6 Academic Preparation Career Pathway Ph.D. Applicants should have prior experience conducting research, as well as some professional experience in educational settings. Ph.D. graduates are prepared for careers as educational researchers. Graduates may become university faculty members, work in research positions in governmental agencies, or work for other organizations such as non-profits. Ed.D. Applicants should have professional experiences in education. Examples include experiences as teachers, teacher-leaders, and administrators in a range of educational settings. Ed.D. graduates become highly skilled researchinformed practitioners in the field of education. Graduates may work as teacher-leaders, university leaders, principals, superintendents, and other educational leaders. 2 April

8 The Fellowship provides an annual stipend of HK$240,000 (approximately US$30,000) and a conference and research-related travel allowance of HK$10,000 (approximately US$1,300) per year to each awardee for a period of up to three years. More than 230 PhD Fellowships will be awarded in the 2015/16 academic year. 2 April

12 We usually require a minimum 2:1 undergraduate degree, a Masters degree with at least a high Merit (or overseas equivalents) in a subject appropriate to the research area. Applicants should provide evidence of capacity to work at distinction level, and a piece of independently produced academic work (e.g. a Master s essay/dissertation or published or unpublished paper) that has been assessed by the supervisor and admissions tutor as showing potential for doctoral level work. An approved professional qualification and extensive practical experience in the relevant field may be taken into account when evaluating an application. 2 April

17 1. A clear argument or question which you wish to develop in the thesis including an indication of its significance - Why is it important to develop this thesis? What will it contribute to current scholarship? How will it be original/go beyond what has already been said? 2 April

21 The proposal will be roughly 4-6 pages long (1.5 line spacing and 12pt font Times New Roman) you can check the different institutions to which you are applying for their specific guidelines. The proposal needs to demonstrate that you have a clearly defined project that is both original and can be completed effectively within the three year period which is normal for UK PhDs. The project should therefore be ambitious but not so as to be impractical! 2 April

25 Important for networking and making contacts Introduce yourself to professors and other students Use business cards, if you have them Volunteer for service in some conferences Why should you care? Build a community around yourself outside your university People should get to know you, not just your advisor Letters of reference, thesis committee members, job interviews, etc. Don t stand around, waiting for people to talk to you Aggressiveness is a great quality don t be shy 2 April
