Views from Living Marine Resources Management and the Coral Triangle Project Annadel Salvio Cabanban Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management Specialist, Coral Triangle Initiative Southeast Asia Project: Strengthening Coastal and Marine Resources Management

Scope of Presentation Brief background of the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (CTI CFF) 9 Principles of CTI CFF 5 Goals Furthering management of international waters

Coral Reef Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security Scaled-up from the Ecoregion Conservation Plan for the Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion (1986, WWF) Catalyzed by World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF, 2006) Adopted by Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste (CT6; 2009)

CTI CFF Area of Implementation (insert map of Coral Triangle)

Caveat The scope of application of the CTI is without prejudice to the sovereign rights of the parties over marine resources within national jurisdiction, or the position of the parties on delimitation of maritime boundaries between States with opposite or adjacent coasts. The geographic scope of implementation of the CTI is not intended in any way to redraw the scientific boundaries of the Coral Triangle, which would continue to be defined by coral and coral reef fish diversity.

CTI supported by GEF Global Environment Facility (GEF) provided direct support under the Coral Triangle Program GEF supported management in the South China Sea LME GEF support in the South China Sea: Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis; Strategic Action Plan (SAP) formulation; SAP implementation (under consideration); numerous projects

Views on Marine Resource Management: 9 Principles Principle # 1: people-centred biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, povertyreduction and equitable benefit-sharing Principle # 2: based on solid science Principle # 3:- centred on quantitative goals and time-tables adopted by governments Principle # 4: use existing and future forums to promote implementation

Views on Marine Resource Management: 9 Principles (cont d.) Principle # 6:... recognize transboundary nature of some important marine natural resources Principle # 7: emphasize priority geographies Principle # 8: inclusive and engage multiple stakeholders Principle # 9: recognize the uniqueness, fragility, and vulnerability of island ecosystems From: Regional Plan of Action: Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security (June 2009);

5 Goals of the Coral Triangle Initiative Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security Goal 1 Priority Seascapes Identified and Effectively Managed Goal 2 Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management fully-applied Goal 3 Marine Protected Areas Established and effectively Managed Goal 4 Climate Change Adaptation Measures Achieved Goal 5 Threatened Species Status Improving
