1 CURRICULUM VITAE LAURA ELIZABETH NEWTON The University of Alabama at Birmingham Voice: (205) Department of Nutrition Sciences Fax: (205) WEBB rd Ave. S Birmingham, AL Personal Statement Education I was first inspired to pursue teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level while serving as a preceptor to dietetic interns at UAB Hospital. My teaching style is to fuse the foundation knowledge with the real-life application of nutrition. The knowledge alone is not enough to enable students to assess, diagnose, and implement nutrition interventions. Patient simulation utilizing real-life examples from my practice not only provides an opportunity to apply knowledge but also illustrates situations that they will encounter in practice coming from someone who has done the job. This relatability has been invaluable in teaching to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice. Students must also be able to communicate effectively with consumers, patients, and health professionals in a variety of formats. I utilize a variety of techniques in courses for students to demonstrate effective communication including verbal presentations, consumer and professional handouts. Although I did not start my career as a teacher, I truly believe it is my passion and privilege to educate future nutrition professionals M.A.Ed. University of Alabama at Birmingham - Exercise Physiology, Birmingham, Alabama 1989 B.S. Auburn University - Coordinated Dietetics Program, Auburn, Alabama. Graduated cum laude. These experiences include nutrition focused physical assessment utilizing a simulated acute-care setting. Here students are able to practice taking anthropometric measurements, skin assessment, breath and bowel sound auscultation and more. Other strategies employed in teaching include interprofessional problem based learning activities with other health profession disciplines and case studies based on real-life patient examples. Maintaining a clinical practice as well as involvement as an interventionist in ongoing research activities while teaching has enabled me to stay upto-date on current evidence-based practices and utilize those examples in teaching students about the application of nutrition principles.
