6 Department Profile The Department of Primary Education at the University of Western Macedonia was established in 1989 as a branch of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and transferred to the new University of Western Macedonia since The under-graduate program leads after eight (8) semesters to the primary teacher diploma. Its curriculum includes a number of objectives that focus on scientific knowledge and skills in the areas of general and special education. It offers several courses on Special and Inclusive Education, Learning Disabilities, Assessment and Intervention in Learning Disabilities and Behaviour Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities and Developmental Disabilities at graduate and post-graduate level, and also covers issues such as the philosophical and sociological approaches to disability, politics of special education, programmes and services in special and inclusive education, cognitive approaches to reading and writing difficulties, in-service education teacher training, e.t.c. During these courses yearly research projects are contacted where students take part. The results are usually presented at the end of the academic year in Conferences.
