2 Strongly Recommended for Helpers: Have current CPR/First Aid certification Infant/Child CPR Actively expand their knowledge base and skills Create a resume FAMILY SCREENING Family Helpers screens client families prior to placing a Helper with them. All of our client families complete a detailed application, which includes information regarding previous employees and a job description. In addition, we strongly encourage all families to outline the roles, responsibilities and expectations of their Helper prior to beginning the interview process. ONGOING SUPPORT Family Helpers wants our Helpers to succeed. In addition to being available to discuss work related issues, we regularly host social get-togethers and holiday parties for our Helpers. HELPER RESPONSIBILITIES & SALARIES Nannies Nannies are experienced childcare professionals. Although nannies may or may not have specialized training in childcare or child development, they usually have extensive (minimum 2 years) experience working with children. Nannies are employed by the family with whom they are placed to undertake all tasks related to the care of the family s children. Nannies strive to promote the physical, social, intellectual and emotional health of the children in their care by providing age appropriate activities and opportunities. Nannies provide light housekeeping pertaining to the children, which may include: Keeping the children s rooms tidy and encouraging the children to do the same Tending to the children s laundry Simple meal preparation for the children Running simple errands like picking up dry cleaning On average, nannies work between hours per week. The live-in nannies we place typically earn a salary of $ per week and the live-out nannies we place typically earn $15-$20 per hour info@familyhelpers.com
3 Newborn Care Specialists Newborn care specialists are hired by families to provide care for newborn babies during their first few weeks of life. Most newborn care specialists do have specialized training, but most are not trained nurses. Newborn care specialists are capable of providing round the clock care for infants and may be employed to work nights (8 12 hours) or 24 hour shifts. The newborn care specialists we place typically earn $17 per hour and up for night shifts. For 24 hour shifts the salaries begin at $250 for one child. Babysitters Babysitters are hired by families to provide supervisory care of children on a part-time, as needed basis. Typically babysitters earn $15-20 per hour, depending on the number of children in their care. Mothers Helpers Mother s helpers work as childcare assistants. Mothers helpers don t usually have the training or the experience to provide unsupervised child care for extended periods of time. Mothers helpers may assist with light housekeeping. The mothers helpers we place work up to 40 hours per week and earn $15 per hour and up. Doulas Doulas are professional postpartum care providers. In addition to helping new mothers with basic baby care, our doulas may run errands, babysit older children and provide light housekeeping. Doulas are always employed by families on a live-out basis and typically work four to eight hours per day for two to three weeks after the birth of a new baby. On average the doulas we place earn $20-$25 per hour. Companions Companions care for older individuals who are in need of non-medical assistance to successfully live independently. Companions typically help with light housekeeping, run errands, and provide transportation, in addition to spending quality time with their clients. Companions may be employed by families on a live-in or live-out basis. The live-in companions we place earn a minimum of $700 per week and the live-out companions we place earn $15-$20 per hour info@familyhelpers.com
4 Housekeepers Housekeepers are employed by families to tend to their home. Housekeepers may clean their employer s entire home, do grocery shopping, prepare meals, tend to laundry and keep the home tidy and in order. In addition, housekeepers may also do occasional babysitting, if they have childcare experience. Families may employ housekeepers on a live-in or live-out basis. On average, the live-in housekeepers we place earn a minimum of $700 per week and the live-out housekeepers we place earn $20-$25 per hour. EMPLOYMENT TAXES We require Helpers to provide us with their Social Security Number and proof that they are legally able to accept employment in the United States. It is required by law that all household employers pay Social Security, Medicare, and Federal unemployment taxes on all household employees. If you request, your employer must also withhold federal and state taxes from your paycheck. Depending on where you live, your employer may also be liable for state unemployment and/or disability taxes. Contact the IRS and your State Department of Labor, or one of the following household payroll and tax service providers for more information. Breedlove & Associates call or visit GTM Payroll Services or visit EMPLOYEE/EMPLOYER RELATIONSHIP Like any employee/employer relationship, when there is a mutual understanding of employment terms prior to the start of employment, the employment experience is much smoother. Family Helpers encourages families and nannies to create an employment agreement that outlines each party s role, responsibilities and expectations prior to the Helper s start date. Doing so will help to clarify the employer- Helper relationship. The use of an automobile, telephone, internet and television should be discussed prior to employment and outlined in the employer-helper agreement. Visitor policy should also be discussed before employment begins and should be included in the employment agreement. We also recommend that a work schedule be provided to you by your employer. It should be reviewed by you prior to the start of your employment and included in the work agreement. For live-in Helpers, it is especially important that when you are expected to be on and off duty is outlined. Typically Helpers are given two full days off each week info@familyhelpers.com
5 Family Helpers educates families and nannies on current employment practices. Families are encouraged to provide a minimum of two weeks paid vacation, sick days, and a minimum of 6 major paid holidays off to employees working full-time. These benefits are customary within the household employment industry. We have information available on group health insurance rates for Helpers. Health insurance is sometimes offered (in part or in full) as an employee benefit. ABOUT OUR PRESIDENT Founded in 1995, Family Helpers is owned and managed by its president, Susan Tokayer. Susan is an active member in the in-home child care industry and has served on the board of directors of the International Nanny Association since Susan currently serves as the association s co-president. Recognized as an expert in the field of in-home child care, Susan has been featured in Westchester WAG magazine, The New York Times, Forbes, Parents magazine, Westchester Parent magazine and Westchester Family magazine. She has given radio interviews on WGCH, Greenwich, CT and to the BBC. Click here for Family Helpers in the News. Click here for Fox Business News interview. As a former psychiatric social worker and working mother herself, Susan has firsthand experience with the challenges parents face when trying to secure quality in-home child care for their young children. As a result of her experience, Susan retired from social work and Family Helpers was born. When Susan became a caretaker for an elderly parent, she decided it was time to expand Family Helpers service offerings. Out of her own personal experience, companions were added to Family Helper s growing list of quality domestic services provided. It is Susan s personal and professional mission to help families find high quality, well-screened Family Helpers. Where children or other family members are concerned, people deserve the very best and Family Helpers delivers just that info@familyhelpers.com
