5 INSTITUTIONAL MISSION & GOALS (Page 1 of 2) MISSION STATEMENT has at its core undergraduate programs, significant research, and graduate programs to the doctoral level appropriate to its size and classification. aspires to be a premiere undergraduate residential institution that provides its students with innovative and challenging liberal arts and sciences core integrated with a comprehensive number of professional programs. The learning environment at the Mountain Campus is unmatched for natural beauty and for student-centered programs and services. Undergraduate programming prepares students for life in the twenty-first century by assuring individual development through small classes, close interaction with senior faculty, and sophisticated learning technologies more commonly found at the nation s leading private universities. also provides exceptional quality in a selected number of post-baccalaureate certificates, masters and doctoral programs in its areas of greatest strength. The University seeks to expand its post-baccalaureate programs as interdisciplinary fields expand and as the needs of economy demand increasing levels of educational preparation. Intimately linked to its undergraduate and graduate missions, the university s faculty, organized in departments, research centers and institutes, advances knowledge in traditional disciplines, in fields related to NAU s unique environment on the Colorado plateau, and in response to the needs of the state and region for solutions to real world problems. Finally, NAU is an integral part of the northern Arizona and Flagstaff communities. It embraces its mission to serve rural Arizona, Native American peoples, and seeks a partnership in providing economic, cultural, and social opportunities for all citizens of the region. Consonant with its mission to serve the state s rural counties, the university has innovative partnerships with rural community colleges, operates an education center in Yuma and IITV sites in twenty-six locations plus technology-based delivery into offices and homes. 7 DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT & GOALS MISSION STATEMENT Support a quality educational experience while providing competitive NCAA Division I athletic opportunities as representatives of. GOALS STUDENT-ATHLETE 1. Promote academic excellence and encourage graduation within four years. 2. Promote the health and well being of student-athletes. 3. Recruit quality student-athletes who can compete on a regional and national level. 4. Continue to be a leader on campus in the recruitment of under-represented populations. 5. Insure that the men s and women s sports programs are treated fairly and equitably. 6. Promote ethnic and cultural diversity within all athletics programs. COMPLIANCE 7. Conduct the athletics program in compliance with NCAA, Big Sky Conference, National Independent Collegiate Swimming Association, Arizona Board of Regents and NAU guidelines. 8. Uphold NAU, Big Sky Conference and National Independent Collegiate Swimming Association standards in all athletics operations and activities. COMMUNITY 9. Continue to build relationships with student-athlete alumni. 10. Conduct programs that positively impact the youth of northern Arizona. 11. Serve as a positive university liaison to the community. 12. Continue to serve as an integral part of a campus residential experience of a premiere undergraduate university. CHAMPIONSHIPS AND FACILITIES 13. Win conference championships and be competitive at the NCAA Division I Championship level. 14. Build and improve athletic facilities that are NCAA Division I Championship caliber. 15. Continue to run a fiscally sound NCAA Division I athletics program

8 DEPARTMENT OF ATHLETICS STATEMENT DISTRIBUTION POLICY The Department of Athletics mission statement and goals shall be distributed and published as follows: 1. Student-Athlete Handbook: The mission & goals statement shall be included in the Student-Athlete Handbook. The Handbook shall be distributed to all incoming student-athletes during the orientation program. 2. Student-Athlete Advisory Committee: The mission & goals statement shall be distributed and discussed at the first Student- Athlete Advisory Committee meeting of each year. 3. Department of Athletics Web-Page: The mission & goals shall be posted on the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics official website; 4. Department of Athletics Policy and Procedure Manual: The mission & goals shall be included in the Athletics Department Policy and Procedure Manual. The Policy and Procedures manual will be distributed to new employees and will be updated annually for all current employees. 5. Other Department Publications: As appropriate and as space allows, the mission & goals statement shall be included in other Athletics Department publications. 6. Community, Campus and Department Functions: When at all possible and when appropriate, the mission statement shall be distributed or cited by staff members speaking at or attending community, campus and Department functions

9 NATIONAL ORGANIZATION A. INSTITUTION MEMBERSHIP is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division I (I-AA Football), and is governed by its policies and regulations. B. INSTITUTIONAL CONTACT In 1983, the NCAA adopted a policy requesting each member institution to identify institutional staff member to be responsible for coordinating the application of NCAA rules and regulations. has identified the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) as that contact. If coaches have any questions related to NCAA rules and regulations, the first contact should be made with the Assistant Director of Athletics-Compliance, who will contact the NCAA Faculty Athletic Representative, the Big Sky Conference office or NCAA office as necessary

10 CONFERENCE AFFILIATION s Intercollegiate Program is a member of the Big Sky Conference for its men s and women s programs, with the exception of the Women s Swimming and Diving program which is affiliated with the National Independent Conference. The Big Sky Conference Office is located in Ogden, Utah; its member institutions are: Eastern Washington University Cheney, WA Idaho State University Pocatello, ID University of Montana Missoula, MT Montana State University Bozeman, MT Flagstaff, AZ Portland State University Portland, OR Sacramento State University Sacramento, CA Weber State University Ogden, UT University of Northern Colorado Greeley, CO

