3 Executive Summary Big Data analytics (BDA) is a powerful driver for change in business and operational models. Hardly any industry is isolated from the increasing possibilities to create better understanding and enable better-informed, smarter, and faster decisions thanks to new BDA capabilities. The better a business understands BDA, the better it becomes at exploiting BDA opportunities in its specific industry. Facilities management (FM) is not traditionally known as a high-tech industry. However: o Leaders of integrated facilities management (IFM)* are at the forefront of a constant exploration of trends, technologies, and wider opportunities in pursuit of greater business value. Amongst other things, this has brought an increasing interest in leveraging BDA in these companies. o FM has seen a general trend towards managing facilities intelligently, e.g., with reduced workforce requirements or to generate additional benefits out of buildings through energy savings or optimisation/reduction of floor space areas in which enhanced insight from BDA can provide value. These trends imply the need to discover and develop tangible, concrete use cases to leverage the power of BDA in IFM firms. The exploration of such use cases is the ultimate goal of this research service. *The term IFM is used in this deliverable to describe the total integration of resources and services to support the operation of an organisation under the control of a single company. This is in contrast to the delivery of individual services by different external companies or internal control by the client itself. 9A

4 Objective, Scope, and Methodology Objective This research service provides an introduction to and exploration of BDA opportunities in FM. It is an exploratory piece of work, focused on presenting real and potential use cases, and key trends driving the uptake of BDA in FM companies. Scope BDA in FM includes a wide range of services such as hardware (e.g., server storage) and software providers (e.g., processing and analytics services). This research service is largely technology-agnostic and focused on applied business cases. Methodology This research service draws upon wide secondary research, which includes internal Frost & Sullivan databases and external insights on the topic, and was complemented by primary research/discussions with FM software and BDA providers. 9A

Veracity as a further attribute reflect the Big Data reality of imperfect consistency and certainty, and increased messiness of data.
