6 The country of Douarnenez, located in one of the most beautiful bays in Europe, in the department of Finistère (Pen Ar Bed), is famous for its maritime and rural landscapes. Douarnenez, the city of 3 ports The fishing port, or Rosmeur port, was formerly the first sardine port and is nowadays active with its fish auction and its port facilities. With its little alleys and its stairs bordering the sea, it is a picturesque district, full of charm and authenticity that reminds us the sardine soul of Brittany. The Port-Rhu, a centre of the coastal navigation of the 19 th century, combines on its banks a large number of activities related to the maritime heritage. The wet dock of the Port-Rhu allows the boats to make a stopover in the heart of the port museum and at the foot of the city centre. The marina of Tréboul is nestled behind the Tristan Island and is all-weather accessible and all year long, in daylight as well as at night. This well sheltered harbour benefits from the proximity of the businesses, the port facilities and the nautical activities. 6

13 ARRECIFE Located at the north-eastern end of the Canaries archipelago, at a distance of 1000 km of the Iberian Peninsula and 140 km of the African costs, Lanzarote is characterized by a large amount of volcanoes and a fantastic petrified field of lava, called las Montañas del Fuego. Lanzarote is the easternmost island of the Canary Islands and has an area of 845 km². It has wonderful sandy stretches in the South and a hinterland with prickly pears. Arrecife Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote, is the administrative and commercial centre of the island. It is home to over half the population of the island. It takes its name from the collection of reefs (arrecifes), islets and small volcanic rocks which stand off its coastline and hinder access and landing. Once inside the town its marine status is clearly reflected in its streets and old quarter. One of the most frequently visited tourist attractions is the Charco de San Ginés, a sort of lake formed by the entrance of sea water and surrounded by small fishermen houses, beside was built the former hermitage of San Ginés. On the seaward side, the beaches are amazing and there are high quality nautical facilities. 13

14 Lanzarote - Climate The holiday period can be enjoyed anytime of the year, with a temperature of 22 C and more than 3000 hours of sunlight per year. As the annual rainfall doesn t exceed 140 mm (similar conditions in the desert), the lack of water has always been the most important issue in the island. Sea water temperature varies from 17 C in March and April to 22 C in September and November. 14

20 Guadeloupe Put on the bow of Lesser Antilles, Guadeloupe remains, seen by plane, the vastest and the most beautiful island in the archipelago. It is at the same time beaten by the Atlantic Ocean and rocked by the Caribbean Sea. Guadeloupe is in reality a group of several islands: Karukera, the main island which has the shape of a curious and gigantic butterfly, and its annexes: The Saints, Marie-Galante and La Desirade. Climate A lot of sun, rain and wind, tepid dusks and pleasant nights: life is enjoyable in the West Indies. The sun is strong. The temperature of the sea can overtake 29 C from July to October and nevergoes below 24 C during the dry season. However, coolness exists in the heights. In climbing to the top of the Soufrière, you will discover several climatic floors, each one with specific vegetation. The top of the volcano is beaten by the winds and can be chilly. At the summit, the moisture condenses and forms clouds which water the plains. 20

21 Guadeloupe Weather (2 nd part) The night fall early: all year long, the sun rises between 5am and 6am and it sets between 5.30pm and 6.30pm. There is almost no twilight; the sun disappears on the West like an enormous red ball swallowed by the sea. There are 2 seasons in Guadeloupe: From December to April, the dry season, is the most pleasant season. It is the high season. The temperatures are around 27 C, the weather remains ideal in spite of some storm rainfalls. From July to October, it is the low season also called the wintering. The air is heavy (30 C), even suffocating when the trade winds, fortunately frequent, don t refresh the atmosphere. Afternoons are rainy. There are fewer tourists and the prices in the hotels are more reasonable. If you are planning to travel to the West Indies during the wintering season, know that the oriental coast is more watered that the western coast. Nevertheless, you can have a relative drought in summer and frequent rains in winter. Moreover, the presence of microclimates can give a beautiful weather in the North or in Saint François whereas it is raining in Pointe à Pitre. May, June and November are pleasant months because there are not too warm, not too expensive and less visited than the other months. Besides, May and June are favourable months to discover Guadeloupe with a lot of flowers. 21

