2 The Arts Service Richmond upon Thames Arts Service and Orleans House Gallery provide arts for everyone, including exhibitions in three galleries, a diverse range of arts festivals, an award-winning family friendly education provision for all ages as well as partnership programmes with a wide range of cultural organisations. This year marks the submission of our stage 2 bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for our Transforming Orleans House project. The project will restore the architecturally important James Gibbs-designed Octagon Room and make the Richmond upon Thames Borough Art Collection more accessible for everyone to enjoy through a new Study Room display and increased interpretation around the site. Physical access will also be improved through a new entrance and lift access to the upper floors, including a new training room, which will provide education, training and support for the community. This ambitious project will create a heritage hub for West London. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this project in various ways, including the consultation process, fundraising events and individual donations. We are still fundraising, so would welcome your donation. Local artists and groups are also raising funds towards the project with the Richmond Views exhibition, which runs at Orleans House Gallery from February until May. This year, England hosts the Rugby World Cup at Twickenham Stadium. This is being celebrated throughout the borough by a variety of events including the Festival of Rugby - performances and arts festivals celebrating the Rugby World Cup. Orleans House Galley will be hosting the Team Spirit exhibition from June to November, which explores the history of sports in the borough, and rugby will inspire our annual carnival festival in June. From January, we will be piloting extended opening hours from 10.00am-5.00pm from Tuesday to Sunday - so you will have greater opportunities to visit, engage and explore! 4 EXHIBITIONS Orleans House Gallery, Twickenham Panufnik s Twickenham Until 1 February Polish-born composer Sir Andrzej Panufnik spent the second half of his life in Twickenham, living and working just a few metres from Orleans House Gallery. In extreme contrast to the terrifying wartime oppression he faced in his native Poland, Twickenham s tranquil surroundings and rich history finally gave Panufnik inspiration and a perfect climate for his powerful creativity. To mark the centenary of one of the world s most important 20th century composers, this fascinating exhibition, which includes rare photographs, manuscripts and artefacts, explores Panufnik s Twickenham: from the writings of Alexander Pope to the role of the Thames, trees and nature in his work, as well as revealing intriguing parallels to his ancestral home. Richmond Views 7 February - 31 May For centuries, the breathtaking views of Richmond upon Thames have inspired artists and visitors alike contributing, in the eighteenth century, to a new way of perceiving beauty in the landscape. This special open exhibition will fundraise for the ambitious Transforming Orleans House project as it showcases the work of contemporary artists coming together in celebration of the borough s natural beauty. Richmond Views will explore the borough s landscapes, urban environment, buildings and inhabitants in a variety of media and styles. Team Spirit: Rugby, Rowing and Beyond 6 June - 8 November 2015 brings the Rugby World Cup to England and the home of rugby since 1907, Twickenham. Team sports have been prevalent in the borough for more than 150 years and are still a big part of the local scene today. This energetic exhibition looks at the local, national, and international history of cricket, rowing, rugby and much more through the display of Borough Art Collection works, sporting objects, and personal stories. Part of Richmond s Festival of Rugby. A Discerning Eye: Highlights of the Henry Boxer Collection 14 November - 7 February 2016 This exhibition showcases an extraordinary array of artistic gems from Henry Boxer s personal and gallery collection, amassed over a 45-year period. Many diverse, intense, unusual and gifted artists are featured. These include the Edwardian portrayer of mad cats, Louis Wain, the mediumistic Madge Gill, the visionary depicter of resurrections, Donald Pass, savant artists Stephen Wiltshire and George Widener, occultist Austin Spare, illustrator/author, Mervyn Peake, and Berlin Dadaist George Grosz. All of the artists have fascinating and compelling biographies that have shaped their art, but it is thanks to Henry Boxer s enduring passion and uniquely discerning eye that this collection has been brought together and shown for the first time in its entirety at Orleans House Gallery.

