Formerly known as the South Carolina Massage & Esthetics Institute, our new school name reflects our desire to reach beyond our own shores and embrace healing and beauty techniques from around the globe. Our serene Bluffton campus feels like home. The International Spa Institute seeks to blend Western methods backed by science with Eastern methods backed by hundreds, if not thousands, of years of experience. We have joined hands with like-minded individuals from around the world to help train the next generation of spa therapists in the practices of massage therapy, esthetics and spa modalities If you are ready for a career that is exciting, challenging and financially rewarding, you have come to the right place. MISSION Our mission is to support the learning and personal growth process of each student and provide courses of study which create successful, professional licensed massage therapists. CREDENTIALS The International Spa Institute is licensed as a post-secondary vocational school by the state of South Carolina for our massage program. 4 Page4 SEPTEMBER VOL. # 2 ISSUE #1 HISTORY 1998: Linda Beach, licensed massage therapist, moves from Florida to open the first campus of the South Carolina Massage Therapy Institute just minutes from downtown Columbia, the capital of the Palmetto State. 2000: A second campus was opened in the thriving coastal community of Myrtle Beach. 2003: An esthetics program was added and the school s name was changed to the South Carolina Massage & Esthetics Institute. 2003: The Columbia campus relocated to a 6,000 square foot two-story building, allowing each program to occupy its own floor. 2005: The third campus was opened in the town of Bluffton, just minutes from the pristine beaches of Hilton Head Island. This campus serves several communities in the Lowcountry including Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head and Savannah. 2009: Linda travels to Bali to learn Balinese massage and is enchanted by the island s kind, spiritual people and their healing-focused culture. Upon her return, Linda decides to expand the curriculum to include modalities and techniques from across the globe. 2010: The International Spa Institute, LLC is launched with the desire to not only bring talented instructors and eager students from around the world to our idyllic campus, but with the intention of taking students and therapists to other countries to learn new techniques at their source. 2011: Linda decides to downsize and focus on the campus nearest her home on Hilton Head Island. The charming Bluffton, SC campus now serves as the headquarters for the International Spa Institute, Spa Education Vacations, Island Bliss Mobile Spa and a myriad of other activities related to the spa industry. ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF Executive Director/Owner Linda Beach, LMT #1538 Linda was licensed as a massage therapist in 1992 and owned a successful private clinic in Florida where she specialized in medical massage for injury and pain management. Pursuing her dream to share her passion for the spa industry with others, Linda founded the Institute in In addition to teaching spa therapies & business practices to students and professionals alike, Linda is a freelance writer for spa industry publications and owner of a mobile massage business that caters to Lowcountry visitors. Her favorite activities involve being on, around or under the ocean. She loves to travel, scuba dive & ride her jet ski. Director of Sales & Marketing Jeff Byington After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1988, Jeff served his country as an Army officer for five years. His supervisory skills led him into sales in 1994, where he developed and managed diverse teams across the Southeast. A father of four red-headed boys, he enjoys relaxing on the beach, listening to local bands, working out, riding his bike and traveling. 14

5 Page5 SEPTEMBER VOL. # 2 ISSUE #1 LOCATION Our campus is conveniently located in downtown Bluffton, South Carolina, just minutes from the nature-lovers paradise of Hilton Head Island and a short drive from the historic towns of Beaufort and Savannah. Hardwood floors and high wood beam ceilings give the Institute the feeling of home. In addition to lecture and hands-on classrooms, there are three private treatment rooms for student practice sessions. A well-stocked retail store, kitchen, student lounge and relaxing outdoor seating complete the space. We provide everything you need to become a successful massage therapist, including an assortment of texts, journals, trade magazines and DVD s. Classrooms are outfitted with a computer, projector and color television in addition to top-of-the-line massage equipment. Our staff s offices are equipped with custom designed computer software that helps facilitate all aspects of administration. Student profiles, attendance, grade reports and other pertinent information are readily available. If you don t live in South Carolina but want to learn massage in paradise, we can assist you in finding the ideal living arrangement. We are also more than happy to help you with any paperwork requirements to become licensed in your home state or country. DAYS, TIMES & CLOCK HOURS Massage classes are offered both during the day and in the evening. Day classes run Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 am to 1 pm and take approximately six months to complete. Evening classes are held on Monday and Wednesday from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm and take a minimum of seven months to complete. Class size will remain such that individual attention will be stressed, with the student/teacher ratio for lectures not to exceed 1 teacher for every 16 students and hands-on instruction not to exceed 1 teacher for every 8 students. In describing our program, reference is made to the term clock hours. Curriculum in vocational schools is often described this way, rather than in terms of credit hours. A clock hour is one in which instruction takes place for at least 50 minutes of each hour. For directions to our campus, call

