The University of Maryland Police serves a community of 37,631 undergraduate and graduate students, and another 13,081 faculty and staff members. 12,000 of those students live on the campus in Residence Halls. Located in the National Capital Region, the College Park campus boasts 263 buildings on 1250 acres of land. In 2010, University Police Officers responded to almost 75,000 calls in the service to the community both on and off campus. New Design for UMPD patrol vehicles this one is assigned to the K9 unit

2 UMPD Department Flag designed by members of the agency The University of Maryland Police Department was created in the late 1930 s, but was established as a law enforcement agency by an act of the State Legislature in University Police Officers have primary jurisdiction on the University, but also have concurrent jurisdiction in the City of College Park. Officers attend a 25 week-long police academy that is part of the department and fully certified by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions. The police academy has been in operation for almost 30 years now, training officers from various campuses, as well as law enforcement agencies in the region. 3 University Police Officers patrol the campus and the city in five patrol beats. They engage in community policing and work with the community to solve problems and protect the educational environment. Officers are trained in all aspects of law enforcement, and that includes active-shooter training. UMPD uses a Peace Keeper (left) and engages in active shooter exercises (right) The University of Maryland Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency made up of three bureaus: Police Services Bureau, Support Services Bureau, and Technology Services Bureau. Patrol officers make up the bulk of the department and are part of the Police Services Bureau. Here officers work 24/7/365 on six patrol shifts. Also a part of the Police Services Bureau is the Criminal Investigations Unit, the Strategic Enforcement Response Team (street crimes unit), crime prevention, police auxiliary, and canine. The Support Services Bureau consists of fiscal services, Training and Personnel Unit (which encompasses the police academy), Emergency Communications Center, Logistics, fleet management, and accreditation. The Technology Services Bureau includes the IT unit, Building Security Systems (BSS), the SOC, and the Records Unit. The newest addition to the department in 2012 was the addition of four police canines in the department s first canine unit. After an extensive selection and training program, the canine unit was created with dogs that are specially trained in explosive detection. With a large football stadium and basketball arena, the University of Maryland Police recognizes their homeland security mission to protect the campus community. Additionally, the College Park campus is host to many VIPs given its proximity to Washington DC.

What started as a small operation of only 12 cameras has steadily become a central location where over 450 cameras are monitored 24/7. The SOC has provided substantial assistance in identifying and apprehending criminals preying on the campus and

5 surrounding community for both the University Police and allied agencies. Employees of the SOC include both full- and part-time staff, many of which are students at the university. The Security Operation Center also serves as the back-up Emergency Communications Center In addition to the SOC, the University of Maryland Police has a Police Auxiliary Division which consists of about 70 Student Police Aides (SPAs) and four Police Aid Supervisors. Acting as the eyes and ears of the university police, the Police Auxiliary has served the campus community since its inception in SPAs are all students who work in a part time capacity. They are unarmed and non-sworn and carry UMPD radios. SPAs are briefed for operations on a football game day The University of Maryland Police participates in highway safety programs to keep the university and surrounding areas safe. UMPD has one of the highest DUI arrest rates in Prince Georges County, where it is located. Officers participate in

6 pedestrian safety and enforcement programs, aggressive driver enforcement programs, and alcohol enforcement and fake ID programs. This includes DUI Sobriety Checkpoints that are conducted about three times a year. Officers conduct DUI checkpoints on Baltimore Avenue (US Route 1), which divides the campus. The University of Maryland Police Honor Guard is a relatively recent program in the department, but has already been active throughout the state and the region. The Honor Guard has served at police funerals and various ceremonies at request. They have been active in providing escorts at Reagan National Airport in Washington DC during Police Week, where they join officers from around the country in escorting survivors through the airport as they for Police Week activities.
