5 1 Introduction This handbook aims to provide students with important information needed for the Diploma in General Studies (DipGS) programme. It should be read carefully and kept for reference throughout your period of study. The Diploma in General Studies programme you have chosen is one of the many high quality programmes offered by the Community College of City University (CCCU). CCCU is the successor to the College of Higher Vocational Studies which, continuing the mission of the University, took over responsibility for all sub-degree programmes in The Community College of City University aspires to be internationally recognized as a premier community college in the Hong Kong SAR and the region. Anticipating and responding to local and regional needs as well as to rapid social change, CCCU aims to provide a vibrant learning environment to enhance the whole person development of its students. There are five academic units in the College, namely, the Divisions of Applied Science and Technology, Business, Languages and Communication, Social Sciences, as well as the Centre for Lifelong Learning. Together they offer a wide and expanding range of Associate Degree and Diploma Programmes for the benefit of the Hong Kong SAR and the wider region. As the Diploma in General Studies is not a University Award, the City University resources are generally not available to students unless special arrangement is made through CCCU. DipGS
6 2 Studying At CCCU Congratulations! You made the right decision to study this high quality programme at CCCU offered by the Division of Business. Our primary objective is to assist you to obtain an excellent education in order to achieve your academic, career and life goals. Success is achieved only through your personal commitment and dedication. You are probably coming to CCCU from an educational background where the teacher transmitted information and you were expected to learn and then repeat this information in the coursework and examination. This is not how learning takes place at CCCU. On the contrary, we expect and encourage you to think critically and then discuss and debate with your peers and teachers. Students who perform well are those who study the relevant topics, think critically about their findings, discuss and debate them, and then construct their own valid perspective. 7 3 Communication Channels between Staff & Students Students who experience any kind of academic difficulties with a course should first speak directly to the tutor and/or lecturer responsible for that course. Students wishing to discuss the content and organization of the programme should speak to the Programme Leader. For general enquiries or a referral to specific tutors or staff, you can call The Programme Committee is responsible for the academic development and maintenance of the quality of the programme. Student representatives will be elected by students to sit on this committee. In this way, you too play an active role in helping us to deliver quality programmes. In addition, every semester, you will have the opportunity to evaluate the quality of teaching and learning experience by completing an online teaching and learning questionnaire. We are committed to equal access to facilities, fair practice, respect and courtesy. It is our belief that the best way to meet your needs is to improve the communication between students and academic/administrative staff. 9 4 Programme Aims and Intended Learning Outcomes 4.1 AIMS This programme aims to provide students with the generic knowledge and skills required to articulate into sub-degree programmes such as Associate Degree (AD) and Higher Diploma (HD). It intends to enhance the learners language proficiency in both English and Chinese, quantitative reasoning, basic IT and workplace communication skills, as well as to develop a greater appreciation and awareness of the socio-economic environment of Hong Kong. The programme serves to provide a foundation for the development of intellectual abilities, learning attitudes and problem solving skills for life-long learning. 4.2 PROGRAMME INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (PILOS) Upon successful completion of this programme, students should be able to: I. Communicate effectively in English and Chinese, both written and oral, using appropriate structure and style, and II. Apply a range of information technology, numeracy and quantitative skills in processing and collating data and information; and III. Apply appropriate presentation and communication skills for academic purpose or at the workplace; and IV. Demonstrate basic understanding of the socioeconomic environment of Hong Kong; and V. Work in teams, accept individual responsibilities and respect diversity. DipGS
10 5 Programme Entrance Requirement and Structure 5.1 PROGRAMME ENTRANCE REQUIREMENT To be eligible for admission, an applicant must satisfy any one of the following programme entrance requirements: Achieved total score of at least 6* in five best subjects of the HKDSE; or Completing an IB curriculum or other secondary qualifications awarded overseas; or Other equivalent qualifications. (*HKDSE Levels 1 to 5 are converted into scores 1 to 5 respectively.) 5.2 PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The programme covers eleven courses with 33 credit units. Six courses will be delivered in Semester A and five courses in Semester B. Each semester consists of 14 teaching weeks, 2 revision weeks and 1 examination week. 5.3 MODE OF ATTENDANCE One-year Full-time 6 DipGS

