4 A Message from the Principal Nunawading Christian College has been providing quality, Christian education for over 47 years. Our commitment to providing values based education within a nurturing environment is something we are proud of. I believe that the success of our school lies in our holistic approach to education. By focussing on the academic, physical and spiritual aspects of our students lives we ensure that they leave our school as well rounded individuals. Academically our students are performing well. Our NAPLAN results for 2013 again show that our students are outperforming their year level cohorts from schools within our demographic. Our VCE results for 2013 were outstanding, with 18% of our students receiving an ATAR score in the 90s. Overall Nunawading Christian College ranked in the 6th percentile statewide, placing our school alongside larger institutions such as Wesley College, Xavier College and Geelong Grammar. We are committed to providing up to date resources for our students. Over the past year we have seen some great improvements in our school facilities; with a new car park, providing ease of access to the school by our parent community, beautification of our school exteriors and student quadrangle and the addition of an outdoor amphitheatre. Our sporting program is flourishing with the opening of our eagerly awaited full size oval. This is being enjoyed by all of our students and has been the venue for a number of sporting competitions and events. Two new outdoor tennis and basketball courts have also been welcome additions to our sporting program. Our master plan will see improvements to our classrooms and science facilities over the next five years. Most importantly, however, I see the spiritual education of our students as one of our most important responsibilities as Christian educators. At Nunawading Christian College we take this seriously. As well as weekly Chapel programs, each year our school participates in a week long Festival of Faith. During this time our students are given the opportunity to enrich their personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Another important call to us as Christians is to be of service to others. To ensure that this value is passed on to our students we provide opportunities for them to fulfil this commission in a number of ways. In September this year a group of Year 10 students will head to Aore in Vanuatu to complete some much needed renovations to one of the areas poorer schools. As part of their Year 9 Challenge program, students are required to participate in community service in a not-forprofit organisation of their choice. Amongst the pressures of exams and study, our Year 12 students take time out to raise funds for a sponsor child through Asian Aid. Studies have shown that the secret to happiness is having a sense of purpose and an outward focus. I believe that by helping our students develop in all areas of their lives, that we are equipping them to be content and productive individuals. Mr Adrian Stiles (Bachelor of Education) Principal

They include: Year 9 Challenge Program Peer Support Program Camps Program for Years 7, 9 & 11 Ability split Maths classes Science Enrichment Program English Enrichment Program Service Project EISM Sport Program Chapel & Worship Programs Student Leadership Program Pastoral Care Program International Mission Trip School Play
11 School Community Feedback For 2013, students, parents and staff completed satisfaction surveys conducted by Independent Schools Victoria (ISV). Results from these surveys allowed the school to receive feedback and to analyse data sought from these three cohorts. The student surveys measured the extent to which students believed effective school practices were apparent across the following domains: Academic Program, Learning Outcomes, Pastoral Care, Personal Development/Leadership/ Discipline and Safety, Resources, School Ethos/Values, Peer Relationships and Transition. The parent surveys measured the extent to which parents believed effective school practices were apparent across the following domains: Curriculum/Academic Program, Quality of Teaching, Learning Outcomes, Pastoral Care, Discipline and Safety, Parental Involvement, Resources and Transition. In addition the survey asked parents to rate their overall experience, and whether they would recommend the school to others. Responses were measured on an 11-point satisfaction scale from 0-11 where 0 = complete disagreement and 11 = complete agreement. A summary of results from these surveys showed that overall there were no means below 5.00 (where a value of 5.00 results if there were as many negative responses as positive responses). The average means recorded by students for all questions across the domains was 7.4 which indicates a high level of satisfaction amongst our students. The average means recorded by parents for all questions across the ten domains was 8.1 which indicates a very high level of satisfaction amongst our parent community. Some of the perceived strengths and weaknesses highlighted by the surveys included the following: Perceived Strengths Excellent learning environment Teachers enthusiasm in teaching to all abilities Students are challenged in their studies Teachers know and care about students The school is a safe place to learn Parents are made to feel welcome School ethos and values Pastoral Care Transition at each year level Perceived Weaknesses Range of co-curricular offerings Library resources Access to high quality technology School resources Geographic spread of students requires expensive private bus network School has inadequate facilities (see future directions on the following page). A Year 12 Exit Survey was conducted under the guidance of Independent Schools Victoria (ISV) with the aim of gauging satisfaction levels amongst the Year 12 students at the completion of their secondary studies. Categories evaluated were Curriculum/Academic Program, Teaching Quality, Learning Outcomes, Personal Development/Leadership, Pastoral Care, Resources/Co-curricular Activities, Transition, School Ehtos/Values, Overall Rating and Maintaining Contact The survey measured responses on an 11-point satisfaction scale from 0 to 10 where 0 = complete disagreement and 10 = complete agreement. All 16 Year 12 students completed this survey. A summary of results from these surveys showed that overall there were no means below 5.00 (where a value of 5.00 results if there were as many negative responses as positive responses). The average means recorded for all questions across the ten domains was 7.6 which indicates a high level of satisfaction amongst our most senior students.
12 Future Directions The strategy directive for Adventist Schools Victoria this year has been good to great where good schools are transformed into great schools. This is definitely the aim for Nunawading Christian College. The beautification of the school s facilities during the first two stages of our ten year master plan has begun the transformation of Nunawading Christian College into a sought after boutique school in the Eastern suburbs. Stage 3 of the master plan will focus on refurbishment of the current classroom and administration layouts, an updated library and the provision of a school community centre. Technology and elearning initiatives commenced at the beginning of These included a significant boost in the wireless connectivity access points throughout the school, enabling students to better source valuable information. The roll out of a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program with senior students in term 1 will enable students to work on the technology of their choice. Nunawading Christian College will also become an esmart school. The esmart program is a deliberate approach in developing sustainable cybersafety, where the smart, safe and responsible use of technology becomes a cultural norm amongst students. Students will be equipped to embrace the best technology can offer, while also becoming savvy about the pitfalls. A program for gifted and talented students was rolled out at the start of the school year, targeting students who require more extension in their current learning program. A specialist teacher was employed to work with students in this program, ensuring individualised learning to meet students at their specific levels. Marketing initiatives are also underway to grow student numbers to around 400 to enable Nunawading Christian College to provide a more expansive program, while still maintaining the small school feel that is so valued by our students, parents and staff.