12 INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC COMMITTEE (1 of 4) Intercollegiate Athletics Committee (IAC) Charter May, Membership All members (except students and FAR) will serve three-year rotating terms. These terms will be staggered in order to provide continuity. Members are encouraged not to serve consecutive terms. A. Voting members (17) 1. One (1) full-time student, appointed by the Associated Students of NAU (ASNAU) for a two-year term; 2. Eleven (11) elected faculty representatives, one from each college/school; 3. Four (4) appointed representatives: a. three (3) staff members: one (1) appointed by Director of Financial Aid; one (1) appointed by Director of Admissions; one (1) appointed by Dean of Students; b. one(1) administrator appointed by the Provost; 4. One (1) faculty athletic representative (FAR). B. Non-voting members (6) 1. Director of Athletics; 2. Associate Director of Athletics-External Operations; 3. Assistant Director of Athletics Student Services; 4. Associate Athletics Director for Business Operations; 5. Coach representing Department of Athletics; 6. Student-athlete appointed from the Student-Athlete Advisory Board. II. Charge to the Committee The IAC will act in both oversight and advisory capacities to the Director of Athletics on the operations of the Department of Athletics. This committee will ultimately be responsible to the President of University. III. Leadership Structure of the Committee The committee will be directed by a leadership team consisting of three members: a chair, a chair-elect, and a past chair. At one of the first meetings of each academic year, a voting member will be elected as chair-elect. This individual will serve as chair in the next year, and will serve as past chair in the

13 INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC COMMITTEE (2 of 4) third year. If past-chair status results in a fourth year on the committee, the person will serve as a nonvoting member. In the absence of the chair, the chair-elect will serve, and in the absence of both chair and chair-elect, the past chair will serve. IV. Subcommittee Structure The committee members will serve on at least one subcommittee from the areas detailed below. The core responsibilities of each subcommittee are also listed; however, it is expected that other related areas of concern or advice may arise. Each subcommittee will be chaired by one of the voting members of the committee, who will be responsible for holding meetings (which may be held via , for example) and for providing reports to the committee as a whole. A member from the Department of Athletics will serve as a liaison for each subcommittee. A. Governance and Commitment to Rules Compliance Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) Liaison: Director of Athletics, Assistant Director of Athletics - Compliance compliance with Big Sky Conference and NCAA rules, and Board of Regents policies which relate to student-athletes; compliance with Board of Regents policy on post-eligibility scholarships; the success of post-eligibility scholarships as measured by graduation of studentathletes; the propriety of the relationship between the Department of Athletics and any and all booster organizations. B. Representation in the Hiring Process (at least one voting member of the IAC will be appointed as needed to Search Committees.) Liaison: Director of Athletics Participation on any search committees related to administration, coaching or academic oversight within the Department of Athletics. C. Fiscal Integrity Liaison: Associate Athletics Director Operations the efficiency of the Department of Athletics in managing its human, fiscal, and physical resources; the effectiveness of fund-raising efforts; the financial success of marketing and promotional efforts

Commitment to Equity Liaison: Associate Director of Athletics Student Services the appropriateness of balance and attention between women s and men s athletics as measured by scope of activities, awards programs, physical and fiscal resources made available, academic support, recruitment, etc.; members serve on the University Gender Equity Committee. E. Academic Integrity Liaison: Academic Services Coordinator the academic progress of student-athletes; the availability and effectiveness of academic support services to student-athletes. F. Communication between committee and the University and community Liaison: Sports Information Director V. Meetings the effectiveness of the outreach programs; the effectiveness of relationships with other units of the University; the effectiveness of the relationship between the Department of Athletics and any and all booster organizations; the effectiveness of marketing and promotional efforts; the success and appropriateness of annual special events such as the Hall of Fame Dinner, awards banquets, etc. A. The committee will meet at least once a month during the academic year. Additional meetings can be convened upon agreement of a majority of the membership or at the request of the Athletic Director. B. Regular meeting times will be determined by the membership of the committee. C. An agenda will be set for each meeting. Agenda items may be submitted in advance to the chair by any member of the committee. D. The chairs of each subcommittee will provide brief updates each meeting. E. Minutes will be prepared and distributed to the membership

15 INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC COMMITTEE (4 of 4) F. Meetings will be divided into two sessions; open and executive. Approved minutes from the open session will be posted on the Web. VI. Voting A. A quorum must be present for any vote. A quorum will consist of more than one-half of the voting members (i.e., 9 voting members). B. A majority vote will be required to pass a motion. C. If a voting member is unable to be present, the member may give his or her written proxy to another voting member and copy the IAC chair