13 6.2 COURSE DESCRIPTION Effective English I DIGS001 This course aims to help students who have completed their secondary studies to build a stronger foundation in English reading, writing, speaking and listening abilities. Using an integrated approach to all four skills, students will be immersed in learning activities which consolidate and further develop what they have learnt in secondary school. This will lay a firm base for both their future studies and employment. Effective English II DIGS002 This course aims to help students who have completed Effective English I to build a stronger foundation in English. Using an integrated approach, students will be immersed in learning activities to consolidate and further develop what they have learned. The course focuses on developing students reading and writing abilities, while incorporating listening and speaking features in preparation for study at AD level. Effective English III DIGS003 This course aims to help students who have completed Effective English I to embark on AD studies with a good foundation in English. Using an integrated approach, students will be immersed in learning activities to consolidate and further develop what they have learnt. The course focuses on developing students listening and speaking abilities, while incorporating reading and writing features. Foundation Chinese I DIGS011 This course aims at enhancing the knowledge of modern Chinese language for communication and developing students practical writing skills needed in the workplace which can lay a solid foundation for future study and employment. Foundation Chinese II DIGS012 This course aims at strengthening students reading and writing skills of Chinese language by studying various forms of literary works and enhancing the oral communication skills in the workplace environment for effective communication. Mathematics DIGS031 This course aims to prepare students with the requisite quantitative skills to pursue further study at tertiary level in various disciplines. DipGS
14 Fundamentals of Quantitative Methods DIGS032 This course aims to introduce basic quantitative methods and skills required for application to business and non-business contexts and thereby prepare students for undertaking further study at territory level. Basic IT Skills DIGS041 This course aims to provide a basic grounding in information technology (IT) skills by introducing fundamental IT concepts and providing hands-on experience in PC applications and and the use of social media. This course will also instill a sense of social awareness and responsible behavior in the digital age. Analytical Thinking and Study Skills DIGS051 The course aims to develop students knowledge and application of effective study and analytical thinking strategies and skills to enable them to take control of their learning and pursue further study at tertiary level. Hong Kong Economy DIGS052 This course aims to introduce students to the salient features of the economy of Hong Kong by equipping them with the basic knowledge of the historical development, current issues and key policies. It also aids students to understand the role of Hong Kong as an international business, trade and financial hub in the context of its political, legal and social systems. Intra- and Interpersonal Skills DIGS053 This course equips students with the fundamental skills and knowledge for better selfunderstanding and to manage interpersonal interactions. It also enables them to effectively build relationships with diverse others by employing appropriate interpersonal skills and etiquettes. It is expected that students self-understanding and people skills can be enhanced. Food and Health CGE13204 The course aims to develop students understanding of the key elements in human nutrition and their impact on health and lives. It provides them with a better understanding of the relationship between nutrients and health. Students will be able to understand causes of food-borne illnesses and diet management. Global issues like food shortages and genetically modified food will also be covered and discussed. Practical Psychology for Everyday Life CGE14402 This course aims at enhancing students self-awareness of his / her behaviour patterns, particularly when interacting with others. Through an activity approach, students can gain insight into the different processes involved in social interactions. 10 DipGS
