7 Watson demonstrates the art of the possible, but analytics-driven organizations are using some of the same underlying technologies as Watson to optimize their businesses today. Unstructured Information Management Architecture (UIMA) is the IBM developed open-source framework for analysis of unstructured content, such as natural language text, speech, images and video, which Watson uses to perform deep analysis over vast amounts of content. Products such as InfoSphere Warehouse, InfoSphere Streams and IBM Content Analytics also use UIMA for text analytics. Hadoop is Apache open source software for scalable, distributed computing used to analyze and process a broad set of information including unstructured content. It is the software framework Watson uses for distributing the workload for processing information as it learns and is the same innovative technology that is available in InfoSphere BigInsights. Eclipse is an open source tools platform originated in IBM development and then launched as an open source community. It is the platform for Watson's analysis and development tools and is also the base for development and administration environments in the InfoSphere, Optim, WebSphere and Rational portfolios. DB2 holds the vast amounts of data generated by Watson s thought processes as it determines correct answers. This data is stored during test games for post game analysis to enable system improvement. DB2 originated in IBM Research in the invention of the relation database management system and is also the foundational technology behind InfoSphere Warehouse. This IBM Research invention is also found in IBM Informix software and recently acquired IBM Netezza appliances.
