2 INTRODUCTION The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) 25TH Anniversary Meeting will be held June 9-11, 2016, at the Sheraton Denver Downtown in Denver, CO. The meeting will welcome over 1,000 dental sleep medicine professionals to the city of Denver. AADSM promotes research and the clinical use of oral appliances and upper airway surgery for the treatment of sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD) and provides training and resources for those who work directly with patients. The Academy relies on your commitment and contributions to create a program that includes the latest scientific developments and educational content. Please share your expertise by submitting an abstract or session proposal. This is your chance to influence the meeting s educational curriculum like never before! By participating as a presenter, you can share your knowledge and address the latest challenges, practices and trends in the dental sleep medicine profession directly! 3 WHY SHOULD YOU SUBMIT AN ABSTRACT OR SESSION PROPOSAL FOR THE AADSM 25 TH ANNIVERSARY MEETING? Network with Leaders in the Dental Sleep Field: Discuss your findings and practice methods with expert dental sleep medicine clinicians and researchers from around the globe. Media Impact: Research presented will be considered for ongoing public relations initiatives and if selected, could be touted to top influential media across the country, as well as profiled in leading dentistry and sleep-related journals and magazines. Select research presented at the 2015 AADSM Annual Meeting was included in a national press release that was distributed to numerous trade media outlets. Research may also be highlighted on Facebook and Twitter, where it grabs the attention of peers and potential patients. Influence the Field: The success of this meeting is attributed to its blend of best clinical practices and most current research. 4 ABSTRACT SUBMISSION Deadline: December 16, 2015 OVERVIEW: The AADSM solicits research abstracts dedicated to enhancing clinical practice related to oral appliance therapy in adults and children, maxillomandibular advancement and upper airway surgeries, analysis of the upper airway, craniofacial and developmental characteristics related to sleep disorders, sleep bruxism, and orofacial pain associated with sleep disorders. All research abstracts are submitted for poster presentations. Posters should be clear and organized for viewing, measuring no larger than 4 x 4. Presenters are encouraged to display posters for the duration of the meeting as described in the abstract acceptance letter. Minimally, posters must be put up by 8:00am on the day of the presentation and remain on display until 6:00pm. The presenting author of the poster will be assigned a time slot during which he/she is expected to be physically present at the poster display to answer questions. Use of laptops during poster presentations or logos promoting commercial companies is prohibited. Research abstracts will be considered for an award if requested by the first (corresponding) author on the abstract application form. Awards for research abstracts include three (3) Graduate Student Research Awards and three (3) Clinical Research Awards. The Graduate Student Research Awards are designated for healthcare professionals who have recently graduated and for trainees conducting research in dental sleep medicine (undergraduate, graduate, masters, PhD, postdoctoral or resident training). The Clinical Research Awards will be presented to clinicians, researchers or academicians who do research in dental sleep medicine. See pages 6-7 for more details and information on the awards. Authors of a research abstract selected to receive an award are invited to give an oral presentation in addition to their poster presentation. Oral presentations consist of an 8-minute presentation followed by 2 minutes for questions and answers. The first author or any co-author may give the oral presentation. A presentation is required in order to receive the award. In addition to those abstracts that receive awards, the Research Committee may identify other high scoring abstracts for oral presentations. All accepted research abstracts will have the option to present a poster at the APSS Center. 5 SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCESS: All healthcare professionals and others conducting research in dental sleep medicine may submit abstracts. An individual may be the first author on a maximum of two research abstracts; there is no limit on co-authorship. In order to comply with ADA CERP guidelines, each author will be required to disclose any significant relationships with commercial interests by completing a conflict of interest disclosure form that can be found on the AADSM website at By submitting a research abstract, all authors attest that the abstract submitted has not been previously published elsewhere and transfers, assigns, or otherwise conveys all copyright ownership, including all rights incidental thereto, exclusively to the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Abstract presenters must register for the AADSM 25th Anniversary Meeting. Submission of an abstract constitutes