23rd Cork Art Therapy Summer School Saturday 29 th June - Wednesday 3 rd July 2013
Introduction Art Therapy can be defined as a form of psychotherapy that utilises a creative medium to allow an additional and alternate way for individuals to explore and understand their life experiences in a safe and therapeutic environment. Art therapy has been established in Europe and America as a profession since the 1960 s and is practised with a variety of client groups e.g. psychiatry, learning disabilities. Its history can be linked to the development of the arts in society including Outsider Art, Art Education and to the developments of Psycho-analysis/ Psychotherapy in the 20th century. For the past twenty three years the Cork Summer School in Art Therapy has welcomed up to sixty participants annually, providing them with a unique opportunity to learn about and experience the Art Therapy process. Participants are offered the chance to explore the therapeutic potential of art through experiential workshops. A series of related lectures during the week allows participants the opportunity to process their content in a structured way. For some this Summer School may be the first steps on the road to a career in Art Therapy. For others it may be an opportunity to re-engage with their creative identity. Every year this course has proved to be an invaluable personal encounter, whatever one s motivation for attending. The intensive workshop and lecture series will provide a stimulating, challenging and ultimately rewarding experience for everyone. Louise Foott Course Co-ordinator
Art Therapy at CCAD Cork Art Therapy Summer School Art Therapy Open Day Introductory Weekends Principles of Art Therapy Certificate Arts in Group Facilitation Certificate MA in Art Therapy For over two decades the college has worked to establish a strong Art Therapy Department, providing a range of opportunities for learning about, and experiencing, the Art Therapy process. Pioneering art therapy training in Ireland, the Summer School was set up in Building on its success, the Crawford College established an Art Therapy Foundation Course (now Principles of Art Therapy Certificate, a HETAC Level 8 accredited course). Currently this runs over 16 days in the academic year and provides an opportunity to explore the core principles of Art Therapy within a group setting. Through workshops, lectures and seminars participants gain a deeper introduction to Art Therapy. For many this introduction may be a step towards training as a qualified Art Therapist, for others it may introduce them to a more sympathetic understanding of the role of art in rehabilitation and development work. Over the years our department has developed a range of other courses to meet the increasing demand to find out more about Art Therapy. We offer an Art Therapy Open Day (in early Spring). Our Introductory weekends explore the theory and practice of Art Therapy, together with an opportunity to work experientially. The aim of the Arts in Group Facilitation Certificate (another HETAC Level 8 accredited course), is to facilitate people in the development of their leadership skills in creative group work. Training on the course is experiential; participants are facilitated in workshops, learning both through their experience as participants in the workshop and the leadership of the facilitator. Ultimately we offer the qualifying Masters Degree in Art Therapy. This professional training course was the first of its kind in Ireland and for over a decade now, Irishtrained art therapists graduate annually. Further information and booking/application forms for all of these courses are available at or contact: Louise Foott or Catherine Phillips (from late June 2013) Crawford College of Art & Design, Sharman Crawford Street, Cork. 5 1 1 Marianne Adams Marianne Adams has an MA in Psychoanalytic Studies. Initially she worked for Childline as a Telephone Counsellor for 2 years. In a subsequent position as Head of Therapeutic Care over a community of residential children s homes she encountered the work of an Art Therapist. She was captivated, enrolled in an Art Therapy Summer School and later undertook Art Therapy Training. After qualifying as an Art Therapist she worked for 8 years in a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Clinic in the UK. Since moving to Ireland 9 years ago, Marianne has had a family, started a private practice, supervised, and lectured on the MA in Art Therapy. Local CAMHS, Child and Family Psychology Dept, Social Services Dept, GPs and the Adult Psychiatric Service commission. You can find out more about her on Honouring the Artist Within Why should we all use our creative power? Because there is nothing that makes people so generous, joyful, lively, bold and compassionate, so indifferent to fighting and the accumulation of objects and money. Brenda Ueland Creativity, curiosity and inspiration are qualities innate within every one of us. However, as we know, learned patterns and life experience can impact upon the flow of these vital energies. Within the safety of this workshop, we will gently explore ways in which we can all engage, encourage, support and enjoy our own inner artistry. Our palette will include colour and textures from the realms of the imagination, spirituality, fun, psychoanalysis, common sense and, of course, art therapy. 3