15 7 Assessment, Progression and Award 7.1 TEACHING METHODS, ASSESSMENT POLICY AND METHODS Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, seminars, resource-based learning, project and group work The assessment system for student performance consists of a combination of assessments in coursework and examination Coursework assessment is based on the students performance in quizzes, projects, written assignments, and participation in classes, tutorials, and laboratories, and other forms of assignments as the Course Examiner sees fit Students are expected to attend all lectures, tutorials, workshops, laboratories, and other activities of respective courses. Failure to do so may lead to failure in respective courses. For absence due to illness for two days or more, a doctor s medical consultation slip is needed. For absence due to other valid reasons, students should properly notify Division of Business by informing the clerical officer on duty through or phone call, and students are also encouraged to seek advice from the progamme leader concerned. In order to obtain a passing grade, students are required to attend at least 80% of tutorials and workshops, and to obtain a minimum mark of 30% in both coursework and examination for courses that have an examination component in assessment The Community College of City University s Academic Regulations will be applied to assessment, grading, classification of awards, retrieval of failures, appeal and other aspects where appropriate. 16 7.2 ASSESSMENT Assessment will be made based on the Grade Point Average (GPA) calculated for each course and the cumulative GPA (CGPA) for the final award. Students assigned grade D or above earn credit units for the course. Grades of F, IP, I or X do not bear credit units. Grades of I, IP and X are not counted in the calculation of a student s Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) or Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA). 17 CGPA is calculated for courses taken during enrolment for a specific programme, i = 1-n, where n represents all courses completed at the time of calculation, unless excluded under The Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) is calculated for all the courses taken in one semester, including failed courses, but excluding courses graded I, IP or X Where a student s SGPA falls below 1.7, the student will be issued an academic warning Where the student s record indicates that the student may have great difficulty in completing the requirements for the DipGS award, the Examination Board will consider terminating the student s studies. 7.3 CLASSIFICATION OF AWARDS The Examination Board shall decide on the classification of awards based on the students performance in the courses: Award Distinction Credit Pass In order to be awarded the Diploma in General Studies of the Community College of City University, students have to pass all the core and elective subjects and achieve an overall attendance of 80%. A minimum mark of 30% for both the coursework and examination components are required where there is an examination component in the course assessment. In addition, a pass in the intensive language courses is required for students who are required to take them Students have to achieve a Graduation Grade Point Average of at least 1.7 for the award. 18 8 Articulation to Associate Degree Graduates of the Diploma in General Studies programme are eligible to apply for admission to Associate Degree programmes offered by CCCU*. Those with notable results may be considered, on a case-by-case basis, for admission to the CCCU Associate Degree programmes. Upon successful completion of CCCU Associate Degree programme, students can apply for admission to relevant CityU degree programmes. In addition, top-up degree programmes by overseas universities offered through CCCU (or CityU) provide another attractive pathway to degree level studies. * except Associate of Social Science in Social Work 14 DipGS
19 9 Fees and Charges 9.1 TUITION FEE The programme fee is HK$36,000, to be paid in two installments: 1 st installment: HK$18,000 2 nd installment: HK$18, The normal study period for this programme is one academic year on a full-time basis An extra fee will be charged to students extending their study over the normal study period. 9.2 PAYMENT OF TUITION FEE A student who enrolls in the Community College of City University incurs a financial obligation to the College. Students will receive statements of account from CCCU, each with a specified due date. It is a student s responsibility to observe the due date for fee payments, and to notify CCCU in case he/she does not receive any statement of account 10 days before the due date. If a student does not wish to continue to study, he/she should formally withdraw from the College before the semester starts A student who has financial difficulties and cannot settle the tuition by the payment deadline may submit an application for deferral of tuition payment at least 5 working days before the payment deadline. Late applications will only be considered under exceptional circumstances, and may lead to a penalty charge. DipGS
