2 Health and human service systems worldwide are searching for solutions to address a range of health system challenges: family and community health, infectious and chronic diseases, mental health, the shortage of health services and resources, effective development and integration of new technological systems. Addressing the many health issues faced by Canada s increasingly diverse population is both a complex and rewarding task. The health system is more encompassing and multi-faceted than ever before, and the demand for highly trained and educated health professionals will undoubtedly continue to expand well into the future. To help meet this growing demand, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology s (UOIT) Health Sciences graduate program focuses on three key specialty areas: A message from the director Community health; Health informatics; and Kinesiology. Our graduate program will provide you with an opportunity to explore and examine the complexities of health and health care, and develop research skills in the area of health science. You will work with top researchers within your chosen field of study, to design, conduct, and complete a significant research project that culminates in a master s thesis. Collaborations with government, corporations, health-care institutions, and community partners are available to broaden the scope and impact of your research. The strong research foundation and area expertise you develop in the program will prepare you to take leadership positions within the health-care field, to seek funding for projects or research to be undertaken at the workplace, or to pursue a PhD or another advanced degree in a research-oriented health sciences or related program. 3 Master of Health Sciences in Community Health The MHSc in Community Health focuses on the analysis of environmental and social conditions implicated in community health and wellness. As a student you will learn to employ quantitative or qualitative research methods to examine, analyze, and gain an understanding of these conditions. This research provides the foundation for developing strategies to promote wellness in communities. These strategies operate at various levels and involve community organizing, policy, health education and lifestyle approaches. Areas of community health research may include, but are not limited to: Chronic disease management; Health professions and health policy; Health and wellness of vulnerable populations; HIV and other infectious diseases; Inequalities in health and illness; and Mental health and illness. CAREERS The MHSc in Community Health will prepare you to serve in various positions in community, corporate, or government agencies to investigate and develop strategies for the promotion of health and well-being among diverse communities. Your graduate education also will prepare you to pursue a PhD or another advanced degree in community health or related areas.

4 Master of Health Sciences in Health Informatics Education and research in UOIT s MHSc in Health Informatics will prepare you to identify, develop, and manage information systems that support health-care administration, policy, training, clinical management and clinical research. The Health Informatics program focuses on the effective use of health information and informatics technologies to improve health and health-care delivery. In UOIT s state-of-the-art health informatics laboratories, you will collaborate with cutting-edge researchers to employ the latest approaches in health informatics research. Areas of health informatics research include, but are not limited to: Cloud computing in health care; Impact of technology; Mobility in health care; Knowledge discovery in health care; Real-time decision aids; Serious games in health care; and Security and reliability in health care. CAREERS The MHSc in Health Informatics will prepare you to serve in diverse health-care settings wherein you may analyze clinical data, offer various clinical informatics services, or design, implement and manage health informatics systems. Your graduate education will also prepare you to pursue a PhD or another advanced degree in health informatics-related areas.

5 Master of Health Sciences in Kinesiology As a student in the MHSc in Kinesiology program you will learn the skills necessary to identify, address, and overcome the increasingly complex health-related challenges that influence the health and wellness of individuals and their communities. You will work with diverse faculty on the current research areas contributing to the field. These include: Asymmetry of hand preference as a model of chronic adaptive plasticity; Barriers to full participation in physical activity; Exercise induced neural adaptations; Mechanisms to enhance appropriate motor learning for injury prevention and rehabilitation; The role of exercise in promoting neural function; The role of the spinal cord in the production of rhythmic and non-rhythmic movements; and The reciprocal relationship between motor development and physical activity in both healthy and developmentally delayed children. You will have the option of diverse research experiences in the kinesiology area ranging from intensive laboratory-based studies with human populations to interventional studies with special populations. CAREERS The MHSc in Kinesiology will prepare you for a career in rehabilitation, sport science, research and non-profit and government agencies. As a graduate you may also apply your MHSc as a stepping stone to enter professional schools to pursue a wide range of fields including: medicine, chiropractic medicine, physical therapy or occupational therapy. Your graduate education will also prepare you to pursue a PhD or another advanced degree in kinesiology-related areas.

6 Program map Full-time students should complete their degree requirements five courses (two required, three elective) and a master s thesis within two years. YEAR 1 Semester 1 (fall) Specialty area course (required): Studies in Community Health (Community Health); or Patient Journey Modelling (Health Informatics); or Studies in Kinesiology (Kinesiology). Elective 1 Semester 2 (winter) Research in the Health Sciences (develop thesis research proposal) (required) Elective 2 Semester 3 (spring/summer) Complete thesis research proposal Begin thesis research YEAR 2 Semester 1 (fall) Continue thesis research Elective 3: Research-in-progress colloquium; or Other elective. Semester 2 (winter) Master s thesis and degree completion Semester 3 (spring/summer) (if required) Master s thesis and degree completion Admission requirements ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS: Completion of a four-year honours undergraduate degree or its equivalent from a recognized institution; Minimum overall academic standing of a B (GPA: 3.0 on a 4.3 scale or 73 to 76 per cent), with a minimum B average in the last two full-time years (four semesters) of undergraduate work or equivalent; and Undergraduate preparation in research methods in either quantitative or qualitative analysis. This should include experience and training in statistics. Applicants planning to study health informatics also should have training or experience with computing or information technology within the health-care domain.
