1 Bethel Bible Seminary Summer Intensive Course Syllabus Professors: Dr. Fai LUK, Dr. KK CHAN, Dr. Bill TSANG Course Name and Code: WR9014 Research Bridge Course Design and Description: The course is designed to introduce the doctoral students to the dissertation writing process. It will help students to get organized, to prepare a dissertation timeline, to develop effective writing strategies, to choose or refine a dissertation topic and to work towards a proposal. Students will undertake literature review of both the English and Chinese information world, understand evidence-based research and familiarize with field research like questionnaire design, conducting surveys, having interviews, making observations etc. and interact with other students during the course. Instructional Methodology: This class will include faculty-led, in-class lectures, directed group discussions, guided book reviews, prescribed projects, and teachings from local experienced guest lecturers. Students are encouraged to participate in qualitative interview practice and quantitative analysis of data. Learning Outcome: Upon successfully completing this course, the doctoral students should: 1. Have a broader reflection of her/his dissertation project. 2. Have a timeline from which to work on the project to completion. 3. Understand the process of research online and offline. 4. Review the skills required to conduct qualitative and quantitative research. Luk served as a church planter, evangelist, and ordained pastor before moving into active participation as General Secretary for the Hong Kong Church Renewal Movement, and eventually as General Secretary Hong Kong Council of The Church of Christ in China, from 1997 to Dr. Luk obtained his DMin in Westminster Theological Seminary in Urban Mission in He has also heavily involved in promoting Urban Ministry in HK, the Chinese Coordination Centre of World Evangelism, and networking with Chinese Churches in China through the Christian Leadership Exchange based in Los Angeles. 3 Professors: Rev. Dr. CHAN Kim-kwong, PhD, ThD, JP Executive Secretary, Hong Kong Christian Council Rev. Chan received his undergraduate training in Nutrition from McGill University, M.Div. from China Graduate School of theology, and subsequently finished two masters and two doctoral degrees from University of Ottawa and Pontifical St Paul University in the areas of Theology, Economics, China Studies and History. He later did graduate studies on Agricultural Economics at University of London and has authored and co-authored of more than a dozen volumes and has published 60+ academic papers/chapters in English, Chinese, French, and Italian. Revd. Chan holds various academic honors in different academic institutions in Hong Kong, UK, China and USA. He has given consultations on China related issue to various Governments in Europe, North America and the Middle East. He is a Justice of the Peace of the Hong Kong Special. Dr. Bill TSANG, B.S., M.S., M.A., Ed.M., Ed.D. (Harvard) bill.y.p.tsang@gmail.com Research Associate, Wah Ching Centre of Research on Education in China (CREC), Faculty of Education, University of Hong Kong Chief Research Officer, Youth Foundation Dr. Tsang has been working on a policy action research project aiming to help migrant youth in Beijing to increase their education opportunities, social capital and social mobility. Prior to joining CREC, Dr. Tsang was assistant professor in the Department of Social Work at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at CREC in 2001/02 from Harvard University where he received his doctoral degree in Human Development and Psychology. He has conducted research on Chinese immigrants in the US and the Mainland new arrivals in Hong Kong. For the past seven years, he has been conducting research on migrant families in Shanghai and Beijing, focusing on the educational opportunities, achievement motivation, social identity, and migration experience of the second generation. Dr. Tsang is also an active clinical counselor (licensed in Massachusetts, US) and a registered psychologist in Hong Kong. Student Registration deadline: on or before Aug 1, 2013 Pre-class work: 1. Pre-class reading: half of the 1500 pages is due before class, 50% is due at the completion of the course. A reading list is attached to the final assignment. 2. 4 Post-Class work: Please send all homework by directly to on or before Oct 25, 2013 (60 days after the class ends). All homework must be submitted using the Paper Template, please refer to the DOCTORAL DISSERTATION HANDBOOK. Assignment: Reading Report - There are no post-class requirements. However, students have to include a bibliography list of books in your dissertation proposal. Chapter 1 Journal A one to two-page (double-spaced) journal will require three levels of work: (a) Document each session, both in class or other ad hoc sessions throughout the month. Describing, narrating and summarizing the essence of what you heard and saw is the first part of the assignment. (b) Analysis of what was said or not said, i.e. the theological assumptions and the positions of the presentations (c) Extrapolate the transferable principles for your context and ministry. It should be submitted with the rest of your work and become Chapter 1 of your work. Evaluation will be based on completeness, creativity, insightful analysis and contextual application. 10 pages Chapter 2 Course Project The course project will require students to design their dissertation proposal and present a skeletal paper within their area. This paper should be about 25 pages. Chapter 3 Evaluation Write an evaluation paper that reflects what you have learned and whether it met what you anticipated from course learning outcomes (goals or objectives) as well as personal goals for the course. Assign yourself a grade. 3 pages. Note: Students are encouraged to write their assignments and share them with their personal support group.