20 9.2.3 Students who apply for deferral of tuition payment should submit the application form in person to the College Office: General Office, Rm 211, Telford Annex Telford Plaza, Kowloon Bay. Online application forms are available at the following link: Approval for deferral of tuition will be granted on the basis of genuine financial need. Students must submit all relevant supporting documents (e.g. Evidence of the application for Student Financial Assistance in process, etc.) together with the payment deferral application form. Applications without adequate supporting document will not be processed. Students may be invited to attend an interview if necessary If a student does not pay the fee by the due date without following the aforementioned procedures, his/her student status will be withdrawn from all registered courses at the CCCU Students who do not pay the fees and charges in full by the payment due date may have their studies terminated by the College. 9.3 OTHER FEES & CHARGES Application for Transcript/Certificate Certified True Copy of Transcript/Certificate Replacement of Student ID Card Graduation Fee HK$50 per copy* HK$30 per copy HK$100 per card HK$400 per person * One free copy will be given to students at the end of the academic year. 21 10 Programme Management 10.1 EXTERNAL ACADEMIC ADVISOR The programme will have an external academic advisor to provide professional input and to assist in the monitoring of the quality of the programme PROGRAMME COMMITTEE The Diploma in General Studies Programme is monitored by a Programme Committee which comprises the Division Head, Progeamme Leader, Course Examiners, student representatives and other relevant staff. The Programme Committee meets annually and is responsible for the maintenance of the quality of the programme to ensure the attainment of its aims and learning outcomes THE STAFF-STUDENT CONSULTATIVE COMMITTEE Different mechanisms are in place for DipGS students to voice their concerns and suggestions. An important formal communication channel for students to provide feedback on the programme is the Joint Staff-Student Consultative Committee. This committee will meet once per semester. Student representatives will be invited to attend the Staff-Student Consultative Committee (SSCC) Meeting. Class representatives will be selected to attend the SSCC. Students are encouraged to give feedback on respective courses/classes they are attending through their class representatives in the SSCC. Students are also welcome to discuss with relevant academic staff informally to voice their suggestions and concerns about the programme. DipGS
22 11 Student Conduct and Behavior 11.1 BASIC PRINCIPLES The Community College of City University expects good conduct from all students in both academic matters and general behavior. You are expected to treat all other students and members of the University community with honesty, respect and act in good faith. For instance, as a matter of general courtesy and in order not to disturb others, you should observe classroom rules and switch off your mobile phones or pagers during class. You need to observe the Code of Student Conduct (see Section 11.3) and other rules and regulations which are crucial in making the CCCU an excellent place for learning ACADEMIC HONESTY You must pursue your studies with academic honesty, which is central to the conduct of academic work. You are expected to present your own work, give proper acknowledgement of other s work, and honestly report findings obtained. Students who commit an act of academic dishonesty which jeopardizes the integrity of the learning and assessment process may be liable to disciplinary actions. The following are examples of dishonest academic behavior: plagiarism -- plagiarism means the representation of another person s work as the student s own, without proper acknowledgement of the source. Plagiarism is a serious academic offence which may lead to the termination of study and other heavy penalties; submission for assessment of material that is not the student s own work; misrepresentation of a piece of group work as the student s own individual work; 18 DipGS
23 collusion, i.e. obtaining assistance in doing work which is meant to be solely the student s own work; unauthorized access to an examination/test paper; use of unauthorized material in assessment; communication of unauthorized information during assessment; use of fabricated data claimed to be obtained by experimental work, or data copies or obtained by unfair means; impersonation of another student at a test or an examination, and/or allowing oneself to be impersonated. If a student attempts to gain an advantage in the assessment of his/her work by fraudulent means, it shall be regarded as a breach of assessment regulations, or a case of cheating. The student will be told that the matter will be reported to the College. On receipt of any allegation of cheating, the case will be referred to the Programme Committee for investigation. The Disciplinary Procedures in the Code of Student Conduct will be followed. The case will be referred to the Academic Board. For disciplinary problems, the case will first be considered by the Programme Committee and, upon its recommendation, a Disciplinary Board will be set up to resolve the matter. When an allegation of cheating has been substantiated, the Academic Board shall disregard the performance of the student in the particular course in which the cheating took place and shall award a zero mark for the whole course CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCT The College expects students to behave honestly, honorably, and sensibly. This Code of Student Conduct is therefore intended to focus more on supporting good and responsible behavior and less on the penal aspect of improper behavior. The implementation of the Code will attempt to reflect this intention. DipGS