6 Page6 SEPTEMBER VOL. # 2 ISSUE #1 Upon meeting all of the requirements for graduation, a Certificate of Completion in Massage Therapy is granted and you will be eligible to take one of three state-approved exams: the National Certification Exam For Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork, the National Certification Exam For Therapeutic Massage, or the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Exam. After successfully passing the chosen exam, you may then apply for a license to practice massage in the state of South Carolina. The qualities we seek in our massage therapy students include: Eighteen years of age or older; High school diploma or GED; Promptness and professional appearance and attitude during contacts with the school; Absence of medical, behavioral or physical handicaps which might prevent. the candidate from successfully completing the training; Physically fit condition which enables the applicant to learn and practice massage therapy; Life experiences which have matured the candidate, enabling them to communicate positively to people of diverse populations; Financial stability and thoughtful consideration as to the cost of training and how they will budget for this additional expense; A US citizen or qualified alien or nonimmigrant lawfully present in the US; No convictions for crimes involving drugs or moral turpitude. 550-HOUR MASSAGE THERAPY PROGRAM Our curriculum has been designed to teach the art of massage therapy, while also teaching sound business practices which will prepare you for success in the marketplace. You will learn massage therapy theory and technique through traditional Swedish massage and deep tissue techniques. We will also explore numerous body therapies which will enhance your future massage therapy practice. From sports massage to medical massage to spa treatments, we continuously emphasize correct body mechanics and proper movement. In order for you to have a solid technical and scientific understanding and a way to communicate with other health care professionals, we teach anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, kinesiology, biomechanics, and pathology. The International Spa Institute not only prepares you to become a knowledgeable and effective massage therapist, but we ensure that the skills you need to become successful in the marketplace as a private practitioner, independent contractor, employee or entrepreneur are taught as well. Our graduates find they are equally comfortable in settings which emphasize prevention and stress reduction as they are in settings which focus on rehabilitation of soft tissue injuries or dysfunctions. 16

7 Page7 SEPTEMBER VOL. # 2 ISSUE #1 SCI-101: Introduction to Massage Therapy Sciences & Online Study Skills COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology & Pathology: 165 Clock Hours (40 Hours Pathology) Courses are broken down into subject matter as follows: This class will introduce students to our Essential Science for Therapeutic Massage textbook and corresponding online testing and study materials. We will review course materials and discuss goals, methods of instruction, communication, schedules, grading and assignments. Students will need to bring a laptop to this class. 4 Clock Hours Prerequisites: None SCI-1: Science for Massage Therapy; The Fundamentals We introduce the student to the body as a whole, the mechanisms of health and disease and medical terminology. Students will need to complete corresponding online science assignments and tests and pass an in-class final exam in order to complete all requirements. 36 Clock Hours Prerequisites: SCI-101 SCI-2: Science for Massage Therapy; The Systems of Control In this portion of science course, we cover nervous system basics and explore the peripheral and endocrine systems in detail. Students will need to complete corresponding online science assignments and tests and pass an in-class final exam in order to complete all requirements. 36 Clock Hours Prerequisites: SCI-101 SCI-3: Science for Massage Therapy; Support, Movement & Biomechanics The skeletal system, joints and muscles are studied in this module as well as their role in the biomechanics of the body. Students will need to complete corresponding online science assignments and tests and pass an inclass final exam in order to complete all requirements. 65 Clock Hours Prerequisites: SCI-101 SCI-4: Science for Massage Therapy; Remaining Body Systems The integumentary, cardiovascular, lymphatic and immune systems are covered in the first part of this course. The final section covers the respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive systems of the body. Students will need to complete corresponding online science assignments and tests and pass an in-class final exam in order to complete all requirements. 24 Clock Hours Prerequisites: SCI