2 2 Julie Aldridge Julie has a background in Fine Art. In 1985 she was one of the first 14 students to qualify in Art Therapy at Sheffield University and has since attained her MA. She has worked in a variety of healthcare and educational settings in the UK and Ireland including the NHS, Social Services, Hospice and Voluntary sectors. Julie has taught on the MA Art Therapy CCAD - CIT for the last 12 years and currently contributes to the Certificate in Jungian Psychology with Art Therapy LIT. Since moving to Ireland in 1993, she has become increasingly interested in mythology, archetypal psychotherapy and narrative forms. She continues to paint and has a small private practice in conjunction with community based service providers. She has lived in Beara for almost 20 years together with her life partner and an independently minded rescue dog called Wess. Money as Archetype One of our most deeply individual relationships is that which we have with money. It often carries much of our unconscious and unresolved tension and can reveal hidden conditioning and insecurity, It can reflect difficult aspects of other close relationships including those with our parents, with the earth, with our bodies and with spirituality Kelvin Hall, Psychotherapist In recent times we have been assailed through the media with expressions such as austerity, downturn, negative equity and the fiscal cliff, all contributing to a collective atmosphere of doom and gloom. Such terms have resonance with well known psychological states such as depression, regression and neurosis. The preoccupation with austerity and financial deficit appears insurmountable as it negatively impacts individuals and society as a whole. This workshop aims to explore our relationship to money via creative means. As a learning community we may be challenged to re think our relationship to material resources both as individuals and in relation to the collective consciousness. We will look deeply into the nature of money from a Jungian perspective, as a symbol of human energy and exchange of value. By exploring the roots of our connection to financial supply, or the lack of it, we may reclaim a sense of our individual agency and empowerment, reconnecting with our individual potentials. Please attend the first session with an artefact or item which has held value to you personally but which you would be prepared to give away! 4
3 3 Suzie Cahn Suzie Cahn started out with a background in fine arts, sculpture and counselling. She qualified as an Art Therapist in New York in 1991 and has worked in a wide variety of settings: children in care, adult survivors of rape and sexual abuse, mental health, cancer, bereavement and hospice care. She was Head of Therapy Programme Evaluation with Áthas, a creative arts therapy service in Mountmellick, for people with disabilities and mental health problems. Suzie now works in private practice and has developed Eco-Psychology inspired Nature and Art Based workshops in Co Wicklow. Suzie has hosted workshops both here and abroad and is an occasional tutor on the Cork art therapy course, and at the Irish Hospice Foundation. She is guest lecturer for several university based programmes. Suzie was very involved in the development of Creative Arts Therapies in Ireland as founding member, and former chairperson of the Irish Association of Creative Arts Therapists now celebrating its 25th year. Resilience and Renewal This workshop focuses on using art expression along with nature mediation as a means of promoting and preserving mental health. Many people do not prioritize their own mental health or physical well-being, leading to illness, burnout, or stress which effect personal, work and community lives. Often it is only when illness actually threatens or crisis emerge, that help is sought, symptoms are treated or a cure found. In recent years, preventive medicine and the more eastern health philosophy of maintaining balance preventing the onset of illness has become common. However, a corresponding approach is not as developed for maintaining balance in mental/emotional health. This workshop has been created within the current context of Ireland where there are now multiple new stressors effecting people due to economic decline. It draws on concepts from eco-psychology and nature metaphors such as resilience and renewal. Portions of the workshop will take place in respectful silence with verbal integration sessions coming later in the sequence of days. It is hoped that participants will take away many practices to help them with maintaining their mental health, with a knock on positive impact on all aspects of their lives. 5
4 4 Janek Dubowski Janek Dubowski trained as an Art Therapist in the early 1970 s and following an initial career within a specialised NHS psychiatric hospital, he was awarded a PhD in Comparative Psychology for his pioneering research into the application of art therapy in the early 1980 s. He is also a trained Counsellor (Psychodynamic) and Psychotherapist (Integrative) as well as a Charted Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. Currently he holds a senior academic position at Roehampton University: London where he has developed the first Jungian based Art Psychotherapy Programme in the UK. The use of the Mandala or Sacred Circles in Art Therapy Analytical Art Psychotherapy is a Jungian based approach to the therapeutic application of art in which an attempt is made to integrate conscious and unconscious process through the symbolic process. The Mandala or Sacred Circle is considered to be a unifying symbol of the totality of self, of both the conscious and unconscious mind. In this workshop participants will be guided through the mandala process. By creating and sharing a personal mandala possibilities for self-exploration and creative growth through Art Therapy will be opened up. 6