the commitment of at least one author to present the abstract as accepted, regardless of presentation type or day/time assigned. Expenses associated with the preparation, submission, and presentation of an abstract are the responsibility of the author/presenter. All abstracts are blind peer-reviewed for acceptance. Research abstracts will not be accepted if they fail to reflect acceptable scientific methodology; such as, ethical approval (if appropriate), the data or statistical analyses do not justify the conclusions, the abstracts lack sufficient scientific or clinical merit or no data are included. The first author will receive notice of acceptance in March Accepted research abstracts will be published and copyrighted in an issue of the AADSM s Journal of Dental Sleep Medicine. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING AN ABSTRACT: To submit an abstract, please review all abstract submission guidelines. Research abstracts must conform to the following outline: A. Title B. Authors and Institutions C. Introduction D. Methods E. Results F. Conclusions G. Support (optional) Research abstracts may not exceed 500 words and are limited to ten authors per abstract. Included in the word count are the following: title, authors and institution/ departmental references, introduction, methods, results, conclusions and support (optional). The four section headings (introduction, methods, results, and conclusions) may not be substituted with different terms. References, tables, figures or any other graphics are not permitted. Brand names may not be used in abstract titles and are limited to one reference within the abstract body. 6 SUBMISSION: An application form must be completed in order for an abstract to be considered. The application can be found on the AADSM website at All application forms must be typed. Abstracts must conform to the Abstract Guidelines listed on the previous page and must be in a Microsoft Word format. Both the application form and the abstract must be submitted via to presentations@aadsm.org. REMEMBER All authors must disclose significant relationships with commercial companies. If you do not receive an acknowledgement of your submission within three business days, contact Beverly Basit at or bbasit@aadsm.org. GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD ELIGIBILITY 1. Be an undergraduate, graduate, master, doctoral, post-doctoral fellow or resident doing research in dental sleep medicine. All students who submit an abstract and are not members of the AADSM will be required to become a member (student membership for AADSM is free); 2. Currently enrolled in an advanced educational program and conduct research related to dental sleep medicine; or 3. Having received their certificate or degree within 18 months prior to the abstract application deadline. Entries will not be accepted from individuals who have previously received this award more than two times. Any research study completed during a dental/medical/other postgraduate or residency program shall be eligible. Abstracts must not be closely related to another submitted abstract with the same co-authors. All awardees will be invited to present an eight-minute summary of their papers at the annual meeting. 7 CLINICAL RESEARCH AWARD ELIGIBILITY 1. Be a dentist, physician, healthcare professional or other professional conducting research in dental sleep medicine; 2. First author on the abstract; and 3. Not a graduate student. CRITERIA The following criteria will be used to judge research abstracts: 1. The research project is applicable to dental sleep medicine. 2. The abstracts must be in English with proper grammar. 3. The abstract contains objectives, methods, results and conclusions and must be organized. 4. The abstract is not closely related to another submitted abstract with the same authors. 5. The research problem is well defined and its importance is clear. 6. The research methods are clearly outlined. 7. The data and statistical analysis are adequate to evaluate the objectives. 8. The results are adequate and coherent. 9. The conclusions are well founded based on the methods used, the results of the study and previously published literature. 10. The conclusions are adequately qualified (i.e. the conclusions have appropriate limitations as implied by author). 11. The originality of the paper. 12. 8 CHALLENGING CASE REPORT SUBMISSION Deadline: December 7, 2015 The Challenging Case Reports Session is a new format that provides a fast-paced venue for case reports or brief discussions of clinical problems. During this session, challenging cases will be reviewed and discussed. The cases will be selected by the Annual Meeting Committee, and individuals will be notified of whether or not their case is accepted for presentation in February If your case is accepted, you will be responsible for presenting a synopsis of the case using the Report Case Template during the general session Thursday-Saturday. Additional time will be allowed for questions and answers. Submission of a case constitutes the commitment to present the case, regardless of day/time assigned. An individual may be an author on only two Challenging Case submissions. Submissions