8 Page8 SEPTEMBER VOL. # 2 ISSUE #1 SWE-1: Swedish Massage 1 We explore the art of massage therapy by applying Swedish strokes to the body. Students will learn draping for each body area and focus on proper body mechanics as they work around the table. Basic assessment skills and a full body routine are taught to prepare the students for practice on the public. Twenty 60-minute instructor supervised Student Spa sessions are required for this class. 70 Clock Hours Prerequisites: MT-101 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS Massage and Bodywork Ethics Theory, Assessment, Technique and Application 270 Clock Hours Massage and Bodywork Laws, Business, and Adjunctive Therapies 115 Clock Hours Courses are broken down into subject matter as follows: SWE-2: Swedish Massage 2 In this class, students will start to hone their kinesthetic skills and learn how to adapt massage to special populations. We cover the physiological effects of massage on the body and continue to explore ethics, boundaries and client communication. Twenty 60-minute instructor supervised Student Spa sessions are required for this class. 70 Clock Hours Prerequisites: SWE-1 MT-101: Intro to Massage Therapy This class introduces the student to basic anatomical terms and directions and the five Swedish strokes of effleurage, pettrisage, friction, tapotement and vibration. We cover the fundamental theories of massage, practice parameters, ethics, scope of practice, boundaries, table draping and proper body and hand mechanics. A 3-hour ISI orientation and 6 hours of ethics are included. 11 Clock Hours Prerequisites: None Blindfold massage hones kinesthetic skills. 18

9 Page9 SEPTEMBER VOL. # 2 ISSUE #1 DT-1: Deep Tissue 1 This class explores specific body areas in depth by correctly applying lengthening, broadening, stretching and myofascial techniques to the muscles. Students will gain experience with common injuries and pain patterns through assessment, palpation skills, range of motion testing, health history and postural analysis. DT-1 covers treatment approaches for injuries and dysfunctions of the neck and spine. Ten 60-minute instructor supervised Student Spa sessions are required for this class. 37 Clock Hours Prerequisites: MT-101 DT-2: Deep Tissue 2 Same as DT-1 but covers approaches for injuries and dysfunctions of the shoulder, arm and hand. Ten 60-minute instructor supervised Student Spa sessions are required for this class. 37 Clock Hours Prerequisites: MT-101 DT-3: Deep Tissue 3 Same as DT-1 but covers approaches for injuries and dysfunctions of the hip, leg and foot. Ten 60-minute instructor supervised Student Spa sessions are required for this class. 37 Clock Hours Prerequisites: MT-101 SPA-101: Intro to Student Spa Once students have taken Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue or Allied Modalities 2 and the instructor has approved them for practice on the public, Spa-101 is the next step. This class covers in detail the workings of our student spa and the student s role in procuring and managing clients in order to satisfy their Student Spa Internship requirements. Externship contracts and responsibilities are also covered. 8 Clock Hours Prerequisites: Per instructor Student Spa Internship In the Student Spa Internship, students develop professionalism by applying information they have learned in class and gain practical experience working with the public in a safe, supportive and supervised setting. In addition, the Internship allows massage and spa services to be experienced by people who would otherwise be unable to afford them. Students are given the opportunity to work on clients with a wide range of ages, cultural backgrounds and body types. Spa Internship responsibilities include marketing, client intake and communication, appointment confirmation, client check-in, and room set up and clean up. Students are required to provide a specific number of Swedish massages, deep tissue massages and spa treatments and will be directly supervised by an ISI instructor (see individual class requirements). 75 Treatment Hours Prerequisites: Per instructor Lots of hands-on practice. 19

10 Page10 SEPTEMBER VOL. # 2 ISSUE #1 AM-1: Allied Modalities 1 Chair massage event at Coligny Beach Park. Chair massage is one of the best marketing tools for any massage therapy practice as well as a viable stand-alone business model. In this class students learn a quick routine for promotional events and a longer routine for paying clients as well as marketing tips and potential venues for chair massage. 16 Clock Hours Prerequisites: None AM-2: Allied Modalities 2 Students create body art with mud. This class is devoted to an overview of the most popular massage and bodywork modalities which can complement a massage therapist's practice. These classes will help the student find direction within the field of massage therapy and will further allow them to develop a style truly their own. Students will explore the use of essential oils, mud and scrubs and create their own custom body treatments. Five 60-minute instructor supervised Student Spa sessions are required for this class. 34 Clock Hours Prerequisites: None Ear candeling is an ancient natural remedy, 110

