WARMEST OF WELCOMES OF WELCOMES WARMEST Warmest of Welcomes Ireland has been extending its warm welcome to overseas visitors for hundreds of years gaining a worldwide reputation for our friendly nature and convivial approach to life. Beyond a reputation for academic quality and choice, students are drawn to Ireland for our deep cultural traditions, diverse outdoor activities and a vibrant young population. The country of a hundred thousand welcomes, Ireland has become synonymous with wit, intellect and lively debate.

ADVENTURE The country s rugged landscape and 4,800 kms of coastline is internationally acclaimed by athletes as the perfect location for extreme sports. The country has made a name for its water sport hotspots and was home to the European Surfing Championships which attracted hundreds of surfers from all over the world. Feel the adrenalin of walking to the top of Europe s highest sea cliffs at Sliabh Liag in Donegal. CULTURE Dublin is the birthplace of more Nobel literary laureates than any other city in the world. 2 3 Ireland s new president Michael D Higgins is a huge supporter of the Arts and his presidential campaign was endorsed by Hollywood veteran Martin Sheen. Ireland has a wealth of Irish artists whose work commands massive interest (and prices) Francis Bacon holds the record for most expensive Irish painting titled Triptych which sold at auction for $86.3m.

BEAUTY Killarney National Park - established in 1932 to protect one of Ireland s most precious natural habitats. Beneath the wild, rugged summits of the country s highest mountains, it encloses a beautiful sylvan landscape of ancient woodland, spectacular waterfalls and quiet lakes. Newgrange - a passage tomb more than 5000 years old making it older than Stonehenge and the pyramids whose central chamber is illuminated by the sun on the 21st December on the winter solstice, amazing. The Burren - a region of outstanding significance in an international context in terms of its geology, geomorphology, natural history and archaeology. More than 700 different flowering plants and ferns accounting for 75% of the Irish native species have been recorded there many not found anywhere else in the world! LOCATION Ireland is just a 1 hour flight away from London and most other UK cities or you can take a boat across the Irish Sea in 90minutes. Many central European cities such as Paris, Berlin, Milan are less than a 2 hours flight away, skiing anyone? The southern Mediterranean coast of Spain and Italy are less than 3 hours away with long sandy white beaches.

SPORT Hurling is the world s fastest team game in terms of game play. Gaelic Football is the biggest spectator sport in the Republic of Ireland. We have no shortage of Irish golfing stars Paul McGinley, Darren Clarke, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Padraig Harrington. MYTHOLOGY Ireland is enchanting. Behind every tree is the expectation of a fairy, at the end of every rainbow is the proverbial crock of gold and every cobbler with a glint in his eye may just turn out to be a leprechaun! The imagination of the Irish and their talent for story-telling has ensured the survival and evolution of Ireland s myths and legends over thousands of years. Its legends embrace magical beings and strong supernatural heroes who fought and romanced, charmed and outwitted. This is Ireland and in a land where reality and fantasy is thinly separated, where does the history really end and fiction begin? Why not come and decide for yourself, it s all part of the fun.

FESTIVALS Oxegen - Ireland s biggest contemporary music festival and Tradfest - our traditional music festival which attracts thousands of people from overseas to be part of the celebrations each year. The St. Patrick s Festival is the biggest festival in the annual calendar. St Patrick s Day is celebrated in more countries around the world than any other, and is a national holiday in Ireland. The International Oyster and Seafood festival is the longest running in the world and draws some 10,000 food lovers each September.

7 STEPS TO GETTING HERE STEPS TO GETTING HERE 7 ONE Choose your institution and programme Collect all the information you can about your chosen institution and the programmes you hope to study. Once happy with your choice, contact the institution and ask them to send you detailed information on both the programme and on application procedures. See for full list of Irish institutions.

TWO Apply for your place Go through all the information carefully and ensure that your academic and English language standards meet those required for your programme. Selection criteria may vary and it s important you provide everything that the institution has requested. THREE Confirm your place If you are offered a place, you will be asked to send the admission fee to confirm your acceptance. Do this as soon as possible in order to secure your place.

FOUR Book your accommodation When you have accepted your place, it s a good idea to start planning the practical aspects of living in Ireland. Try to organise your accommodation well in advance of your arrival. With the help of your institution s accommodation officer (most Irish institutions have them), decide whether a rented apartment, student accommodation or home stay would best suit you. FIVE Get your passport Make sure you get your passport as soon as possible. If you have a passport, check that it s valid for the required amount of time. If it s due to expire in less than a year, you should apply for a new one.

SIX Your visa and immigration As an international student, you should ensure that you have your letter of acceptance from the institution, along with proof of sufficient funds and medical insurance, when you arrive at Immigration. You may also require a visa if so you should apply for one as early as possible. See for full details on visa requirements. SEVEN Your arrival in Ireland All your documents should be in order on arrival, and you should have fulfilled all the requirements of your visa approval. If your stay exceeds 90 days, you will need to register with the Garda Síochana (Irish police). You must do this within three months of your arrival. As a full time student, registered with the Gardaí, you are permitted to work up to a maximum of 20 hours a week.

TUITION & LIVING COSTS & LIVING COSTS TUITION EXPENSES Visa regulations in Ireland require international students to show evidence that they can contribute to the cost of living and studying in Ireland. This helps to ensure students are better able to make the most of their studies and have a safe and enjoyable experience in Ireland. While international students are able to supplement their income with money earned through part-time work in Ireland the living costs requirement helps to support the success of students in their studies by ensuring that they don t have to rely on such work to meet all their expenses. On average we estimate that a student will spend between 6000 and per year depending on location and lifestyle. ONE-OFF COSTS As well as your course costs there are other one-off costs (this means costs which you only have to pay once, not regularly) which you may have to pay if you are travelling to Ireland. Make a note of the ones which apply to you and estimate the total cost of these. Visa application Travel insurance Medical insurance Post/baggage to/from Ireland Registration with police Television Mobile phone Deposit for Accommodation You will probably have to pay a deposit if you move into accommodation that is privatelyowned. This is usually the same amount as about 4 weeks of rent. It should be returned to you at the end of your stay unless you have damaged the property in some way.

TUITION FEES Tuition costs vary considerably depending on the institution and the study programme. Tuition costs do not remain static, so it is important to double check fees with the Institution(s) you are considering applying to.
