1 Florida Nursing Student Association November 2015 Volume 13, Issue 1 Hotline Hillsborough Community College, South Shore Campus: Brings much needed awareness of breast cancer to college students Hillsborough Community College, South Shore Campus brought some much needed education and attention to the issue of breast cancer. Many college students think that they are entirely too young to worry about Breast Cancer, or any cancer for that matter. While it is rare to find breast cancer in a 20-year old, the facts are that this does occur. SGA President, Tricia Blackburn planned this event with the Student Nurses Association in order to educate our students, and that is exactly what we succeeded in doing. We want our students to understand that just because you are in your teens and twenties, does not mean that you are immune from breast cancer and it s damaging effects to the mind, body, and spirit. HCC handed out 200 breast self exam pamphlets and raised $200 to go towards Breast Cancer Awareness. SNA President Shannon May says, We are a small campus, but we are a close family and I want my HCC family to know the early warning signs of breast cancer. It might not only save ourselves one day, we could also save someone else. Shannon May, Region 4 Director, NEC Chair Convention: Break Out of Your Shell Convention was a great success. There was 1300 nursing students that attended from many different nursing programs throughout the state of Florida. The school pride and comradery of the nursing students was raised to a new level. Meeting other fellow nursing student and making new friends was such a great experience. This convention had great speakers that included: Miss Colorado Kelly Johnson, Keynote speaker Marcus Engel, Mike Linares, Geraldine Martinez and many more. This year all eight resolutions authored by nursing students were passed in the House of Delegate. The new FNSA board was elected and the Masquerade party was a blast. Rocking the night away with Miss Colorado and Miss Florida.