11 Page11 SEPTEMBER VOL. # 2 ISSUE #1 B&L: Business & Law In our comprehensive business classes, we discuss the career opportunities available in this growing field, the pros and cons of each and methods of ensuring success in future business endeavors. We also explore record-keeping for tax and insurance purposes, time management, professionalism, business ethics, setting fees and policies, start up costs, resumes, business card design, marketing, advertising and public presentation. B&L: Business & Law Students are required to design a business plan as a final project. Ongoing support and consultation is offered after graduation to insure success in the business world. Community Service: The International Spa Institute is proud to schedule periodic events that require student participation to ensure success and good will. We will announce these events well in advance and allow students to sign up as their schedules permit. Most events are held on the weekend and most benefit a charitable organization. 15 Clock Hours Prerequisites: Per instructor Student Externship: Each student will be placed with an extern site of their choice at the direction of their instructor and after completing SPA-101. This opportunity to be of service in an area of interest will help direct the student and hone his or her massage skills. Students will be supervised by the on-site employer as well as ISI s Externship Supervisor. 30 Clock Hours Prerequisites: Per instructor In addition, we cover the laws governing massage therapy in the state of South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and other surrounding states. You will learn which testing options are prefered and how to transfer your license if you move out of state. 20 Clock Hours Prerequisites: None Graduates celebrating their accomplishments. 111

12 Page12 SEPTEMBER VOL. # 2 ISSUE #1 FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Financial responsibility is a necessary quality in undertaking any educational program and in succeeding in the business world. Some students plan ahead for their education and save money in order to pay for their training. Others ask family members to support them in this financial endeavor. PAYMENT PLANS Although the Institute does not offer grants or scholarships, we offer a Pay as You Study plan and a Low Down Payment, in-house financing plan. We are also approved providers for several programs, including the Military Spouse Career Advancement Account (MyCAA), Workforce Investment Act (WIA), Vocational Rehabilitation and Commission for the Blind. Please contact the Admissions Office for more information on our payment plans and other possible financing options. ADMISSIONS After you have reviewed this catalog, call the school and schedule an orientation meeting with the Campus Director. At this meeting, we will answer any questions you may have and provide a tour of the facilities. We will also be happy to schedule a time for you to sit in on any of our classes. To enrich your learning experience and introduce you to licensed professionals already practicing in your area, we require our students to receive a massage before commencing the program. Completing the Application is the next step in the admission process. Please take your time and answer all questions thoughtfully and honestly. Attach a copy of your high school transcript, diploma, or GED to the Application for Admission. Include your Massage Verification Form, a current photo, a check or money order for $100 and mail it or drop it off at the Institute. Two Letters of Recommendation will be sent directly to the school by an employer, health care professional or colleague. The final step in the Admissions process is to complete an Enrollment Agreement with the Campus Director. Several payment options are available and will be discussed in detail at this time. A professional massages is required prior to enrollment and generally runs between $50 and $100 depending on the facility. Textbooks can be purchased from the school prior to the beginning of classes or on orientation day. Lab fees include massage lubricants and a holster as well as other supplies used in class. A massage table is required but not included in the tuition price. However, we offer OakworksTM massage table packages at competitive rates as well as gently used massage tables and chairs when available. 14 Page14 SEPTEMBER VOL. # 2 ISSUE #1 TRANSFER CREDIT FOR PREVIOUS EDUCATION Students who have received prior training may apply for transfer credit. Transfer credit is awarded according to the following policies and procedures: Student must submit a certified transcript from a licensed and approved school. Student must submit a copy of the institutional catalog in effect at the time the class was taken, or if a catalog is not available, any other material showing a detailed description of the courses taken. Classes must parallel in content to the classes currently being offered at ISI as determined by the Campus Director or Executive Director. A minimum average grade of C+ (75%) must have been achieved in the transfer class. ISI reserves the right to test for competency in the transfer credit subject. There is a $10 fee for each subject tested. For any practical experience testing requiring an instructor, a rate of $25 per hour will apply. A transfer fee of $2 per clock hour transferred will apply. Note: ISI will transfer no more than 25% of the current total programs hours offered. If transfer credit is approved, the student may not be required to attend the class (or portion thereof) and will receive a tuition credit based on ISI s current tuition. Approved transfer credits are not used in the computation of grade point average, but are used in the determination of graduation requirements and of clock hours earned toward graduation. The International Spa Institute does not guarantee that credit earned will transfer to another institution. CONTINUING EDUCATION The International Spa Institute offers continuing education for licensed massage therapists in a number of massage therapy specialties and advanced modalities. All workshops will qualify for continuing education credits as required by the South Carolina Board of Massage Therapy and the National Certification Board for Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB). Some workshops will be available for student enrollment, but do not count as continuing education credits. As a student, you will however, earn clock hours and a Certificate of Completion for any advanced education workshop you attend. STUDENT POLICY HANDBOOK When you are ready to submit an application for our massage therapy program, you will be given a copy of our most recent Student Policy Handbook. This comprehensive guide outlines our campus policies and procedures, student guidelines, state laws relating to students, academic policies, dismissal policy and our Institute s code of ethics. The student policy handbook is a supplement to this catalog and you will be required to sign a document stating that you have received, read and understand the policies and procedures contained in the handbook. Any policy changes or amendments will be distributed to you in writing and require your signature of acknowledgement

