2 Coral Diversity of the World C T Coral Triangle is the most diverse reef species Area in the World 2

3 C T Over 75% of all known coral species on Earth; 53% of the world s coral species, around 600 species Over 3,000 fish species The greatest extent of mangrove forests of any region in the world ; and Spawning and juvenile growth areas for what is the largest tuna fishery in the world Generating economy of US$2.3 Billion/Yr 3

4 Definition of Coral Triangle (CT) area. Indonesia (Central and Eastern), East Timor, the Philippines, Malaysia (Sabah), Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Coral Triangle: richest marine life on the planet. The CT, sometimes referred to as the Amazon of the Seas, is the epicenter of marine life abundance and diversity on the planet. In some areas, it has more than 600 coral species (more than 75% of all known coral species), 53% of the world s coral reefs, 3,000 fish species, and the greatest extent of mangrove forests of any region in the world. In addition, the CT serves as the spawning and juvenile growth areas for what is the largest tuna fishery in the world. 4

5 Threats to marine resources in CT areas: Over-fishing Illegal Unreported Unregulated (IUU) fishing Global climate change (e.g. coral bleaching) 5

6 Initiative for Global Coalition Multi-lateral Partnership President Yudhoyono raised the Coral Triangle Challenges in COP 8 CBD (2006) In August 2007, President Yudhoyono of Indonesia wrote to a group of other leaders proposing a new Coral Triangle Initiative. At their APEC Summit in September 2007, 21 heads of state from across Asia Pacific c welcomed ed the Coral Triangle Initiative in their formal declaration. 6

SOM2 held on October Agenda for SOM2: 1.the 1 st two days meeting of the CTI Coordination Committee to finalize the integrated inputs from the 6 countries for CTI ACTION Plan 2.the last day for the Senior Offiical Meeting to adopt the Plan of Action. 3. Five delegates per countries, with the possibilities of additional delegates as observers. 12

11 THE PREPARATION OF MINISTERIAL & CTI SUMMIT MEETING mid February Venue: in Madang Papua New Guinea 2.Agenda: (i) Adoption Action Plan by CT6 Countries at Ministerial Level (ii) Review of draft Joint Declaration (containing CTI Plan of Action); (ii) Finalization of Joint Declaration; and (iii) Discuss on preparation of Summit Meeting 13

12 THE PREPARATION OF MINISTERIAL & CTI SUMMIT MEETING CTI SUMMIT MEETING 1. Scheduled on May Venue: in Manado during the WOC 3. Agenda: (i) Adoption of a CTI Plan of Action by Coral Triangle Summit of leaders (ii) Declaration of CTI by Coral Triangle Summit of leaders (iii) Announcement a specific programs in each country to translate the CTI Plan of Action into tangible action. 14

13 CTI PLAN OF ACTIONS: OBJECTIVES Priority Seascapes designated and effectively managed. Ecosystem approach to management of fisheries and other marine resources fully applied Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) established and Effectively managed, including community-based resource utilization and management Climate change adaptation measures achieved Threatened species status improving 16

14 IMPORTANT RESULTS CCC1 ANCOL, INA Agree on high level strategies Agree to develop CTI Plan of faction at Country level. l Agree to revised roadmap such as CCC2 in Honiara on September, SOM 2 in Manila on October and Ministerial Meeting in PNG at mid February Adopt Jakarta Draft which contain part of CTI Plan of Action 17

15 IMPORTANT RESULTS CCC2 HONIARA Agree on NEW FORMAT of CTI Plan of Action which contain Goal, Target, Regional Actions and National Actions. Agree to prepare p draft of ministerial joint statement and draft of Leader Declaration. Discuss on options of Instititutional Arrangement including funding mechanism. 17

AGREED TO CONDUCT CCC4.