for Challenging Case presentations will not be accepted if the authors do not describe a clinical problem or case presentation that is relevant to dental sleep medicine. Expenses associated with the preparation, submission and presentation of the case are the responsibility of the presenter. Case presenters must be registered for the meeting. Instructions for registering for the meeting will be included with the notice of acceptance. Cases must be submitted using the Report Case Template available at and must include the following information: A. Patient History and Physical Findings B. Supplemental Data (optional) C. Discussion of the Differential Diagnosis The submission process for the report cases is different than for session proposals. You must follow these steps to submit your case: 1. Complete the Report Case Form and Report Case Template which are available on the AADSM Annual Meeting website at and submit them via to presentations@aadsm.org by Monday, December 7. The form and case template must be submitted by December 7; no exceptions will be made to this deadline. 2. 9 SESSION PROPOSAL SUBMISSION Important Dates and Deadlines: December 7, 2015 February 2016 February 19, 2016 Deadline for session submissions Acceptance notifications are sent via Deadline to edit session information for final program OVERVIEW: The Annual Meeting Committee is soliciting proposals for the following sessions at the AADSM 25th Anniversary Meeting: Clinical Workshops, Discussion Groups and Symposia. Sessions should focus on a wide variety of topics including clinical practice, basic research and other aspects of dental sleep medicine. The Annual Meeting Committee encourages proposals on topics relevant to the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) examination content areas as follows*: Analyzing polysomnography reports to understand the patient s diagnosis in order to effectively manage sleep disordered breathing Completing and interpreting a thorough dental sleep medicine history, examination, and diagnostic testing in order to determine the patient s candidacy for therapeutic intervention Published research on treatment alternatives for sleep-disordered breathing Selection of oral appliances based on their purpose, physical features, and function as well as apply proper fitting techniques Indications, contraindications, possible complications and side effects associated with appliance use Assessing effectiveness, managing potential side effects, and providing longterm follow-up care Recognizing the appropriate interpretation and role of portable monitoring devices in dental sleep medicine Understanding available approaches to optimize oral appliance effectiveness Understanding breathing disorders of sleep in children and adolescents, as well as the diagnostic and treatment options for managing these patients FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL THE AADSM AT (630)

10 THE FOLLOWING ARE ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF SESSION PROPOSAL TOPICS*: Hypoglossal nerve stimulation GERD TMD/TMJ issues (academic/ clinician point/counterpoint) Oral myofunctional therapy Ethics Patient compassion Periodontal problems with oral appliance therapy Doing oral appliance therapy over Invisalign ortho trays Dental staff education *Submission of a session proposal on these topics in no way guarantees acceptance. SUBMISSION INFORMATION: Session proposals will be accepted for presentation from 8:00 am on Friday, June 10 through Saturday, June 11. SPEAKERS MUST BE CONFIRMED PRIOR TO SUBMITTING A SESSION PROPOSAL. The information provided within the proposal will be used to highlight accepted sessions in the preliminary and final programs. With this in mind, changes and/or additions (i.e. faculty names, title changes) must be submitted prior to February 19, These changes will only be incorporated into the final program. All speakers are responsible for the information included within their slides and are responsible for obtaining copyright permissions. All speakers will be required to agree to a copyright assignment statement when submitting a session proposal. AUDIOVISUAL INFORMATION: The standard audiovisual equipment that is provided for each session is as follows: LCD projector, laser pointer and microphones. The use of personal laptops is prohibited. Requests for additional audiovisual equipment must be included in the session proposal. Internet connections are not provided in session rooms; requests for internet in session rooms will not be approved. Audience response systems are not provided for sessions; requests for audience response systems will not be approved. All speakers are required to upload their presentations with the audiovisual technician that will be setup in the back of the meeting room. 11 CLINICAL WORKSHOPS: Clinical Workshops are forums for clinicians to review and discuss clinical challenges in dental sleep medicine within a one-hour time slot. These sessions are appropriate for the presentation and discussion of controversial clinical topics or difficult clinical situations that demonstrate the critical thinking process in clinical dental sleep medicine. A maximum of 2 speakers are allowed. Those