5 EXHIBITIONS Stables Gallery, Twickenham Rudi Patterson: Visions of My Island in the Sun 29 January - 22 March I m inspired by natural beauty and harmony; I love to paint. Rudi was the last of generations of colonial Jamaicans brought up to see England as home - West London was the place for him - and after moving here in the Fifties it spurred his creativity, firstly as a ground-breaking model and successful stage and screen actor, then every day for 45 years as an artist in paint and pottery. You will see works pulsating with vibrant colour, landscapes cascading with tropical plants, wood, water, sea, still lifes, portraits of West Indian village life, of powerful women and abstracts. All created from a series of tiny West London flats. When he died in Notting Hill aged 79 in 2013, canvases were everywhere, propped and stacked in every room, dozens deep. Fat portfolios bursting with an astonishingly varied set of images; and pots, their glazes sometimes obscured with a layer of dust. This exhibition, curated by the heritage expert and broadcaster Wesley Kerr, is the culmination in a series of retrospectives from one of Britain s most significant black artists. A Guest in Turner s House 26 March - 24 May Katie Sollohub has been artist-in-residence at nearby Turner s House in Twickenham since May Originally invited to make drawings and paintings of the house before it is restored, Katie has fallen in love with the house (designed and built by J.M.W. Turner in 1813), and her work has brought its bare walls alive over the past year. This exhibition will show final work from this exciting project, much of it done in situ. The residency has been supported by Turner s House Trust and Seawhite of Brighton, and was made possible with the help of a generous grant from Arts Council England. Beep Beep! Trains, Planes and Automobiles 28 May - 30 August Beep Beep! is the 5th Artplay exhibition. An interactive exhibition created by children and families for children and families. Come and explore, play and learn in our colourful collection of noisy transport treats! Good Impressions: The Art of the Printmaker 3 September - 29 November Richmond Printmakers are a long established group who are always keen to make Good Impressions. There are twenty-three artists who imaginatively use a wide variety of printmaking techniques to achieve their extremely varied artworks. The exhibition shows the printmakers techniques of etching, screen printing, lithography, linocutting, mono printing and collagraphs. A chance to compare the delicacy of an etching to the bold images of a linocut. Sandra Beccarelli: Beyond the Surface of Seeing 3 December - 31 January 2016 Sandra Beccarelli s abstract works explore themes around movement and change, light and dark, order and chaos. Her paintings, drawings and mixed media works investigate the essence of a feeling, referring to the landscape as a starting point. As artist in residence, Sandra invites you into her studio, to take a glimpse at her thought processes and inspirations, giving an opportunity to see how abstract works can develop from a more poetic way of thinking.

6 EXHIBITIONS RIVERSIDE Gallery, RICHMOND Artists Books Until 14 February To coincide with the annual literature festival, this exhibition showcases contemporary artists books artwork in book form from unique examples to limited editions works. Metamorphosis open 21 February - 16 May The themes of transformation and change have attracted artists for centuries. This contemporary open exhibition explores this enduring theme through a variety of media and approaches. Drawing Closer to the Masters 23 May - 1 August The Old Masters seemed to have drawing skills that far exceed those of today s artists however they weren t superhuman; they simply had thorough training in techniques that have now been largely abandoned. Yet in a small church hall in Ham a group of artists meets every week to humbly study these skills of old and to try and bring back a lost tradition. In this exhibition Academic Art Class led by Anna Tikhomirova since 2009 is showcasing their efforts. The Lie of the Land 8 August - 26 September This is a touring exhibition, curated by Jane Williams, of treasures from the fictitious village museum of Leasingstede, an idiosyncratic cultural outpost, far west of Stonehenge. Recently a cache of artefacts was discovered behind a pile of old tyres in the East Outhouse. Among the curiosities and barely identifiable tools, there is evidence of historical links between Leasingstede Museum and Richmond. Oh, and there s a shiny coin hoard. From the Pages of a Book: Literary Art open 3 October - 5 December To coincide with the annual Richmond upon Thames Literature Festival, this open exhibition celebrates the connection between literature and art through a variety of paintings and illustrations based on poetry and novels. Haydon Williams: The Surgeon s Scalpel - observed and imagined landscapes 12 December - 27 February 2016 The scalpel is the most precise drawing tool. The line dividing colours, defining shapes, creating forms and motifs is rendered invisible by the skill and dexterity of the artist s hands. Formerly a designer, Haydon Williams now creates artworks which combine the applied and fine art worlds. Sharply defined structures and layered surfaces in contrast with freer, painterly treatments create surreal and surprise elements. The observed and imagined fuse together, inspired by landscape locations.
