2 Introduction Art Therapy can be defined as a form of psychotherapy that utilises a creative medium to allow an additional and alternate way for individuals to explore and understand their life experiences in a safe and therapeutic environment. Art therapy has been established in Europe and America as a profession since the 1960 s and is practised with a variety of client groups e.g. psychiatry, learning disabilities. Its history can be linked to the development of the arts in society including Outsider Art, Art Education and to the developments of Psycho-analysis/ Psychotherapy in the 20th century. For the past twenty two years the Cork Summer School in Art Therapy has welcomed up to sixty participants annually, providing them with a unique opportunity to learn about and experience the Art Therapy process. Participants are offered the chance to explore the therapeutic potential of art through experiential workshops. A series of related lectures during the week allows participants the opportunity to process their content in a structured way. For some this Summer School may be the first steps on the road to a career in Art Therapy. For others it may be an opportunity to re-engage with their creative identity. Every year this course has proved to be an invaluable personal encounter, whatever one s motivation for attending. The intensive workshop and lecture series will provide a stimulating, challenging and ultimately rewarding experience for everyone. Louise Foott Course Co-ordinator

3 Art Therapy at CCAD Cork Art Therapy Summer School Art Therapy Open Day Introductory Weekends Principles of Art Therapy Certificate Arts in Group Facilitation Certificate MA in Art Therapy For over two decades the college has worked to establish a strong Art Therapy Department, providing a range of opportunities for learning about, and experiencing, the Art Therapy process. Pioneering art therapy training in Ireland, the Summer School was set up in Building on its success, the Crawford College established an Art Therapy Foundation Course (now Principles of Art Therapy Certificate, a HETAC Level 8 accredited course). Currently this runs over 16 days in the academic year and provides an opportunity to explore the core principles of Art Therapy within a group setting. Through workshops, lectures and seminars participants gain.a deeper introduction to Art Therapy. For many this introduction may be a step towards training as a qualified Art Therapist, for others it may introduce them to a more sympathetic understanding of the role of art in rehabilitation and development work. Over the years our department has developed a range of other courses to meet the increasing demand to find out more about Art Therapy. We offer an Art Therapy Open Day (at the end of March each year). Our Introductory weekends explore the theory and practice of Art Therapy, together with an opportunity to work experientially. The aim of the Arts in Group Facilitation Certificate (another HETAC Level 8 accredited course), is to facilitate people in the development of their leadership skills in creative group work. Training on the course is experiential; participants are facilitated in workshops, learning both through their experience as participants in the workshop and the leadership of the facilitator. Ultimately we offer the qualifying Masters Degree in Art Therapy. This professional training course was the first of its kind in Ireland and for over a decade now, Irishtrained art therapists graduate annually. Once the Summer School has begun it will not be possible to change workshops. The Crawford College of Art & Design reserves the right to retain the fee in full in the event of cancellations made after Friday 15th June Cancellation prior to that date will incur a 50 administrative handling charge. The Crawford College of Art & Design reserves the right to make alterations to the programme if necessary. If you must be absent during the Summer School, please inform the co-ordinator. Students should wear comfortable, appropriate clothing. 5 Workshop 1 Austin Creaven Austin trained in the Fine Arts in Galway, graduating in He spent many years in a variety of jobs, including working as a studio artist and working with homeless people before going on to train as an Art Psychotherapist at Goldsmiths College, University of London, graduating in He returned to Ireland to be involved in setting up an art therapy service in Limerick City called the Blue Box. The project, which he co-founded and continues to work with provides a creative arts therapy service to children and adolescents, mainly through schools, in the city. Coming of Age Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. ~Scott Adams The essence of art is to play; to play with materials and to play with ideas. We can see an image that we have created in the same way that we see our dreams; they emanate from our unconscious to reflect back to us aspects of our experiences or of ourselves; to give us insight. An image may come from the tips of our fingers; our fingers are connected to our hands, our arms, our bodies, our hearts and souls. The image is directly connected to our inner emotional world. If we can afford ourselves the opportunity to play with ideas and to engage in the process of art making we give ourselves the opportunity to explore our deeper felt emotions, some that are known to us and others yet unknown. By immersing ourselves in a creative environment to avail of a space full of potential, adventure and discovery, we give credence to our creativity and to our instincts; parts of us that are often smothered or lost amidst the normal pressures and constraints of our everyday lives. These workshops are designed to allow the participant to undertake their personal journey of self exploration, both through the lone pursuit of personal art making and through the shared experience of group artwork. Formal art training or experience are not necessary. 3

