4 An enticing idea takes shape In 1922 Dr. Schär began developing products aimed at promoting a healthy diet for young children with digestive disorders. The company s expertise contributed to the development of the first high-quality gluten-free foods and beginning in 1981, organisations in close collaboration with doctors and coeliac organisations, was developed into a full range of gluten-free products. With frequent new products, ever improving quality and investment in new technology and production facilities, it only took a few years for the company to emerge as market leader in Italy. The wider European market developed soon afterwards marked a further significant milestone, with the start of a major quality drive and intensive investment in research and development work. In terms of enjoyment, gluten-free foods are now comparable in flavour, taste, and quality when compared to conventional food products. Today, the Dr. Schär Group, which has its headquarters in Burgstall, Italy, is the powerful market leader in gluten-free products, with its own research laboratory in the renowned AREA Science Park in Trieste, and subsidiaries and production sites in Germany, Spain, the UK and the USA. Today, we have over 400 gluten-free products on sale around the world. New paths in the field of medical nutrition Since 2012, the company has been expanding its activities beyond the field of gluten-free dietary products, and is now entering into the medical nutrition sector, specialising in providing dietary products for medicinal usage. The takeover and restructuring back in 2011 of the brand Ceres-MCT in the field of medium-chain fatty acids marked the start of this journey. With the acquisition of comidamed GmbH, the company's portfolio was expanded to include products for people with hereditary metabolic disorders and childhood food allergies. In April 2013, the low-protein product line MEVALIA Low Protein was launched. The first products to promote a healthy diet for young children appear under the Dr. Schär brand. 5 THE COMPANY In 1981, the Merano businessman Ulrich Ladurner took over Dr. Schär. During his time at the helm, the small company became a market leader over the years in the field of gluten-free products, with a turnover of more than EUR 230 million and more than 710 employees worldwide. From South Tyrol into the world What began as a joint project between local Innsbruck doctor A. 17 MEDICAL NUTRITION PRODUCT RANGE Amino acid mixtures The COMIDAMED range includes amino acid mixtures and supplements for the dietary treatment of a range of hereditary protein metabolism disorders. All products are based on mixtures of pure L-amino acids, and are enriched with vitamins, minerals and trace elements in accordance with current international guidelines. Consumers can choose between concentrated amino acid mixtures and amino acid mixtures with additional energy from fat and carbohydrates.
