18 Piotr Perski (Kalisz, Poland, 1971) BARCELONA-SAN FRANCISCO INLINE In his Barcelona San Francisco INLINE exposition at the Geras Tousignant Gallery, Piotr Perski (Kalisz, Poland, 1971) gives us his painted view of two well-known cities. The INLINE (ON LINE) in the title bears no reference to images in digital media or Internet, it is a metaphor. Being On-Line means being in touch, being connected with one another. The traveler creates lines, provides experiences and visions, if not new, then renewed. The line is what the traveler draws in his peregrinations. The assumption being that the experience of the viewer will perhaps be the line that will contribute to the rediscovery of the experience in everyday environments. Piotr does it through his medium, his art, the painting. Piotr Perski explores the connection between perception and art of the place, whose streets he roams. He contemplates the two cities, Barcelona on the Mediterranean and San Francisco on the Pacific, similar in the sense of both being open to the sea, from the artistic perspective (there are many historical and cultural connections), a relationship that the painter himself establishes and decides to project Inline. This is the vision he works on in San Francisco, the vision that is being presented to us by this traveler who has come a long way from a small inland town of Kalisz also one of the oldest Polish towns in Eastern Europe. We will see in his paintings buildings, skies and general views of the two cities, some of them very well-known but transformed through his eyes. It is not easy to reinterpret characteristic images and create a personal view. But Piotr Perski does it. He does it in two ways; firstly by persisting in the employment of the representation from nature, a XIXth century notion, which in spite of the passage of time is again considered to be innovative because it makes us think of the actual process of painting. And secondly, by limiting the variety of resources, which have, for centuries, been at the disposal of artists. These two are the means of expression in his artistic discourse.

19 The result is surprisingly fresh and original. The paintings seem sometimes innocuously simple but always impressively emotional because they convey the feeling of the moment. If the viewer allows himself to get involved in the game displayed by the artist, he or she will look again and will take part in the silent, sincere and passionate contest of the painter, who salvages the fleeting images and retains them not in freeze-frames, as it happens in photography on canvas. They are not, however, views of Barcelona and San Francisco, so often seen, so often photographed. They are personal impressions of Piotr Perski, which link those urban landscapes with a line, drawn by the artist. His media: the format, the selected point of viewing, the line of the horizon, the chromatic range, the brushstroke (yes, the trace left by the brush) and the pictorial representation of light. INLINE with Piotr Perski we are discovering the cities through their formats: landscapes are reduced to the limit, some becoming extremely elongated, extremely vertical or square, very much out-of-proportion, and are lit with the elusive illumination that marks the lights and shadows and turns them into dense patches of color of infinite hues that predominate general views. The concentration of buildings. Sometimes buildings occupy a major part of the canvas and the artist finds pleasure in painting their piled up view when he looks at the characteristic layout of streets: sometimes straight, sometimes labyrinthine, sometimes in deep perspective in their descent towards the sea, and sometimes ascending the hills both cities are situated on. Sometimes they are barely visible, drawn with a fine stroke under a layer of chromatic range, which, even though consisting of the whites, grays, blues, greens and siennas creates shades that maintain their shapes. Vast skies and cloud formations, to some highly improbable, nevertheless existing one can rediscover, following the line. Proportion and disproportion. And always a surprising lack of moderation in the chromatic range, from yellow to violent red, pink streaked with gold and orange all of them the mellow colors of the sunset. The sea and the sky occasionally narrow masses of oppressive, leaden color are painted in dazzling, vibrating turquoise, cobalt blue, indigo and white. The sea mist, this atmospheric phenomenon so characteristic of both cities and so common may put a painter to some inconvenience but Piotr does not ignore it. By ignoring that feature of the port of Barcelona or the San Francisco Bay it would seem impossible to paint the diffuse mass the miniscule particles that often shroud the landscape but Piotr Perski achieves it. The art and the artistic work of Piotr Perski is a possibility and a good pretext to escape the boredom of everyday sights.

20 More about Piotr Perski The critics need to find certain individual qualities by which they like to identify artists. It can be said about Piotr Perski that he is a painter of the skies of Barcelona ever since he settled there in 1998 and what he has achieved in all these years justifies such denomination. His paintings, which have been exposed in many important galleries of the city, like Sala Parés and Jordi Barnadas and in countries like the United States, Cyprus, Poland and Germany are a proof of the painter s particular interest in the subject. He has received grants from: MAEE, Mondariz Wellness Foundation, Talens, and Institute Ramon Llull. In his desire to discover new ways of looking at landscapes in Spain and particularly in Barcelona he will paint a subject that has been done a dozen times but now it will have this special stamp of his personal experience. When Piotr Perski works with urban landscapes, interiors, everyday objects and flowers he converts painting from nature into the experience of vital importance, and its pictorial expression is more revealing than might be assumed from the first superficial look. Particularly in the contemporary context where everything has been done by means of all available resources, his work, modest in formats, media and pictorial techniques restores this other dimension perhaps lost, perhaps forgotten or underrated of the magic of symbolic representation, one that converts a canvas or painted wood into an exciting experience. But Piotr Perski explores other means of creative expression in his work. When he makes drawings in big formats, a daring task both in conception and realization, on fragile paper, with ephemereal materials, doomed to be lost for ever, he leaves us a message: any solid matter fades away in the air, just like words fade away but artistic creation always leaves a mark. The interest of the artist in these themes can also be found in the facets of his work close to what the critics like to call conceptual projects although even here he maintains the same poetical line. He is planning several artistic performances in which he will be experimenting with different ideas and different media. To this category belongs his project to save the inscriptions on the stone slabs in the cloister of the Cathedral, Stones In the first phase of the project the artist intends to reproduce the inscriptions on the stone floor of the cloister by means of the technique of direct prints (frottage) and to investigate their original meaning. As stated by the artist: Stones interest me from the aesthetical point of view, their sophisticated compositions and historical importance. The project I am presenting here closes another stage of my work I am trying to restore some of the memory of the stones in the cloister in the Cathedral. I watch with despair as many stone plaques on the floor are being covered with cement, are lost forever, only to make it easier for the tourists to visit the grounds of the Cathedral. Is it impossible to recover at least part of the memory of the experience that fades away with time? I must do something, at least leave the proof of the lost meaning of their traces.