24 Students must be law-abiding citizens and are required to conduct themselves in an honest, mature and responsible manner at all times. If they are convicted of a violation of law, the College will consider taking appropriate action against them, depending on the seriousness of the offence Students must pursue their studies with academic honesty. Academic honesty is central to the conduct of academic work. Students are expected to present their own work, give proper acknowledgement of the work of others, and honestly report findings obtained Students must comply with examination regulations promulgated by the Community College of City University Students must comply with the College regulations on fees, charges and financial assistance Students must comply with the regulations promulgated by the various amenities and facilities providers Students must refrain from conduct which may pose a health or safety hazard to others Students must refrain from conduct which may disturb the peace or the normal functioning of the College Students must refrain from conduct which may result in physical abuse to people or cause another person a fear of bodily harm Students must use the College s premises, facilities and amenities only for purposes for which they are specifically provided Students must refrain from conduct which may result in the misuse, removal of or damage to property not of their own. 20 DipGS
25 Students should help to keep all parts of the campus clean and tidy. Students may put up notices or posters only on notice boards provided for students use Students should report all accidents and emergencies immediately to a member of staff of the relevant unit or the CCCU officer stationed in the centre Students who undertake external visits must behave in a disciplined and responsible manner and obey the rules of the organization which they are visiting or attending. Safety precautions specified by the organization must be followed Students using the facilities of other universities and organizations, e.g. research or laboratory facilities, or library or sport facilities, must behave in a disciplined and responsible manner and obey the rules of the host organization Students or student societies who wish to engage in any activity in the name of the College should obtain prior written permission Students must refrain from conducting themselves in a manner which may result in damaging the College s image or reputation The College has established policies, e.g. the policy statement on equal opportunities, sexual harassment, personal data (privacy) issues, etc. in support of ordinances in Hong Kong SAR which accord rights to individuals in various aspects. As members of the College, students will have their respective rights protected by these policies and are expected at the same time to adhere to the principles and requirements of these policies Failure to comply with this Code or with other regulations of the College may result in disciplinary action against the student concerned. 26 11.4 PROCEDURE FOR COURSE GRADE APPEALS A student may appeal for a course grade review by writing to CCCU. The application for an appeal will only be processed if it relates to either: New evidence which for good reason had not been presented previously to the Programme Committee as the case may be; or A material irregularity of proceedings in the consideration of the matter by the Programme Committee. A decision on an appeal will normally be made within one month of the announcement of grades from the date of receipt of the application, and the decision will be final. The College will keep a written, confidential record of the proceedings of all cases of appeal YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES At CCCU, you are expected to attend class regularly and punctually, hand in your assignments on time, and participate in group activities. But that is not enough. You must prepare to improve your skills and knowledge on your own, outside the classroom, laboratory and tutorial. In between classes, you can work in the Telford Library, to read, to revise, to discuss a topic with your classmates, or to view non-print materials, such as VCD or DVD. You must READ regularly throughout your study at CCCU. Reading helps you broaden your knowledge about people, places, events and ideas. When you come across a term or reference which you do not know, you should look it up in a dictionary or encyclopedia, or ask one of your teachers to explain it to you. 22 DipGS
27 12 Financial Assistance Students enrolled in the DipGS Programme offered by CCCU are eligible to apply for financial assistance schemes administered by Government s Student Financial Assistance Agency (SFAA). 28 13 Sexual Harassment Under the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (Cap. 480, Laws of Hong Kong), sexual harassment is unlawful. The College is committed to providing a workplace and a learning environment that is free from sexual harassment, and will not condone any act of sexual harassment committed by its staff members or students. Sexual harassment is a breach to staff and student discipline and shall be subject to disciplinary action according to the Staff Code of Conduct, the Regulations Governing Staff Discipline, and the Code of Student Conduct and Disciplinary Procedure respectively.
