2 INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME FOR BUSINESS MANAGEMENT OF PROJECTS Overview Paying particular and specific attention to the interface between business and project management during the planning phase of high-risk capital projects is essential to achieving success. There is abundant evidence that project owners do not adequately support the objectives of the project team responsible for the implementation of the project. The core focus of the International Programme for Business Management of Projects is therefore on what is termed front-end loading (FEL)/front-end planning (FEP) and on the importance of pre-planning when executing capital projects. The programme is presented by USB-ED s Transnet Centre for Business Management of Projects, in collaboration with the University College London s Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management, Cranfield University School of Management s International Centre for Programme Management (ICPM), and the IPA Institute. The complexity level of the programme is aligned with the South African National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level 8. Who should attend? If you are a senior executive or a senior project manager responsible for the performance and outcomes of capital projects in either a public, state-owned enterprise or in the private sector, you are eligible and may apply for this programme. No formal tertiary qualifications are required. Candidates must have relevant experience and must have held a senior or executive management position for at least two years. Experience of business management or demand management or project management in the capital project domain is however required. What will be required of you? Participants will be required to attend the entire programme. On the final day of the programme, participants will be required to deliver a presentation for evaluation and grading by a panel. Each participant s presentation must include his or her own goals that will be followed up later during the coaching process. The grading panel will include a selection of senior representatives from the three academic partners (Bartlett School at UCL, Cranfield and USB-ED) and the IPA Institute. Participants will also be required to submit an individual reflective essay for assessment three weeks after the international visit. What is your return on investment? As a programme participant you will receive exposure to executive business thinking via local and international practitioners and peers in the fields of business management, demand management and project management. Specific emphasis will be placed on business thinking and practices that will equip you to achieve your critical project goals in respect of cost, schedule and operability. USB-ED s Transnet Centre for Business Management of Projects will provide individual follow-up coaching three months and six months after the conclusion of the initial two-week programme to ensure that the learning and goals set at the end of the programme by each participant are indeed institutionalised in their own, respective organisations. 3 WHAT DOES IT COVER? Stellenbosch, South Africa Introduction by Dr Mias de Klerk Dr Mias de Klerk is the Chief Ethics Officer at a major global multinational organisation with more than employees. He has facilitated transformation workshops all over the world, including India, China, Germany, Canada, the UK and the USA. His qualifications include a PhD in Organisational Behaviour, a Master s Degree in Business Leadership (MBL) and a degree in Engineering. His areas of expertise include Business Ethics and Organisational Culture. Setting the softer scene by Prof Basil Leonard Prof Basil Leonard is an Associate Professor at the USB. He is also the Executive Director of the Leonard Leadership Group. His qualifications include a Master of Philosophy (Future Studies) and a Doctor of Theology. His areas of expertise include Leadership, Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and related areas such as Moral Intelligence. Business Management of Projects Willem Louw, director of USB-ED s Transnet Centre for Business Management of Projects, and MC Botha, academic head of the Centre, will lay the foundation for the programme by presenting the context within which capital projects are executed and by providing insights into the management of the front-end planning phase of projects so as to exert a significant positive influence over the risk profile of the organisation. London, England Managing the front-end of projects Dr Andrew Edkins, director of the Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management at the University College London, Professor Peter Morris, former head of the School, and other members of the School will share their experience in managing the front-end of projects as key to their success, with the emphasis on the crucial role of people. Dr Harvey Maylor will present his 7-C model which focuses on designing the organisation for excellence in delivering the business of projects. This breakthrough in thinking about organisational design is already helping organisations to improve the deployment of organisational strategy. About Cranfield School of Management Cranfield is a leading centre of expertise in the delivery of project, programme and change management. Industryfunding began as a partnership with Electronic Data Systems (later HP Enterprise Services) in Since then it has managed an extensive portfolio of research and development, working with its research partners to put the delivery of organisational strategy at the heart of the corporate agenda, through strategic portfolio and programme management. It has had a significant positive impact on the organisations with which it has worked. Their main collaborator, HP, has a new organisational approach to winning and delivering its project-based business, AdvantageHP, designed, developed and delivered with Cranfield. The Hague, Netherlands Gatekeeping for capital project governance As the use of the stage-gate process has spread, companies have correspondingly turned their attention to governance and gatekeeping. Representatives of Independent Project Analysis, Inc. (IPA) will present their latest thinking on gatekeeping for capital project governance. They will also deal with the fundamental question of having the discipline to follow the rules in the context of governance and high-risk capital projects. About the IPA Institute The IPA Institute, a division of Independent Project Analysis (IPA), offers education seminars for project professionals to further IPA s mission to improve capital productivity. The courses of the IPA Institute are derived from its extensive quantitative analysis and research of capital projects, linking statistically proven project management best practices to business value. Training courses are presented by IPA project and research analysts, who have extensive experience in evaluating capital projects and performing research on capital project issues. Their wide range of training offerings is delivered in multiple languages and in all regions of the world. NQF alignment The scope and presentation of this programme are aligned with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 8. Admission requirements No formal tertiary qualifications are required. Alumni Association Successful participants will automatically become part of the USB Alumni Association.
