10 Course Levels Chichester College teaches English across the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). This outline of levels was designed as a framework of reference to guide teachers and students through the assessment of language proficiency. LEVEL CHICHESTER COLLEGE LEVEL DESCRIPTION EXAMPLE EXAM A1 ELEMENTARY Student can understand familiar daily and useful expressions as well as basic phrases. Student can interact with another answering by introducing themselves and asking and answering basic questions as long as the other person speaks slowly and clearly. Anglia Preliminary A2 PRE INTERMEDIATE Student can communicate and understand simple sentences and expressions. Student can also describe simple events, environment around them and aspects of their background to another. Anglia Elementary & PreIntermediate B1 INTERMEDIATE Student can understand familiar matters in regular daily life as well as being able to create simple sentences describing experience, events and personal opinions. Anglia Intermediate Cambridge English PET B2 UPPER INTERMEDIATE Student can understand more complex text and is able to communicate with a degree of fluency and explain their viewpoints on an array of topics. Anglia Advanced Cambridge English FCE C1 ADVANCED Student can understand more complicated and longer texts as well and express themselves fluently and produce clear and complex sentences. 13 Afternoon Options for General English 25 Afternoon Options for General English 25 Students taking the General English 25 course can chose from the following afternoon options* Skills The Skills option is designed to take the grammar and vocabulary you have learned and bring it to life in a communicative classroom environment. The four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing will be developed through a wide variety of tasks and activities that put the student at the centre of the learning process. As well as practising the four skills, you will be supported and corrected where appropriate on the accuracy of your English. By the end of the course you should be a more fluent, accurate and confident user of English. Speaking Pronunciation, vocabulary and rhythmic patterns are all aspects of learning how to communicate. Listening The ability to listen and understand what you hear is an important objective to language fluency. Reading Reading skills can help students better understand and advance their English communication. Reading helps students better understand grammar, key words and sentence structure. Writing This class will help you improve your writing through formal and informal writing sessions. Business Exam Preparation The Business option aims to provide an introduction to Business English. This option is for students who plan to study the subject further or who want to improve communication skills in the workplace. The Business option focuses on vocabulary and the daytoday language of business at work covering meetings, negotiations, telephoning and written communications. Main topics incude: types of business, marketing and promotions, and telephone etiquette, job searching and creating a CV. Exam Preparation classes include PET, FCE, CAE, CPE and IELTS examinations. The classes will familiarise you with the structure of your exam. You will learn exam techniques alongside the grammar, vocabulary and the skills needed to be successful. 14 Cambridge English Preliminary English Test (PET) Exam Preparation Course: Cambridge English Preliminary English Test (PET) Exam Preparation Duration: 23 Hours per week Cambridge English Preliminary English Test (PET) Exam Preparation This course is for students wanting to take the Cambridge ESOL Preliminary English Test (PET). Studying for the PET exam is a very popular way to improve your English. It helps with your Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The PET exam is used by many people to help them in their career. It is for students studying at level B1 or Chichester College s Intermediate level. This popular exam is widely recognised in commerce and industry, as well as by many Colleges and other institutions. The FCE exam preparation course will prepare students for the FCE examination through focused learning and exam question preparation. The course will familiarise you with the different papers of the exam. It will provide all of the Grammar and Vocabulary you need as well as preparation for Speaking, Listening, reading Writing and Use of English. This extremely demanding examination tests students proficiency and full understanding of the English language. This examination preparation course aims to develop highlevel language skills and fully prepare students for the intensity of the CPE examination. It is for students who are operating at an extremely high level of English. Students taking this preparation course are usually studying at C2 level or Chichester College s Proficiency level. 18 IELTS Exam Preparation Course: IELTS Exam Preparation Duration: 23 hours per week 4 weeks International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Exam Preparation The IELTS examination, which stands for the International English Language Testing System, is one of the most popular and recognised English examinations for education and employment. The IETS test is used to assess the language proficiency of students from a nonenglish language speaking background who want to live and study in an Englishspeaking country. The listening and speaking components are the same for all candidates, but the reading and writing sections of the IELTS are available in two different modules, Academic and General. This course aims to give students advice and practice in all the skills that are needed for the exam. This course is designed for students aiming for results of 5.5 to 6.5, CEFR level B2 or Chichester College s Upper Intermediate level. This course is for students preparing for the Anglia Advanced and Proficiency levels or Chichester College Upper Intermediate and Advanced levels. 20 Summer School Adults 16+ Course: Summer School Adults Duration: 25 hours per week 27 weeks Summer School Adults Summer school courses are a great way to develop English, take optional courses and enjoy student life in the UK. There is a strong emphasis on English for communication. Students are able to make friends with people from many different countries as well as experience British culture first hand. This programme has six different levels of the Common European Framework of Reference. Every student is given an initial assessment and then placed on a course at the appropriate level. Students can chose from afternoon options of Skills, Business, PET, FCE, CAE, CPE, or IELTS exam preparation. 21 Summer School Juniors 1215 Course: Summer School Juniors Duration: 25 hours per week 25 weeks Summer School Juniors Summer school courses are a safe, supervised and fun way for Juniors to improve their English and enjoy their Summer break. With lots of activities and excursions, students are able to see the sights of London and other cities while also experiencing life in the UK. The International department organises a complete social programme for all Juniors alongside General English classes in the morning. Classes are aimed at improving students communication abilities and are appropriate for a range of English levels. With accommodation and meals included with the College s on campus housing and catering facilities, students get a complete Summer experience. 22 English + Work Placement Course: English + Work Experience English and Work Experience The English & Work Experience course is an excellent way to use your English in the real world and gain valuable work experience. Alongside your English, we help you prepare a CV, apply for placements and prepare for your interview. Placements are available in Chichester and the surrounding area or in London. For students taking placements in London we can also help arrange accommodation. Local placements Chichester placements are arranged by Chichester College s Positive About Futures Team. You can stay in our Westgate Hall of Residence during the time of your placement. The Positive About Futures team are responsible for running careers activities both in college and on site in local schools and other venues. Positive About Futures offers a bright, fresh and contemporary service designed to inspire, motivate and inform young people about their career choices. 25 Social Programme Social programme Summer School Things to do in Chichester The international department organises a social programme for students to enjoy. With events like bowling, visiting Windsor Castle or seeing Stonehenge, students will have plenty to see and do whilst making new friends. With a specialised Summer School social programme including a welcome and leaving party as well as trips to places such as Bath or Brighton beach, Summer students can enjoy the British summer as well and meet other students from all over the world. The College s location is very close to the city centre which can be reached in just a few minutes on foot. 26 Accommodation Stockbridge 18+ Stockbridge Chichester College is delighted to unveil this brand new build of over 300 bed spaces in a purpose built site offcampus. Stockbridge offers selfcatering halls of residence for students who are 18 years old or older upon arrival. The accommodation is fully managed by Chichester College and College staff and has 2 blocks allocated to Chichester University students. Laundry facilities are onsite. Students are responsible for their own room and ensuite facilities.in line with the opening of the residence halls the College has an improved internet service for students in all residences. There is a support line, and a fast broadband package included in the fees. There are shared kitchen facilities in the flats which accommodate between 5 and 7 students in each one. Full board is available upon request. Communal areas are cleaned daily and kitchens are cleaned weekly. There is a member of staff on duty 24 hours, 7 days per week not only for the safety and security of the students but also to answer any questions students may have during their stay at Chicheser College. The residence provides excellent living accommodation and has the feel of a student village in its own grounds only 5 minutes walk away from the Chichester College campus. 26 Web

