3 NetIQ08: Operations Center The Best IT Management Tool in the World Labs Last Updated: 03/29/2012 Lab 1: Adapters In this lab you learn how to 1.1 Integrate data from an adapter 1.1 Integrate Data from an Adapter This exercise will teach you about how the events from an adapter can create an element hierarchy. We will be using a small Data Center Hierarchy based on an ecommerce business service scenario. 1 Power on the NOC5 VM from VMware Workstation 2 Press CTRL+ALT+INS to bring up the Windows authentication dialog 3 Login using the following credentials Name: administrator Password: novell 4 Launch Internet Explorer 5 Enter the URL Page 1

4 6 You should see the Operations Center dialog box 7 Select the Login link Note: If you get a dialog box that the Operations Center server is not available just wait 8 Login to Operations Cetner using the following credentials Name: admin Password: formula 9 On the left you will see the Explorer pane which list the elements in the tree 10 The right pane displays information about the element and/or element children depending upon which tab at the bottom that you select 11 In the Explorer pane create a Universal Adapter for the ecommerce Service 11.1 Right-click Enterprise > Administration > Adapters 11.2 Choose Create Adapter form the drop-down menu 11.3 Select NOC Universal Adapter from the adapter choices 11.4 Enter ecommerce Events for the name 11.5 Change the EventListenPort to Change the HierarchyFile to C:\NovellOperationsCenter\NOC\Demodata\DataCentersHierarchy.xml 11.7 Uncheck Start Adapter Automatically 11.8 Click Create 11.9 Click Start to start the adapter Click Close to close the dialog 12 Expand Enterprise > Elements > ecommerce Events and note the Data Centers object that was created Page 2

5 Note: This object was created by a tag in the hierarchy file and is used to add upper level business structure to your services tree 13 Double-click C:\NovellOperationsCenter\NOC\Demodata\DataCenters.bat to run the file and generate events that will be used to create objects and set their state 14 Examine the structure under Enterprise > Elements > ecommerce Events > Data Centers and you should now have regions, data centers and both web and database servers for each data center Note: The Network view makes it easier to see the entire structure Note: The colors indicate severity levels for the events that generated the objects 15 Now examine the ecommerce server elements to see the properties that were added to the objects from the adapter event stream 15.1 Right-click on Enterprise > Elements > ecommerce Events > Data Centers > South West > California > Web Select Properties from the menu 15.3 Select Properties from the Properties menu and note the event properties 15.4 Check C:\NovellOperationsCenter\NOC\demodata\DataCenters.rl to see the data source Page 3

6 Lab 2: Service Models In this section, you learn how to use Service Configuration Manager to create a service model and to correlate the data from two adapters into one service model. We will use the existing Data Centers hierarchy from the Events adapterand the Remedy Trouble Tickets adapter. In this lab you will learn how to 1. Use Service Configuration Manager to create a Service Model 2. Add the data from a second adapter to the Service Model 2.1 Use Service Configuration Manager to create a Service Model This exercise will show you how to create a Service Model using Service Configuration Manager 1 Make sure that the ecommerce Events adapter is running and that you have generated events using DataCenters.bat 2 Right-click on Enterprise > Services > Service Models 3 Select Add Element from the drop-down menu 4 Enter the name ecommerce Service 5 Check the box for Launch service configuration editor after element creation 6 Click Create 7 Click the Contact menu choice 8 Enter your contact information Page 4

7 9 Click Apply 10 Click Finish 11 Answer Yes to the dialog box question: Do you want to create a new definition? 12 Enter ecommerce Service as the definition name 13 For the Reconciliation Policy select Delete-Before-Execute from the pull-down choices 14 Click Create Structure 15 For the Structure Root browse to and select Enterprise > Elements > ecommerce Events 16 Click OK to continue 17 Expand Modeling Policies 18 Select Generation in the left pane 19 Check the box for Create State Relationship Link to Structure Elements 20 Check Copy properties from structure elements 21 Click Save 22 Click Generate 23 Click OK on the dialog box telling you the views have been generated Page 5

8 24 Close the Service Configuration dialog window 25 Explore the Service Model you created under Enterprise > Services > Service Models > ecommerce Service 26 In the ecommerce Service Model right-click Data Centers > EMEA > London > Database5 27 Select Properties from the menu 28 Expand Correlated > ecommerce Events > Database5 29 Select Properties Note: You have access to the properties from the events from that adapter 30 Close the Properties dialog box 2.2 Add data from a second adapter to the Service Model This exercise will introduce you to the idea of correlating the data from two different data streams to provide one place to find what you need. The Remedy Trouble Tickets adapter will provide a data stream of trouble tickets that will be correlated with the ecommerce Events elements based on matching a geographic field in both data streams. We want those tickets to only appear at the Region level. First, lets determine the field in the Remedy Tickets that will be used to correlate the trouble tickets into the correct elements in the Data Center Hierarchy 1 Right-click Enterprise > Administration > Adapters > Remedy Trouble Tickets 2 Click on Start Adapter from the drop-down menu Page 6

