Your sons and daughters will proclaim my message. Acts 2:17 Come, Holy Spirit, strengthen our belief and understanding of your gifts in our lives. Strengthen our collective purpose and determination to develop these gifts, so we are renewed in our Christian lives. Reading: It is through the actions of the Holy Spirit that the presence of Jesus remains alive and active in the Church. We know Jesus, now, through the Holy Spirit which is his own Spirit. In John s Gospel we hear Jesus explicit promise to be with those who believe in him and to send the Holy Spirit to teach the Church and to continually keep alive in the Church his work and words. Though the Church is a community of flawed human beings, the Holy Spirit has constantly called her throughout her 2000 year history to repentance and renewal and is the source of her life and fruitfulness. Prayer: Jesus, through Your Holy Spirit, give us today: Something of the wisdom that was in your words; Something of the love that was in your heart; Something of the help that was in your hands. Give us today: Something of your patience with people; Something of your ability to bear insults and bitterness without resentment; Something of your capacity to forgive. Help us to live in such a way that others will be aware that today we are walking with you, that your Spirit is our guide. Dear Parents, The Kindy hours will be extended in 2013 from 11 to 15 hours per week. In order to accommodate children for the extra time, the Liwara School Board has been working towards building an additional Early Childhood facility. It is expected that if the final costings are within the allocated budget, work on this project will commence in early third term. In preparation for the project the OSHC service will be relocated during the holidays to the east side of the school for the remainder of the year. This will not impact on the OSHC holiday program. The Art area will return to where OSHC is at present but be accessed internally via the breezeway outside the old library. The maintenance shed will be relocated and the toilet block near the pre-primary teaching area will be demolished to clear the site for the new Early Childhood Centre (ECC). The scope of works will also include an extension to the existing Kindergarten. It is likely the access to the school via the lower car park on Tuart Road will be disrupted for the duration of the building project. I am confident with cooperation, patience and understanding we will be able to adapt to the changed circumstances. confirmation As the Year 6 students complete their preparation to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on June 28 and 29 I ask that the Holy Spirit helps each of them to grow in their relationship with God, to live in His influence and to use His gifts. Instead of the Holy Spirit being a focus of the children for just a short time I pray that Holy Spirit will be a life companion, always available, never judgemental, always a loving act of God s love in their life. The students will complete their preparation with a retreat on Thursday June 21st. This is a special time for the children and their families and I wish everyone great joy and grace as they celebrate Confirmation.

2 Contd. Confirmation will be celebrated at All Saints at 7.00pm on Thursday June 28th and Friday June 29th. I acknowledge the following people for the parts they are playing in making the celebration of Confirmation a meaningful and special occasion. Mr Oliver Banks for facilitating and coordinating all aspects of the Confirmation preparation program including the workshops, the retreat and the Confirmation liturgy as well as the booklet. Fr Vinh for his pastoral guidance, participation and support. The Year 6 teachers Mr Chitty, Mr Banks and Ms Ballantine Students, their families and the sponsors for the way you have shared in and supported the program. The Catechists from the parish including Mrs Helen Medina who have assisted with the preparation of candidates, the presentation of work shops and the organization of the Confirmation celebration. Mrs Amanda McCabe who has prepared the choir for the celebrations. The students who will be members of the choir and lead the singing. The families of the choir members who are supporting them to fulfill this commitment. Mrs Anthea Pickering who prepared the certificates. The Liwara staff who support these special occasions in many different ways. Confirmation Thursday June 28 7pm (6Red Mr Banks/ Mr Chitty) Friday June 29 7pm (6Green Miss Ballantine) School prayer Parents are welcome to join us for our whole school prayer services held in the All Saints Church. Please remember prayer services are just that and are not to be applauded. I also ask that parents assist us in ensuring that there is respect and reverence when using the church by setting a good example. The Year 6 s will lead the prayer service on Monday June 25th. The whole school prayer services begin at 2.40pm. Assembly The next assembly for the year will be held on Friday June 22nd at 9.00am in the Ahern Centre. The Year 1 students will lead and present the assembly items. Parents are most welcome to join us for the assembly and the presentation of awards. School reports Reports will be distributed on Thursday July 5th. It is important to take the time to celebrate achievements and then set new learning goals for next term. Confirmation retreat Next Thursday 21st June the Year 6 students will be continuing their journey towards the Sacrament of Confirmation by taking part in a Retreat. The retreat gives