speakers who have been confirmed for an accepted session must be the people who actually deliver the presentations; changes in session speakers must be reviewed by the AADSM Annual Meeting Committee. Presentation handouts for all Clinical Workshops are prohibited. DISCUSSION GROUPS: Discussion Groups are forums for a less formal presentation of a topic within a one-hour time slot. The AADSM encourages conversations on controversial subjects and pro/con discussions or presentations. These sessions should stimulate interest and discussion with the audience without extensive data presentation or use of audiovisual equipment and without necessarily reaching a conclusion. A question or series of questions should be introduced by the panel of discussants to start the session. A Discussion Group proposal must be presented within the guidelines stated. Proposals that are structured similar to a Symposium will be considered as such and evaluated with the Symposium proposals. A maximum of 3 speakers are allowed. Those speakers who have been confirmed for an accepted session must be the people who actually deliver the presentations; changes in session speakers must be reviewed by the AADSM Annual Meeting Committee. Presentation handouts for all Discussion Groups are prohibited. SYMPOSIA: Symposia sessions are allotted a one-hour time slot to present the latest data and ideas on topics in dental sleep medicine and sleep research. A maximum of 2 speakers are allowed for Symposia. Individual presentations, which should be approximately 30 minutes each including questions, should be integrated on the same topic. Those speakers who have been confirmed for an accepted session must be the people who actually deliver the presentations; changes in a Symposium must be reviewed by the AADSM Annual Meeting Committee. Presentation handouts for all Symposia are prohibited. Session speakers should be aware that individuals are limited to two presentations per meeting in order to encourage a wide variety of speakers and promote diversity of content at the meeting. 12 SESSION PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS Deadline: December 7, 2015 All session proposals must follow the outline specified below. A template can be found on the AADSM website at Please complete this document and save a copy for your records before submitting it to the AADSM in Microsoft Word. Please provide complete and accurate information, as the information will be used in the program and course materials. If a proposal is incomplete, the submission will be returned. In order to comply with ADA CERP guidelines, speakers will be required to disclose and resolve any significant relationships with commercial interests by completing a conflict of interest disclosure form that can be found on the AADSM website at If a session proposal is accepted, the speakers are responsible for providing a detailed agenda and submitting all required materials by the appropriate deadlines. To submit a proposal, use the template available at and submit as an attachment to presentations@aadsm.org. A confirmation receipt will be sent via within three business days of submission. Type of Proposal Indicate the type of proposal you are submitting. 2. Session Title Provide a session title. 3. Target Audience Indicate which education level applies to the presentation. 4. Learning Objectives List 3-4 learning objectives of the session. 5. Content Describe the content that will be covered during the session. 6. Agenda Include a detailed agenda of the session with a 500-word limit. 7. Need Explain how the session will contribute positively to the AADSM 25 TH Anniversary Meeting and why this format is the best venue for the presentation. 8. Speaker Information and Biographical Sketch Include contact information and a brief paragraph biographical sketch for each speaker. 9. 13 REIMBURSEMENT GUIDELINES FOR CLINICAL WORKSHOPS, SYMPOSIUM, AND DISCUSSION GROUPS ONLY These guidelines do not apply to abstract or clinical case presenters. The AADSM meeting department coordinates and manages all issues related to speaker reimbursements. The following guidelines for speaker reimbursements must be adhered to when proposing a session. Registration for the AADSM Annual Meeting is complimentary. The AADSM office will process a registration on behalf of the speaker. Any speaker who would like to attend additional sessions such as pre-meeting educational courses or ticketed events should contact the AADSM at (630) for registration information or refer to the AADSM Preliminary Program (available in March 2016). Registration fees for additional sessions are the responsibility of the speaker. Speakers who plan to attend educational courses that they are not speaking in will be responsible for the registration fee. Roundtrip airfare will be reimbursed provided reservations are made at least 21 days in advance for coach seating on common carriers. The individual assumes the responsibility for the difference in price for tickets purchased outside these guidelines. If the speaker chooses to drive instead of fly, reimbursement within a 300 mile radius will be at the current IRS mileage rate, plus parking. If the destination is