22 Entry formalities Guadeloupe is a French department; a national identity card is enough for European citizens. A valid passport can be necessary to go to the neighbouring islands and, in this case, you must have in principle a return or onward ticket. For Switzerland citizens: valid passport For Canadian citizens: ID card is enough for a stay of 3 months or less. Otherwise, a valid passport is necessary. Customs: Be careful, controls are frequent especially for people who come back from territories such as St Marteen or St Barthelemy (be careful with cameras or other electronic devices). The main French banks are present in Guadeloupe; Travelers cheques: not always accepted they are open from Monday to Friday, 8am 4pm. Official currency: Euro Holiday vouchers: sometimes accepted, think about Cheques are not always accepted asking when you book. Credit cards: Credit cards are accepted in almost all the shops, excepted in some small restaurants, hotels and shops. ATM: Numerous and no commission (with French card). Nevertheless, be careful when you are planning to go the islands of Guadeloupe and at the SHOP-OPENING HOURS Shops are generally open from 8am to 12am and to 2pm to 6pm. closed on Saturday afternoon, Sunday, Bank holiday, and sometimes Wednesday afternoon. 23

25 Catering The better alternative is to find a restaurant which is not a traditional restaurant where the prices are often quite expensive and the service is slow, but there are some exceptions. In a restaurant, a main course costs at least The most economical alternative is to buy food in a supermarket and to cook in your apartment you rented. Otherwise, you can buy sandwiches on the beach with small sellers or in snacks. There are also the famous lolos which are small local restaurants where you can eat well for Everyday consumer gods are in general more expensive than in mainland France (excepted perfumes and rum), and especially dairy products and meat. 25

26 TRANSPORT Car rental Car rental is the best option to discover Guadeloupe, in particular if you travel with friends or relatives. Be careful, during the high season, it is recommended to book a car in advance. There are a lot of car rental agencies. The prices start at 40 per day in low season, with unlimited kilometers. Think about extra fees at the airport (20-25 ) in some agencies. In addition to classic agencies, some private individuals rent their cars. Even basic cars are equipped with conditioning air and, if possible, choose a car quite high. Petrol is a bit more expensive than in France but the prices are the same everywhere in the island. Avoid parking your car in dark areas in order to avoid vandalism. And never park your car under a coconut tree! 26

27 Transport (2 nd part) Roads Guadeloupe is one of the most dangerous department regarding to the road accidents. Knowing the local habits can be useful. Indeed, in spite of their calm disposition, Caribbean people get transformed when they are driving. Moreover, you must be careful with the surprises of the road network: you may see a two way road which becomes a one way road in a curve, some mountain roads are very narrow and there is room only for one car Traffic signs are rare and the roads are in poor conditions. Nevertheless, the car remains the best mean of transport to discover Guadeloupe. Drive slowly and pay attention to the other vehicles. Think also about traffic congestion when you plan your journey. 27

If you buy the last tickets you may not have a seat for the journey, or at the back of the boat, which is less comfortable. Even of the weather seems good, the sea is often rough when you move away from the coasts. And if you see some Antillean people wearing a k-way, don t smile; even if the sun is up, you will understand why when a rainfall is coming! 28

29 Air connections Air Caraïbes offers regular connections with some Antilles islands, but nowadays there is no flight anymore to islands of the Guadeloupe archipelago (Marie Galante, The Saints and La Desirade) Transatlantic connections: Air Canada, Air France, American Airlines, Corsair, Air Caraïbes come to Guadeloupe Inter-island connections: Air Caraïbes, Air Antilles Express and Liat offer connections between Guadeloupe islands and other Caribbean islands.
