landscapes to colorful still-lifes and portraits of her animals. Her work can be seen at the Brown County Art Gallery, Gallery by the Green in Nashville, Artworks of Martinsville and on her website, Sleepycatstudio.com. Jodie Friend Mary Jo Limp, who began sketching at age 6, is mostly self-taught, although a life of learning has ensued through art museums, art galleries, art books and workshops. She belongs to many art organizations and is very active in the Indiana Plein Air Painters. She has also studied under many well-known artists, including Dwight Steininger and C. W. Mundy, and has attended the Scottsdale School of Fine Arts in Scottsdale, Arizona Nancy Maxwell David Owen. Sharon Steiner earned a Graphic Design/Visual Communication degree from John Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, but the lure of turpentine and colorful paint brushes was too much temptation to resist.