15 Page15 SEPTEMBER VOL. # 2 ISSUE #1 THE FINAL STEPS Graduation Requirements: In order to graduate, the student must have received a passing grade in all classes, completed all assignments, passed all final exams, completed or made up all clock hours, paid all fees and tuition in full, returned all library books and other borrowed materials, and complied with all rules and regulations of the International Spa Institute. Licensure Exams: The massage therapy curriculum at the International Spa Institute is designed to prepare you to take any of the accepted licensing exams. The exams approved by LLR include: 1. The National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCETMB) 2. The National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage (NCETM) 3. Note: Licensure testing fees and any fees associated with obtaining a license to practice massage therapy in South Carolina or any other state are not included in the cost of the program at ISI. Massage Therapy Licensure: To qualify for a license to practice massage/bodywork in South Carolina, a person must: 1. be at least 18 years of age and have received a high school diploma or graduate equivalency diploma and; 2. have completed a 500-hour course, or more, of supervised study at an approved school and; 3. have received a passing grade on an approved examination. (Section , South Carolina Code of Laws, 1976, as amended (The Massage/Bodywork Practice Act, Act 387 of the 1996 General Assembly)). LLR accepts for licensing the tests of the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) and of the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) and; 4. be a US citizen or qualified alien or nonimmigrant lawfully present in the US and; 5. apply for a license to practice massage/bodywork at the SC Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR), Office of Business and Related Services, P.O. Box 11329, Columbia, SC ; telephone (803) , erapy/. Note: A conviction, guilty plea, or nolo contendere plea for a crime involving drugs, moral turpitude, or other criminal charges may prohibit licensure or employment. Graduates of the Massage Therapy program at the International Spa Institute are not eligible for South Carolina licensure as estheticians and may not advertise they are estheticians. 115

16 Page16 SEPTEMBER VOL. # 2 ISSUE #1 REFUND POLICY An applicant may cancel the Enrollment Agreement without penalty by notifying the Institute within three business days after signing the Agreement. Cancellation after the third business day, but before the first day of any class will result in a refund of all monies paid, with the exception of the $100 Application Fee. Cancellation after the first day of class, but prior to 60% completion of the entire 550-hour program, will result in a pro-rata refund; the refund is based on the percentage of time remaining in the program after the last date of class attended. This percentage is rounded down to the nearest ten percent. All refund requests must be made in writing, with a statement outlining the reason(s) for withdrawal. The Institute will refund eligible monies within forty days of cancellation or withdrawal. Refunds will be made on textbooks if they are returned within three weeks of purchase and in like-new condition. Any item purchased from the bookstore, except clearance or discontinued items, will be fully refunded if unopened and/or unused and accompanied by the original receipt. Items without a receipt can be exchanged for another item of equal value. The Application Fee is for a specific starting date and can only be transferred once to another starting date. The request to transfer the Application Fee must be submitted to the office in writing at least one week prior to the beginning of the class for which the student originally registered. Less than one week notice will require a new Application Fee for the new starting date (if the Institute has held the fee for more than three business days). Thank you for looking over our catalog.