27 Accommodation Westgate 18+ Westgate Westgate Halls are for students who are 18 and over at time of admission. Westgate has superb selfcatering or full board student accommodation for 160 residents. All rooms are single and ensuite with some having been specifically designed to meet the needs of disabled students. There are shared kitchen facilities in the flats which accommodate 6 students. There are a variety of communal facilities including: Communal common room with TV and DVD, plus food and drink vending machines, A bed pack containing a duvet, pillows and bed linen may be purchased from Westgate upon arrival. Cooking utensils, crockery and bedding are not provided this must be provided by the student. Selfcatering and full board are both available so please advise when applying. Kitchen and communal areas are cleaned daily. Students are responsible for the cleaning of their own room and ensuite facilities. Westgate Halls of Residence is a secure and safe building with a swipe card entry system for each block, flat and individual room. Westgate hall of residence is open over holiday periods meaning that student residents of the hall can stay in Westgate over holiday periods. 27 Web

28 Accommodation Woodlands Woodlands Woodlands provides secure accommodation for 90 students from September 2014 between 1618yrs old at the time of admission. This oncampus student accommodation comprises single and twinbedded study bedrooms, some of which are ensuite. Shower and toilet facilities are situated on each floor of the 1618yrs old accommodation. During summer months, Woodlands will be available for students aged 1217 yrs. Woodlands has two common rooms and a reception area, large, widescreen TVs, pool tables, table tennis table, Xbox & Wii, karaoke equipment and it is wifi enabled. Woodlands has its own cleaning and laundry staff and two laundry rooms with card operated machines for students. Woodlands hall of residence provides catering to residents on a fullboard basis which is included in the accommodation price. Woodlands is staffed 24 hours a day by trained supervisors. All communal corridors have been fitted with CCTV to create a positive and safe environment for all students. Student privacy remains a priority and there is a clear CCTV policy to ensure this. Woodlands students all attend one study session per week. This is designed to encourage and assist the achievement of all of our students. 28 Web

29 Accommodation Homestay 16+ Homestay Homestay is ideal for short stay students who want to experience the traditional experience of living with a local family. Homestay means that you will live in a house with the owner and family. This accommodation is available to all students on full time courses. Students in Homestay accommodation can specify whether they wish to be in a smoking or nonsmoking household. Students may also specify whether they wish to be in student Homestay accommodation with or without pets or children. Half Board Half Board Homestay accommodation means that you live in a house with the owner and family having your breakfast and evening meal provided during the week and at the weekend, breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided. Students share the facilities in the house with the rest of the occupants of the home. Laundry is included once a week in the price of your accommodation. Any extra laundry should be discussed with your Homestay. Self Catering Selfcatering Homestay accommodation means that you live in a house with the owner and family having the freedom of cooking for yourself. This student Homestay accommodation is available to all students over 17 years old, on a fulltime course. You will share the facilities in the house you stay in with the rest of the occupants. Please get an application form from our website and complete it in full. Then it back to us with the following: A copy of your passport, your academic qualifications, evidence of your level of English e.g. IELTS certificate and your deposit. 3. College Offer 4. VISA On receipt of all of the above we will send you a letter of acceptance confirming your place on the course and provide UK accommodation reservation details if requested. If you have sent your deposit and met the entry requirements for your course the acceptance will be Unconditional. We will provide supporting documents you can use to apply for your student visa. When you have been accepted at Chichester College we will provide you with a CAS number and the relevant documents you need for a visa application. Our College complies fully with the UKV&I (UK Visa & Immigration) guidelines for UK student visas. On their website you will be able to find out whether a UK student visa is applicable to you. 5. Payment You can pay your fees via our online PayToStudy programme or directly to the College via a transfer. College admission staff will advise you when you payment is due and how best to pay. 6. Prearrival Inform the College when your visa is issued and confirm your arrival date and time. If you require a taxi transfer from the airport this can be arranged at an additional cost.
