4 Principal s Report Welcome! Welcome to the Primary Campus of Nunawading Christian College - a special place of which I, as Principal, am very proud. It is a place where we value, encourage challenge, and nurture our students as unique individuals. It is a place where we emphasize the development of the whole person - in other words, the social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual wellbeing of our children. And even though our College has achieved high academic standards, I believe that education should always provide more than academic achievement. It should always encourage the development of healthy self esteem, personal respect, a sense of responsibility, positive attitudes, caring relationships and service to others. And this is what we strive for at Nunawading Christian College. Our College is a Christian school where professional and committed Christian teachers encourage every student to make a special place for God in their life. We weave Christian values into our curriculum in order to encourage respect for self, others and the community. Our motto is Nothing Without God and it is important for us to provide our students with a solid foundation on which they can build their futures has again been a very happy, busy and progressive year for me, and the support from our parents, students, staff and the community family, has been tremendously appreciated. A big thank you to everyone. Our staff, go beyond the call of duty. I commend them for their wonderful dedication, their support, enthusiastic teaching, care for our students and their excellent programs of work. I would like to touch on a few aspects of School life that have excited me during Some of these aspects will be elaborated on again in Section 3 of the report. Enrolments I was delighted to see student enrolment in 2007 increase to 181 students. This places us at capacity and ready for the two new portable classrooms arriving now in A tremendous thrill in 2007 was to receive two Government funding grants from the Howard Government, for small school projects. We were the recipients of $146,000 for: Yr 2004 Yr 2005 Yr 2006 Yr 2007 School Overview 1. The upgrading of our ICT Network. We now have a great computer lab of 28 modern computers, and we have two mobile trolleys with 14 laptops for use in the classrooms. 2. We have now also purchased 8 Interactive Whiteboards 1 for each classroom. These are great teaching tools that, as we learn to use them more effectively, will really benefit our students learning. 3. The grants will enabled us to also outfit with furniture and other needs, the 2 new portable classrooms that will arrive in We do thank the Federal Government for its support with these grants. A great highlight of the year was the excellent academic achievements of our Grade 3-6 students in the 2007 University of NSW International Maths and English Competitions. Out of 103 students who sat the Mathematics, 22 came in the top 1% of Australasia, gaining High Distinctions. 25 gained Distinctions. (top 10%) 36 gained Credits.(top 20%) In English, 16 came in the top 1% of Australasia gaining High Distinctions, 25 gained Distinctions, and 12 credits. We were also greatly thrilled that 6 of our students gained the highest marks in their year levels for the competitions. In October these students were awarded 7 medals between them by the University of NSW, at a special ceremony held at the Carlton Crest in Melbourne. These high achievers are pictured below holding their medals after the ceremony. Heidi Morgan (2nd R), was awarded 2 medals, one for Maths and one for English. This is a very rare accomplishment and is highlighted on the Universities website. 4

5 School Overview 2007 also saw the Introduction of the Government s School Chaplaincy Program. NCC Primary was granted $60,000 to be used over 3 years to support Chaplaincy at our school and we are tremendously fortunate to have Mrs Robyn Kimpton to take on the role of a chaplain for 2 days a week. Buddy bears for the Madeleine Foundation Project. Yes, 2007 has indeed been another busy and happy year, leaving us with many great memories and much gratitude to our God for His supporting guidance and care School Captains Service to others plays an important role in our school. It was with pride that we raised money to support the Madeleine Foundation: our Students made up and sent across to Africa, 130 Samaritan Xmas Shoe Boxes filled with wonderful goodies for children to receive for Xmas; the Coronella retirement home became a focus for reaching out to the elderly in the community and visits and concerts became part of our school life; $7,000 was raised to support ADRA s global relief projects. But perhaps the most meaningful aspect of our school life was to see 5 of our students and 3 of our parents commit their lives to Christ and be baptized. A wonderful spirit of belonging, pride and caring has built throughout our Campus this year. This is indeed very important to me and to our school community. Xmas Shoe Boxes for Africa So finally, I would like again to acknowledge and thank all members of our school community for their ongoing commitment, trust and support of Nunawading Christian College. 8 Student Progress & Achievements The graphs on the right display data taken from the annual Achievement Indicator Monitor (AIM) program. The AIM tests are annual Government tests sat by Year 3 and 5 students in Literacy and Numeracy. The 2 graphs on the right, display the percentage of Year 3 and 5 students who according to their AIM results, were above the National Benchmarks in Reading Writing and Numeracy. The data shows that in Year 5, 100% of students exceed the National Benchmarks. Year 3 students achieved 100% in all but reading (99%). Once again this data highlights the effectiveness of the teaching and learning philosophy and the high standards at NCC. The table below provides us with a comparison of student achievement in AIM Reading and Mathematics/Number levels in Yr 3 and 5, 2006 & It allows us to compare NCC mean scores against Statewide Mean scores. 