1 NORTHEAST HIGH SCHOOL Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Telephone (215) Fax (215) Class 174 College Application Procedures This document serves to help students and parents understand the multiple parts of the college application process. Read the entire document first. Be aware that there are multiple pieces to this process and it is not necessarily in sequential order. At the end of this document, student and parent signatures are required and will be placed in the student s college file. Part 1 Pre-Application Compile a list of schools. The list should include 5 to 7 schools. Do the research about your chances of acceptance based on your school preferences, SAT scores, GPA and overall resume. Resources for this search are available on NEHS1.com under the counseling tab. Read this entire Class 174 College Application Procedures document. Parent and student sign the Class 174 College Application Procedures Agreement on the last page of this document and return it to the College Office. Part 2 The Application Obtain applications for each school by downloading them from each school s website, accessing CommonApp.org or using the school s online application form. Complete a draft of each application. Have parents, advisor and/or counselor review final draft. Make sure all student portions are complete. Write the required essay or essays and have someone proofread them. When using the Common App, check if the college requires a Common Application Supplement. Request SAT/ACT scores from the respective testing services to be sent directly to your colleges. This can be done at for the SAT and/or for the ACT. Keep track of all deadlines.

2 Mail/submit electronically your portion of the application. You are responsible for mailing a paper application or submitting electronically your application (including the application, fee, essay, etc.). Bring to the College Office any additional forms to complete. Part 3 Transcripts In order to minimize paper use, transcript requests will be monitored on a single Transcript Request form. The first request will require both parent and student signatures. Subsequent requests will require student initials at the College Office. (Students who are applying via the Common App or other electronic document services will have their transcripts submitted electronically, once the counselor has been assigned by the student, and do not have to submit envelopes.) Transcript Request forms can be found in the College Office or in the Document Library link under the Counseling tab at NEHS1.com Parents and students sign the first transcript request. Students will initial subsequent transcript requests in the College Office. Bring Transcript Request form to the College Office to be filed in your folder. If not applying via the Common App to a school, give the College Office one business/commercial envelope per school addressed to the individual school s undergraduate admission office (print clearly). Attach two stamps to the envelope. Transcripts for Penn State University will be submitted electronically after the Transcript Request form has been completed. All transcripts will be filed in your folder for you to pick-up. The College Office must be given two weeks to process transcript requests. Part 4 School Report/Counselor s Forms Forms may be called the Secondary School Report, Guidance Counselor Section, or High School Report and not every school has one of these. Students who are applying via the Common App will have their Secondary School Report submitted electronically. Complete identification information using the correct information for Northeast High School (listed at end of this document). Sign the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) form, if required, and indicate whether the student waives the right to access the teachers and the counselor s letters of recommendation. Submit non-common App Secondary School Report/Counselor s Form to the College Office.

3 If not applying via the Common App to a school, provide one envelope per school addressed to the individual school s undergraduate admission office (print clearly). Attach two stamps to the envelope. It is not necessary to put a return address-we have a stamp for this purpose. The College Office will file these completed forms in your folder in the College Office along with your transcripts and school profile. You are responsible for retrieving and mailing your forms in a timely manner. Counselor s Forms for Penn State University will be submitted electronically when the transcript is requested. It is not necessary to print this form or submit it to your counselor due to the electronic relationship Northeast has with Penn State. The College Office must be given two weeks to process any Counselor Forms. Part 5 Teacher/Advisor Recommendations Students applying through the Common Application (commonapp.org) must sign the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) form and indicate whether they waive their right to access their letters of recommendations. Students applying via the Common App will have their teacher recommendation sent electronically and are not required to submit envelopes and stamps. Additional counselor forms are to be given to the College Office. Meet with the teacher to discuss the request for recommendation. Fill out the recommender portion of the Common App with the teacher s information. Meet with your counselor to discuss your request for recommendation and complete your student information sheet. If it s a non-common App school that has paper form(s), complete the identification information on each form and submit it to the teacher, including an addressed and stamped envelope to be sent directly to the school. Submit all requests at least two weeks prior to the deadline. Write a thank you note to your teachers for their efforts on your behalf. Major Deadlines (For information being requested from the College Office) October 1 For students who are applying Early Decision/Early Action or rolling admission who need materials mailed before November 1. October 15 For students who apply to Penn State University, the drop-dead deadline is the date which gives students the best chance to be accepted by the university. October 30 For students who are applying Early Decision/Early Action or rolling admission who need materials mailed before November 15.

4 December 1 -- If an application has a deadline of January 1 or earlier, students must have requests in no later than December 1. This is a very busy time for the College Office and we need the time between Thanksgiving and the holiday break to process the volume of paperwork in a timely and accurate manner. January 15 Deadline to submit all college applications, including community college. For all applications When students request any information that needs to be handled by the College Office (this includes applications and scholarship forms), they must allow two weeks (vacation days not included) for paperwork to be completed. Please plan ahead to avoid missing deadlines. School Code/Counselor Information It is very important you list the correct school and counselor information on your applications. There are other schools in Pennsylvania with names similar to Northeast High School. If you list the school or your counselor incorrectly, your application may be delayed.
