A STEP TOWARDS A HEALTHIER HEART Flora pro-activ contains plant sterols, which are designed to be consumed as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle, to significantly lower cholesterol absorption. Independent clinical trials confirm that eating plant sterols can significantly lower cholesterol absorption in 3 weeks, when combined with moving to a healthy diet and lifestyle. 1 Why is lowering cholesterol absorption important? Cholesterol plays a vital role in the day-today functioning of your body. However, cholesterol higher than recommended is bad news for your heart. It can cause the build up of fatty deposits in your arteries and cause them to narrow. Does Flora pro-activ really work? Flora pro-activ contains plant sterols, proven to significantly lower cholesterol absorption by up to 10%. An additional 5% reduction can occur when moving to a healthy diet and lifestyle. Over 30 studies have proven the cholesterol absorption-lowering effect of plant sterols found in Flora pro-activ spreads. How does Flora pro-activ work? Flora pro-activ contains plant sterols. Plant sterols naturally occur in small quantities in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, grain products, fruit and vegetables. They help to remove cholesterol from the body by partly blocking its absorption from the gut. 1. Katan MB et al. Efficacy and safety of plant stanols and sterols in the management of blood cholesterol levels. Mayo Clin Proc 2003; 78:

How does Flora pro-activ compare to other foods? There are a number of foods that can help lower cholesterol absorption when consumed regularly as part if a healthy diet. While these foods are good for the heart in other ways, plant sterol enriched foods have the greatest effect on lowering cholesterol absorption. Daily amount required to achieve effect Flora pro-activ* 1 rounded tablespoon Oats # 3 bowls Almonds # 30 almonds -3% Sunflower oil # 1.5 tablespoons -2% Olive oil # 1.5 tablespoons -1% Oily fish # No effect on cholesterol absorption 0% Arrows indicate the scientifically proven cholesterol benefits found in clinical studies -5% -10% Who can use Flora pro-activ? Flora pro-activ is designed for people who are following a healthy diet and lifestyle to lower their cholesterol absorption. Ask your health professional s advice on all areas of your cholesterol management, including whether Flora pro-activ spreads are suitable for you. If you are on cholesterol lowering medication you should follow your doctor s advice while using Flora pro-activ spread. Since children under 5 years, pregnant and lactating women have special dietary needs this product may not be suitable. In this instance, consult your doctor. 3 # Figures based on LDL cholesterol absorption lowering effects achieved by consuming realistic daily amounts of each food: 3 x 37g bowls of oats containing 3g beta-glucan, 40g almonds, 30mL sunflower oil, 30mL olive oil. While fish is good for the heart, it has no effect on lowering cholesterol abdorption. * Including other plant sterol enriched foods.

How do I use Flora pro-activ? Simply use Flora pro-activ like any other spread. Flora pro-activ can be used on bread or melted onto vegetables. Flora proactiv Original is even suitable for baking and frying. For best results, Flora pro-activ should be consumed at meal times. How much do I need? 25g (one rounded tablespoon) of Flora proactiv spread a day provides the optimum amount of plant sterols (2g). This is about the amount you would spread on 3 slices of bread. There is no additional benefit to consuming more than 3g per day. What happens if I forget to use it? Missing out on Flora pro-activ for a day or two won t matter too much but if you want to keep your cholesterol absorption down, you need to use Flora pro-activ on a regular basis as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Use 25g of Flora pro-activ daily to help keep it down Can my cholesterol absorption go down too far? No. Regular daily use of Flora pro-activ can lower cholesterol absorption in just three weeks as part of a healthy lifestyle. Continued use will simply help you to keep it down. Consuming more than 3g of plant sterols per day does not provide additional benefits. Lowering cholesterol absorption is a step towards a healthier heart. If you are concerned about your cholesterol, seek advice from your doctor. 4

Visit for more detailed nutrition information on Flora pro-activ as well as tips and information on a heart healthy diet and lifestyle. Do I still need to eat a healthy diet? Yes. Flora pro-activ should be used as part of a diet low in saturated fat and salt, and rich in fibre, fruits and vegetables. Lifestyle factors like not smoking, keeping physically active and reducing stress are also important. Isn t using Flora pro-activ just adding unwanted fat to my diet? Total fat consumed should be moderated, but what s also important is the type of fat eaten. Flora pro-activ spreads contain good polyunsaturated fats that are heart healthy. In addition, Flora pro-activ contains plant sterols which are scientifically proven to lower cholesterol absorption by up to 15%* when combined with the move to a healthy diet and lifestyle. What is the difference between Flora pro-activ and ordinary Flora spreads? Flora pro-activ spread contains plant sterols, the active ingredient clinically proven to significantly lower cholesterol absorption. Flora spreads contain polyunsaturated fat (good fat), have 65% less saturated fat than butter, and are virtually trans fat free. Regular Flora spreads do not contain plant sterols. *2g plant sterols per day lowers cholesterol absorption by 10% in 3 weeks. Moving to a healthy diet and lifestyle can lower it by a further 5%. 5

Flora pro-activ actively lower your cholesterol absorption Every portion of Flora pro-activ contains plant sterols which actively lower your cholesterol absorption. 25g a day (1 rounded tablespoon) provides the optimal intake. You can choose from the following: ORIGINAL Ideal for all kitchen applications - spreading, cooking, frying and baking. LIGHT A lighter alternative with 50% less fat*. Suitable for spreading and melting. ULTRA-LIGHT With 70% less fat*. Suitable for spreading and melting. Use as part of a healthy diet If you want to keep your cholesterol in check, include Flora pro-activ as part of your balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. OLIVE Use this spread for that Mediterranean touch. It is suitable for spreading and melting. BUTTERY Churned with real buttermilk, enjoy the great buttery taste. *than butter or margarine MARCH 2011