9 3 Double-click C:\NovellOperationsCenter\NOC\demodata\remedy.bat 4 Check that you now have elements with state under Enterprise > Elements > Remedy Trouble Tickets 5 Go to Enterprise > Elements > Remedy Trouble Tickets > Geography and note that the geographic regions are North East, South West and EMEA Next, we will add the Remedy Trouble Tickets adapter as a source of data for our ecommerce Service Model 6 Right-click on Enterprise > Services > Service Models > ecommerce Service 7 Select Rename from the drop-down menu 8 Change the name to ecommerce Service with Trouble Tickets 9 Click Finish 10 Right-click on Enterprise > Services > Service Models > ecommerce Service with Trouble Tickets 11 Select Service Configuration > Edit from the drop-down menus 12 In the Definition Navigator right-click on Sources 13 Click on Add Source 14 For the Source Root browse to and select Enterprise > Elements > Remedy Trouble Tickets 15 Click OK Page 7

10 16 Click Save 17 Click Generate 18 Click OK in the The Views have been generated dialog box 19 Close the Service Configuration dialog 20 Select the South West Region in the ecommerce Service with Trouble Tickets service model 21 Select the Alarms tab at the bottom 22 You should see alarms from both the ecommerce Service adapter and the Remedy Trouble Tickets adapter 23 Check the other regions Question: Why do you not see Remedy alarms for the Mid-West region? Answer: It is not a valid geography for the Remedy Trouble Ticket events so there is nothing to match them against in the ecommerce Events structure Page 8

11 Lab 3: Layout Views and Monitoring In this section, you learn how to: 3.1 Create a Layout View 3.2 Make a Visio Diagram Come Alive 3.3 Monitor with the Summary View 3.4 Show Root Cause and Impacted Elements 3.1 Create a Layout View This exercise will introduce you to the basic editing features found in the Layout view. In the Edit view you have access to a full set of drawing tools that function just like they do in other drawing products Start by clearing the drawing area to get ready for a custom drawing 1 Right-click on Enterprise > Services > Service Models in the Explorer pane 2 Select Add Element from the menu 3 Enter Views for the title 4 Click Finish 5 Right-click on Enterprise > Services > Service Models > Views 6 Select Add Element from the menu 7 Enter the name EMEA Data Centers supporting ecommerce 8 Click Finish Page 9

12 9 Click on Enterprise > Services > Service Models > Views > EMEA Data Centers supporting ecommerce 10 Click on the Layout view choice at the bottom 11 Clear the drawing area by right-clicking the background of the drawing in the viewing area and selecting New Drawing from the drop-down menu Add a title for the drawing 12 Add a title for the new drawing by selecting the Text icon in the bottom tool bar 13 Click somewhere on the blank screen and an entry box should pop-up 14 Enter the text EMEA Data Centers supporting ecommerce 15 Click OK and the text will appear on the screen 16 Note the palette and information box that appears Add the icons you want in the drawing to the work area 17 Drag the Enterprise > Services > Service Models > ecommerce Service with Trouble Tickets > Data Centers > EMEA > London element from the Explorer pane to the drawing area, putting it under the title in the Layout view 18 Select Add to Drawing Only from the pop-up dialog box 19 Drag the Web5 element in the Explorer pane to the drawing area putting it to the right of London 20 Select Add to Drawing Only from the pop-up dialog box Page 10

13 21 Drag the Database5 element in the Explorer pane to the drawing area putting it to the right of Web5 22 Select Add to Drawing Only from the pop-up dialog box Now lets change the icons for the servers to show them as servers visually 23 In the Navigator area in the lower left select the Graphics tab 24 Using the Categories drop-down scroll down to Nodes > Technology > Servers 25 Click on Servers 26 Scroll though the icons to find one you like 27 Drag that icon over the Web5 server and let it go 28 Select Change node style for this node only from the pop-up menu 29 Repeat for Database5 Create arrows to tie the objects together 30 Click the line icon at the bottom 31 Draw a line down from London so that it ends on Web5 32 Click on the line and then on the palette on the right click on the arrow icon to add an arrow head to the line pointing from Web5 to London 33 Now add bi-directional flow lines between the Web5 and Database5 Servers 34 Continue to edit the drawing as you might want to see it 35 Click on one of the element icons, for example London Page 11

14 36 Then shift-click the rest, including the lines and the text header 37 Right-click the London icon and select Group from the drop-down menu 38 Now click on an item in the group and drag the it around the screen and note that all items in the group move with it 39 In order to edit an item in the group first select the group by clicking on it and you will get a dashed line around all the items in the group 40 Right-click and select Change Group from the drop-down menu 41 Click on the individual item you want to change 42 When done, right-click and select Save Group from the drop-down menu 3.2 Make a Visio Diagram Come Alive Now lets create an IT view of the server rack and the location of the EMEA ecommerce servers to make it easier to find them when needed 1 Right-click on Enterprise > Services > Service Models > Views 2 Select Add Element from the menu 3 Enter the name London ecommerce Servers Rack 4 Click on Finish 5 Click on Service Models > Views > London ecommerce Servers Rack 6 Click in the blank space and select New Drawing from the menu 7 From the top menu select File > Open Page 12