6 Workshop 2 Janek Dubowski Janek Dubowski trained as an Art Therapist in the early 1970 s and following an initial career within a specialised NHS psychiatric hospital, he was awarded a PhD in Comparative Psychology for his pioneering research into the application of art therapy in the early 1980 s. He is also a trained Counsellor (Psychodynamic) and Psychotherapist (Integrative) as well as a Charted Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. Currently he holds a senior academic position at Roehampton University: London where he has developed the first Jungian based Art Psychotherapy Programme in the UK. An Introduction to Jungian Analytical Art Psychotherapy Analytical Art Psychotherapy is now the accepted term for a Jungian based approach to the therapeutic application of art. Carl Gustav Jung ( ) was perhaps the first psychoanalyst to fully appreciate and use art-making as a way to access the Unconscious. He considers that art-making is a form of active- Imagination and that essentially, the language of the unconscious is through symbols. He also pioneered the use of the Mandala or Sacred Circle as a particular form of symbolic communication, and in this workshop we will focus on the use of the Personal Mandala In Art Therapy. 4

7 Workshop 3 Joan Phillips Joan Phillips has been a clinical art therapist in the United States for the past 30 years working with diverse populations. She holds a Doctorate in Interdisciplinary Studies and Master s degrees in Psychology and Art Therapy and currently has a private practice of art therapy in her hometown of Norman, Oklahoma. She recently spent four months in Ireland as a Fulbright Scholar and has taught and trained in Taiwan, Korea and South Africa in addition to Ireland. Joan s art expression is primarily in mixed media, assemblage, collage and poetry. Joan teaches in the School of Art and Art History at the University of Oklahoma, and is adjunct faculty at New York University and Florida State University. Thresholds and Doors: Entering Your Creative Space Doors possess magical qualities in stories and fairy tales and folklore. They are entrances through which imagination moves. ~Robert Sardello This workshop will focus on providing a safe and empowering environment for participant s imagination and expression to take form. Participants will be encouraged to reflect upon their individual life stories and engage in self-discovery through artistic expression and exploration of the unique doors, passageways and thresholds in their lives. Through a variety of art forms we will explore the concept of entry and passageways. Participants will work alone and in small groups with some framework of guidance and direction but complete freedom as well to choose a path and entry into this process that works for them. Visual art will be blended with writing and poetry as well as an exploration of the environment to produce an experiential awareness of one s own thresholds of experience and transition. If one were to give an account of all the doors one has closed and opened, of all the doors one would like to re-open, one would have to tell the story of one s entire life. ~Gaston Bachelard 5

8 Workshop 4 Terrie Grainne Young Terrie has a Fine Art background and has practiced as an Art Therapist for over 20 years within the Learning Disabilities sector, Psychiatry, Addiction and Alcohol Rehabilitation services and Education. Her private practice led her to work extensively with children on the autistic spectrum and their families, as well as a staff development initiative in Central Asian orphanages. As Lecturer and Clinical Supervisor on the Art Therapy Masters training in Cork, her research interests lie in exploring the role of art making as a tool in Clinical Supervision. She continues to examine healing modalities through Bio Energy Meditation, visualisation, the arts and their connection to the body through dance/movement practices. Terrie is also an accredited Journey Practitioner with Brandon Bays. This work influences the ongoing development of her practice and the pioneering of a method incorporating Journey work and Art Therapy. Drawing from the Cells The creative process in Art Therapy is a gateway of potential through which the image provides a unique access point to the unconscious, illuminating the light and shadow; that within us requiring our present attention for healing and empowerment. The Journey process works on the scientific premise that repressed, unconscious memories and associated emotions are stored within the cells of the body and can form the roots of dis-ease manifested through emotional, mental and physical means. The interlinking of both practices will provide an avenue for investigation, release and restoration of health, where the image provides a tangible form of guidance and expression for our inner healer and concrete affirmation of the transformations taking place. These workshops will weave the image making process with guided imagery, visualization techniques and body awareness within a group experience.