10 Student Engagement & Wellbeing/ Pastoral Care Student Progress & Achievements Chapel Drama We believe: HAPPY STAFF = HAPPY STUDENTS = HAPPY PARENTS = GOOD, SOUND STUDENT LEARNING & WELL BEING We believe that to achieve good student engagement and wellbeing, as expressed in the opening statement above, it is essential to be happy at, and to be happy with, your school. The next section of the report deals with Student, Teacher and Parent Satisfaction and it is very pleasing to note that we do have happy students, staff and parents. Our staff are a great team - they are very hardworking, dedicated to do what it takes to bring out the best in each individual child and each is mission driven to. empower students to ENJOY quality learning, to achieve to their potential and to be inspired to follow Christ. We have a consistent whole school approach to student engagement and wellbeing. Our school program in 2007 catered for this in a variety of ways: Our Whole School Character Values Program impacts on our students and staff across the school. The fortnightly value being taught, discussed and practiced, helps our students in their character development and in reaching out to others. It develops a sense of wellbeing and also serves as anti-bullying motivation. We have a strong emphasis on developing Literacy and Numeracy skills across the school. Our lower school teachers are commended for their consistent effort and focus in grounding students in sound reading, writing and mathematics skills. This is the focused concentration of the lower school. The efforts put in by the rest of the teaching staff to improve reading, writing and mathematics standards must also be commended. Awards and certificates are given out every week at our Chapel assembly to appreciate character values displayed, achievement in class work or sports, or for something done or achieved that deserves recognition. The Reading Recovery and the Literacy & Numeracy Tutition Assistance Programs also benefit our students greatly. Many children have been encouraged and helped with their reading and writing skills through these programs. Thanks must go to Mrs Smith, Mrs Pitt and Mrs McKeon for their excellent programs. We were successful in receiving a resiliency grant from the Government for This enabled us to engage a drama teacher to work very effectively with small drama groups across the school. Drama develops confidence, public speaking skills, emotional expression, creativity, team work & organization. Assistance was also given with the wonderful school production performed at the year end concert in which every child had a part. Gr 1 Eskimos Gr 6 Africans Prep Mongolians 10

11 Student Progress & Achievements Our special Festival of Faith Week (a spiritual emphasis week) was a highlight for Rainbow the Clown from the USA was our special guest speaker. The week was a week of great fun and character building with many students making decisions to be committed to Christ. Starting school everyday with Worship, a positive time of praise, prayer and discussions on spiritual values, provides a great positive start to the day and also reinforces self esteem. The Gifted and Talented Program for students identified as having outstanding potential in various areas, provided enrichment for these students academic needs. A big thank you goes to Mrs Pitt and the work she is doing in this area. English as a Second Language Programs are run for our International students and other ESL students. The welcoming and integration of our Over -seas Students into the mainstream has been a wonderful cultural and social benefit to us all as a school. Sally Squad Puppets The Preps Buddy Program started in 2006, has continued successfully bringing a great sense of comradeship and a sense of belonging together to our older and younger students. The Family Life sexuality seminars, run for Grade 5 & 6 students and their parents were very successful. They were great building times for the parents and their children. Grade 3 and 4 students will again benefit from these seminars next year. Students & teachers need to have fun in their learning & social activities. In 2007 Activities such as: School Picnic, the Healthy Eating Pyjama Breakfast, The Sally Squad Puppets, Andrew Wegners Mini-beasts visit, Nuna Idol Talent Quest, Grade 3/4 Sleepover, Grade 5 Character Challenge 4 day Camp, Grade 6 Trip to Canberra, Buddy Parties, ADRA Walkathon, Musica Viva Shrewd Brass Concert,, World of Maths Hands-on Problem Solving day, the 3 CSIRO Science Hands-on Days, Gr 6 Imax Visit, Roller Skating morning, Retirement Village Coronella concerts, Zoo trips, other excursions and incursions, After School Sports Program, Gr 6 Graduation Dinner, all brought fun and learning together for our students. The Adventist School System s 2007 Professional Development Conference on Thinking with the Brain taken by John Josephs and Michael Pohl, gave staff excellent building blocks for developing a school wide focus on skilled thinking and Resiliency. Opportunities for leadership were provided for School Captains and for other students. The School Captains had the opportunity to attend the National Young Leaders Day and take a Chapel presentation for the school. They attended a forum with the Prime Minister John Howard, attended various leadership morning teas with local Council and Members of Parliament, and prepared speeches and powerpoints to present to the school. The Captains and Grade 6 students also were trained and did a very effective job in touring visitors around our school at special Functions, and also were trained to be role models to the younger students around the school. Leadership opportunities are also extended to all students when they organize and run the weekly Chapel assembly. This happens 4 times a year for each class and students are exposed to public speaking, preparing items, singing and organizing the program with the Chaplain and class teacher.