15 8 Browse to C:\ClassFiles\Graphics 9 Select visiorack.svg 10 Click Open 11 Click Yes to the question Do you want to import C:\ClassFiles\Graphics\visiorack.svg? 12 In the Tools area at the bottom, select the third button from the left to flatten the drawing 13 Click on one of the servers in the rack to make it active 14 Drag and drop the Database5 server from ecommerce Service with Trouble Tickets > Data Centers > EMEA > London to a server in the rack 15 Drag and drop the Web5 server from ecommerce Service with Trouble Tickets > Data Centers > EMEA > London to a server in the rack 16 Select Switch to View Mode under the drawing 17 Answer Yes to the dialog The Drawing has been changed 18 Note how the servers are now linked to the vision diagram 19 Move the mouse over the servers in the rack and note the tooltips 3.3 Monitor with the Summary View This exercise will show you how to sort and filter alarms in the summary view 1. Click on Enterprise > Services > Service Models > ecommerce Service with Trouble Tickets in the Explorer pane 2. Click on the Alarms tab at the bottom 3. Note that the bottom status bar displays the total number of elements and the number currently selected Page 13

16 4. Try clicking on different columns to sort the alarms based on that column 5. Note that in the top toolbar the number of alarms for each condition are displayed next to the condition color 6. You can use the condition color icons to display or hide alarms based on the conditions or severity level so try clicking on them to see what happens 3.4 Show Root Cause and Impacted Elements This exercise will show you how to identify the root cause of a service failure as well as the impact of an element's failure 1. Right-click on Enterprise > Service > Service Models > ecommerce Service with Trouble Tickets > Data Centers > South West 2. Select Show Root Cause from the pop-up menu 3. Right-click on Enterprise > Services > Service Models > ecommerce Service with Trouble Tickets > Data Centers > South West > California > Database2 4. Select Show Impacted from the pop-up menu Note: You can identify which business services would be impacted by a problem with this element 5. Close the Console 6. Close Internet Explorer Page 14

17 Lab 4: Build Dashboard Web Pages In this section, you learn how to build web based dashboard pages so many users can access Operations Center data without a special client: 4.1 Add Operations Center Portlets to Web Pages 1. Select Start > All Programs > Novell Operations Center > Dashboard > Start Dashboard 2. Start Internet Explorer 3. Enter the URL of Note: This will takes a minute or two 4. For the Screen name enter Admin 5. For the Password enter formula 6. Click the Sign-in button 7. Move the cursor to the triangle symbol in the upper right next to Welcome Admin 8. From the drop down menu select My Places > ecommerce Exec > Private Pages 9. Make sure Home page is selected on the left side 10. Move the cursor to the triangle symbol in the upper right next to Welcome Admin 11. Select Add Application from the drop-down menu 12. Expand the Operations Center selection in the pull-down menu Note: These are the portlets that pull data from the Operations Center server. The other menu selections are the ones shipped with LifeRay Page 15

18 13. Add the Navigation portlet 14. Add the Summary portlet 15. Add the Layout portlet 16. Add the Element Properties portlet Note: All the portlets are lined up on the left but we need to arrange them for better viewing 17. Move the cursor to the triangle symbol in the upper right next to Welcome Admin 18. Select Layout Template from the drop-down menu and note that the current template uses 2 columns with a 30/70 distribution 19. Close the Layout window We will put the Element Properties and Navigation portlets in the right side since there is more space to work with which makes the data easier to see 20. Drag the Element Properties portlet to the right using the blue border at the top 21. Drag the Navigation portlet to the right 22. Drag the Summary portlet to the right side 23. Examine Layout portlet and note that not much is shown and that you need to install SVG ir Flash 24. Click on Please click on this link to install it Note: The message in the portlet means that you do not have the graphics capability to display the content so you will have to install SVG which comes with Dashboard installation 25. In the File Download Security Warning dialog box. click on Run 26. In the dialog box Do you want to run this software select Run 27. In the Layout portlet select Starting Point Page 16

19 28. For the Software License Agreement select Accept Note: You should now see the graphics in the Layout View just like in the Console 29. In the Navigation portlet click on the Enterprise > Services > Service Models > ecommerce Service with Trouble Tickets > Data Centers > EMEA 30. Note that all the other portlets change to show that element 31. In the Summary portlet click on the left icon ( ) and select Preferences 32. Select the Navigate tab 33. Expand Enterprise. Services > Service Models 34. Select ecommerce Service with Trouble Tickets 35. Click on Save with this as the New Starting Point 36. Select Return to Full Page 37. You should see a nice pie chart in the summary portlet 38. If we want to narrow down what we are seeing in the Layout and Summary portlets we can select Data Centers > EMEA in the Navigation portlet 39. Also try clicking on elements in the Layout portlet and note that this does not change what we see in the other portlets like it does when we do this in the Navigation portlet Page 17