students an opportunity to reflect on what they have studied in class and prepare themselves for the coming of the Holy Spirit. This day is an important part of the Confirmation program and we ask for your ongoing prayers as the students move closer to their Confirmation date. Music assembly Today we had the Music Assembly. Many parents and grandparents attended this showcase of talent. Many thanks to the children and their music teachers for the inspiring performances. School photos The 2011 school photos were distributed to the classrooms last week. The family photos can be collected via the front office. liwara Cross country faction carnival DATE: Tuesday 19th June VENUE: School Oval Times: Year 1 s 9.00am Year 2 s 9.20am Year 3 s 9.40am Year 4 s 10.10am Year 5 s 11.20am Year 6 s 12.00pm All students to participate. Students to wear sports uniform. The first 6 finishers (boys and girls) in years 3,4,5 and 6 go to the interschool carnival. Thus 12 students per year. Interschool Carnival Interschool lightning carnival On Friday June 22nd all Year 5 and 6 students will be participating in the annual Interschool Winter Carnival. At each venue the carnival will run from 9.30am to 2.00pm. Each student will take part in one of the following sports Football, Netball or Soccer. Buses will transport the students to the following venues- Football - Carine Open Space Netball - Kingsway Sporting Complex Soccer (Boys)- Kingsway Sporting Complex Soccer (Girls)- Chichester Park. Busses will leave school at 8.40am. Please ensure that all students be at school by 8.30am Term dates The last day of school for Term 2 is Friday July 6th. We wish everyone a restful and happy holiday. The first day of Term 3 is Monday July 23rd.

3 Interschool Chess Team The interschool chess team of Jacob Herbert (Capt), Hannah Norriss, Kevin Mesquita and John Paul Acres ably represented the school last Wednesday. Their behavior and sportsmanship was a credit to them and Liwara. I was very proud of them as they had to play up a grade which they did without fuss, and they still ended up just out of the medals. Great job team! Perth little league baseballers Congratulations to Zac Thompson (Year 6) and ex Liwara Student Lincoln Kempton (Year 7) for competing in the Austral Asia tournament in Queensland early July They have now qualified for the Asia tournament which commences on July 6th in Taiwan. There are 14 kids from the local charter of baseball clubs which are Carine, (whom both of these boys represent), Wanneroo, and North Coast. The boys have been training since November and had to go through a month of try out sessions to gain selection. They currently train 3-4 times each week to prepare to face some very tough competition in Asia. The winner of the Asian tournament goes to The International Little League World Series held in Williamsport, PA USA in August. Lincoln s father is the Head coach of the team so it carries extra significance for our family and extra commitment but we are delighted for the boys to have this opportunity to be the 1 st WA team to go on to the Asian tournament. Science in the Holidays at Scitech There are a range of holiday activities for our junior scientist including: for the 9 11 year old groups are in the Digital Studio 3D animation on 11 July and Animation Junior in Outer Space on 13 July, in the CSIRO Lab also for 7-9 year olds. Perhaps try Fizzy Chemistry or Molecular Origami on 17 July, each of these opportunities range from 1 to 2 hours and costs vary. Don t forget about the Dinosaur Invasion great for budding palaeontologists of all ages; ring Scitech for more infomration Shaun Tan Art Award Finalist Congratulations to Devon Udall who has been selected as a finalist for the Shaun Tan Art award. She completed an artwork using batik technique. The Shaun Tan Award is a prestigious art award run by the Town of Subiaco and the competition is very competitive so to become a finalist is very impressive. Well done Devon! Canteen We rely on parent help to keep the Canteen operating. Our Manager Helen Miller would be delighted to speak to parents, grandparents etc who may be interested in volunteering in the Canteen. 4 SEASONS FOR GROWTH LEARNING TO LIVE WITH CHANGE AND LOSS We are once again looking at running the Seasons For Growth program in Term 3 this year. Seasons for Growth is a wonderful program that is aimed at children and young people who have experienced change or loss in their lives. These changes or losses can be due to death of a significant person, divorce and/or separation. The program is facilitated in small groups of similarly aged peers and is based on research which highlights the importance of social support and the need to practice new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program not only focuses on ways of dealing with loss but also on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and support networks. Feedback from past participants and their parents has been overwhelming and positive, with almost all reporting significant increases in their child s level of functioning and general feeling of well being. If you would like your child to participate please return the slip below to the front office. I ask that even if you have spoken to me previously that you still complete the slip so as to ensure that you receive all the relevant information regarding the program. If you would like more information about this program please do not hesitate to contact me (either Tuesdays or Wednesdays) and we can discuss the program further and how it may help your child.
