What is a Registered Dietician? Theresa B. 1. Hi my name is Caleb and I am a registered dietician student. We are asking people about What do you think registered dietician s do? Give people recommendations about diet and food plans based on what they are missing currently in their diet. Why do you think that? Because my nephew has a peanut allergy and he sees an RD to see what he can supplement in his diet for peanuts. Thanks for your time. Mike W. 2. Hi my name is Caleb and I am a registered dietician student. We are asking people about What do you think registered dietician s do? Give you advice and guidance to eating healthier as well as making a diet plan that is specific for you to allow you to lose weight or manage weight effectively and safely. They can also advice you if you are needed to be on specific diet restrictions due to disease or metabolic issue etc. Why do you think that? I am a Type II Diabetic and have seen and meet with dieticians to help make a diet plan with restrictions to allow for closer control of my blood glucose levels. Eric W. 3. Hi my name is Caleb and I am a registered dietician student. We are asking people about What do you think registered dietician s do? Tell you what you should and shouldn t be eating and what foods are healthier than others etc. Why do you think that? I feel like the name of this profession is pretty self explanatory and the reason we are seeing more dieticians now are because of all of the diseases that are on the rise in the United States due to the obesity epidemic. Nanci W. 4. Hi my name is Caleb and I am a registered dietician student. We are asking people about What do you think registered dietician s do? Guide people in the right direction regarding what they consume to help them achieve whatever goal they are trying to achieve; losing weight, becoming leaner, stronger or faster, or even gaining weight to become more balanced and healthy.
Why do you think that? Just from what I have heard on Dr. Oz and other TV programs and from what my own ideas are about that profession. Blake W. 5. Hi my name is Caleb and I am a registered dietician student. We are asking people about What do you think registered dietician s do? Probably tell you to eat your vegetables and don t eat as much pizza and pop Why do you think that? I don t know.because those things are healthy and they try to make you healthier. Nick E. 6. Hi my name is Caleb and I am a registered dietician student. We are asking people about What do you think registered dietician s do? Consult with you to come up with an individualized meal plan that will help you stay accountable and become healthier by supplying your body with the proper energy sources. They can also work with you to adjust food intake as needed to accommodate new medications or to help decrease an unpleasant medication side effect etc. Why do you think that? I was an exercise science undergraduate and have experiences working with RD s in school etc. I have also talked about their role in the health care system in a few classes in undergraduate studies. David P. 7. Hi my name is Caleb and I am a registered dietician student. We are asking people about What do you think registered dietician s do? I know they work in a variety of settings and places such as hospitals, physician offices etc. to help patients reach their desired goals as well as become as healthy as possible. They work with geriatric population to help give them the most nutrients and energy as possible with their sometimes frequent decrease in appetite. Why do you think that? My aunt is a dietician but I don t know more than what I hear my mom and other family members talk about. Cody B.
8. Hi my name is Caleb and I am a registered dietician student. We are asking people about What do you think registered dietician s do? They tell you what you can and can t eat and why some foods are better than others for you. Why do you think that? Well because they are dieticians and know the specifics about what is healthy for you and why some foods are more nutritious than others. Zach. M. 9. Hi my name is Caleb and I am a registered dietician student. We are asking people about What do you think registered dietician s do? I work with RD s and they do a variety of jobs that is not just how to lose weight and eat right, yes they help people eat healthier but they evaluate each patient and build and program just for that pt that will help the pt reach their goals more quickly, healthier and enable the pt to maintain that healthy life style safely. Why do you think that? I work as a nurse and interact with RD s on a regular basis. Jessica M. 10. Hi my name is Caleb and I am a registered dietician student. We are asking people about What do you think registered dietician s do? I am really unsure, but I know they see a variety of patients and help with all sorts of health issues. Why do you think that? My husband Zach works close to some RD s and I hear him talk about them sometimes but beyond that I don t know a whole lot about what they actually do.
Caleb Walls What is a Registered Dietician (RD) and what in the world do they do? A Dietitian is a food and nutrition expert who is qualified to guide people to eat right with professional experiences and knowledge. The majority of the dietitians work in the treatment and prevention of disease (administering medical nutrition therapy, often part of medical teams), in hospitals, HMOs, private practice or other health-care facilities. A large number of dietitians work in community and public health settings and academia and research. A growing number of dietitians work in the food and nutrition industry, in business, journalism, sports nutrition, and corporate wellness programs to design/ operate healthy foods or eating concepts to the public. Education Completed a minimum of a bachelor s degree at a US regionally accredited university or college and course work accredited or approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Completed an ACEND- accredited supervised practice program at a health- care facility, community agency, or a foodservice corporation or combined with undergraduate or graduate studies. Typically, a practice program will run six to 12 months in length. Passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR). For more information regarding the examination, refer to CDR s website at Completed continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration.some RDs hold additional certifications in specialized areas of practice. These are awarded through CDR, the credentialing agency for the Academy, and/or other medical and nutrition organizations and are recognized within the profession, but are not required. Some of the certifications include pediatric or renal nutrition, sports dietetics, nutrition support and diabetes education. In addition to RD credentialing, many states have regulatory laws for dietitians and nutrition practitioners. Frequently these state requirements are met through the same education and training required to become RD.
Reflection: I thought most individuals that I interviewed did fairly well at explaining and talking through the basics of what a RD does on a daily basis. I did notice a big difference between the individuals in the health field and their responses compared to individuals who do not work in a health field. The overall assumption that I got from a majority of people I interviewed was that RD s are telling people what to eat and how to lose weight and become healthier. In part that is true, however; RD s do so so much more than that and the majority of the time the people working in health fields understood that but the other individuals were missing that piece and I think these people may have benefited more from my handout than the others.
