2 Use Naviance to take inventory of your strengths and interests and learn about possible careers that match your profile. Use Naviance to build your resume. Take the SAT I, SAT II (subject tests), and/or ACTs. Research and visit schools to finalize a college list. (Try to stay under 10)

8 OTHER Application Types

9 Anytime after August 1st, go to the Common Application website and create an account. NOTE: We no longer use Naviance to submit documents for students. Everything is submitted through the Common App or other application type.

10 Complete the initial Common App tasks (i.e. Profile and Education), add at least one college to My Colleges and sign the FERPA Release Authorization. Once you have signed this it CANNOT be changed.

11 TEACHERS After asking teachers in person, invite your teachers on the Common App. Within each school tab, click on Recommenders and FERPA. You need to invite teachers for each school you apply to. If a school only accepts 1 letter of rec, only invite the teacher you want to submit for that school. COUNSELORS Within the Common App tab of your account and in the Education section, list your counselor s name and address (This will prompt an invitation to him/her). NOTE: Please be careful of spelling!

12 OTHER RECOMMENDERS Within each school tab, click on Recommenders and FERPA. Other Recommender will be listed if this college accepts a letter of recommendation from someone other than your teacher or counselor (i.e. coach, employer, clergy, etc.) Click on Invite Recommender and enter in the recommender s name, position, and address. Click on Assign recommender to invite this person to submit a letter of rec for that school.

13 Non- Common Application Schools: ONLINE: Colleges that accept online submission of documents (i.e. Send.edu, Individual College Websites) MAIL-ONLY: Colleges that only accept documents via mail Students applying to non-common Application schools are required to complete a Transcript Request form located in the Guidance Office. This form communicates college deadlines and the ways in which transcripts and counselor letters of recommendation will be sent to individual colleges. NOTE: 1. Students must provide teachers with stamped, self-addressed envelopes for Mail-Only schools. 2. Students must provide counselors and teachers with two-weeks notice for all college applications.

17 Common App Schools STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY: -Create an account on the website (August 1 st is the rollover date) -Fill out the application and follow all necessary school-specific requirements (i.e. supplemental essays) -Send out standardized test scores (ACTs, SATs, SAT IIs) to each school that you are applying to through on-line account -Request letters of recommendation from teachers (at least 2 in core subject area) ****note: teachers and guidance counselor must be invited on through the Common Application via at least 2 weeks before first admissions deadline COUNSELOR RESPONSIBILITY: -Fill out student s secondary school report -Write letter of recommendation for student -Upload student s transcript, school profile, and counselor letter of recommendation on to the Common Application

18 Non-Common App Schools STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY -Fill out a transcript request form in guidance -Request recommendations from BOTH teachers and guidance counselor (at least 2 weeks before deadline) Note: teacher & guidance recommendations can still be submitted electronically (i.e. Send.edu, Universal, school on-line application) after being invited via e- mail to do so Mail only schools: Teacher Recommendations: Provide addressed and stamped envelopes along with any school required forms Guidance Recommendations: Letter, transcript, and required forms will be sent by mail. Send out standardized test scores (ACTs, SATs, SAT IIs) to each school you are applying to COUNSELOR RESPONSIBILITY -Fill out any paperwork required by school using -Submit student s transcript, school profile, and any other school specific documents to schools. -Submit counselor letter of recommendation as requested by student to schools.

19 Common Application Essay Prompts Start Brainstorming ideas now! We are pleased to share the Essay Prompts with you. New language appears in italics: 1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. 2. The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? 3. Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again? 4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma-anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. 5. Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community.