greater than 300 miles, the AADSM will reimburse the lesser of mileage or the lowest airfare. Transportation between home/airport and between the airport/site destinations should be via shuttle or taxi as the situation warrants. The use of limousines or sedans is not reimbursable unless price is comparable or less than taxi fare. Other car services, such as car rentals, should be avoided and may not be reimbursed unless prior authorization is obtained. Use of a personal vehicle for transportation between home/airport will be reimbursed mileage at the current IRS mileage rate. Additional expenses for special arrangements made outside these guidelines will be the responsibility of the speaker. The AADSM will reimburse for a standard room, at the contracted room rate, at the headquarter hotel. For each day that a speaker presents, he/she will be reimbursed for the night prior to and the night of each scheduled presentation not to exceed three nights total per annual meeting. Expenses for special accommodations will be the responsibility of the speaker. The AADSM will not reimburse personal expenses such as in-room movies, phone calls, internet, etc. The AADSM offers up to $50.00 for meals per speaker on the day of the presentation. 14 CONTINUING EDUCATION The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. Concerns or complaints about a CE provider may be directed to the provider or to ADA CERP at The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine adheres to the standards set forth by the ADA. To comply with the required guidelines of the ADA CERP Program, every speaker and author of an abstract must submit the conflict of interest statement (online at The AADSM does not allow commercial support of its educational sessions including abstract presentations. This includes commercial support in the form of honoraria, travel expenses, and other accommodations. ADA CERP guidelines must be followed to offer continuing education credit. In order to comply with these guidelines, all speakers and authors of abstracts must comply with the conflict of interest policy found on page 15 in this booklet. Additionally, speakers cannot promote any commercial interests during their presentation. This includes, but may not be limited to, displaying logos and/or advertising in their presentations. Please keep in mind that commercial interests include educational events and materials from which an individual receives honoraria, travel reimbursement or royalties. If a speaker/author does not comply with the AADSM Conflict of Interest Policy, the speaker will not be permitted to participate in the program and may be banned from participating in future meetings. The AADSM Annual Meeting Committee will review speaker s disclosures for session proposals and the AADSM Research Committee will review author s disclosures for research abstracts to ensure compliance with the requirements stated above. Speakers/authors will be required to disclose any relevant financial relationships with commercial interest verbally during their sessions. 15 AMERICAN ACADEMY OF DENTAL SLEEP MEDICINE GUIDELINES REGARDING COMMERCIAL SUPPORT AND CONFLICT OF INTEREST The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, in planning continuing education programming, will adhere to the following policies: 1. Program topic selection will be based on perceived needs for professional information and not for the purpose of endorsing specific commercial drugs, materials, products, treatments, or services. 2. Funds received from commercial sources in support of any educational programs shall be unrestricted and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine shall retain exclusive rights regarding the selection of presenters, instructional materials, program content and format, etc. 3. Any and all commercial support received shall be acknowledged in program announcements, brochures, and the on-site program book. 4. Commercial support shall be limited to: a. the payment of reasonable honoraria; b. reimbursement of presenters out of pocket expenses; and c. the payment of the cost of modest meals or social events held as part of an educational activity. 5. Presenters will be instructed to avoid recommending or mentioning any specific product by its trade name, using generic terms whenever possible. When reference is made to a specific product by its trade name, reference shall also be made to competitive products. 6. Presenters will be required to disclose any potential bias to commercial supporters of any activity related to the educational event. THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF DENTAL SLEEP MEDICINE SHALL: 1. Be responsible for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of all Continuing Education (CE) activities. 2. Assure that presentations give a balanced view of all therapeutic options. 3. Assure that commercial exhibits do not influence planning nor interfere with the presentation of CE activities. 4. Be responsible for making ultimate decisions regarding funding arrangements for CE activities. 5. Assure that commercially supported social events at CE activities do not compete with, nor take precedence over, the educational events. 6.
