2 ARE YOU INTERESTED IN LEARNING ABOUT HEALTH AND HEALTH- RELATED ISSUES? At Monmouth University, students learn about current health issues as well as receiving the supporting analytical skills needed to evaluate issues and policies. Additionally, they will develop an understanding of the link between new research in health science and the development of healthcare strategies and policies. I feel extremely lucky to have found a major I love. Between the helpful professors and the friendly students, I m always reminded why I chose Monmouth University. Being a health studies major is both challenging and rewarding and I feel truly prepared to enter the world of healthcare. As a student on the journey to becoming a physician assistant, Monmouth University s Health Studies program has allowed me to understand the importance of my intended career and has done everything to help me to achieve my goals. Deanna Getty, 16 Graduates may prepare to work with individuals, groups, and families in health organizations and services, corporate health programs, education, and at the local, state, federal, or international level. Students can further their education by pursuing graduate degrees in areas such as medicine, nursing, dentistry, physical therapy, health and physical education, hospital and healthcare administration, public health, and many others. Pre-professional health advising that charts a uniform course of study under the mentorship of the Pre-Professional Health Advisory Committee (PPHAC) is available to students who intend to pursue careers as physicians and healthcare professionals. The need is rising for skilled experts to deal with all aspects of human health. The fields of wellness, healthcare, nutrition, physical education, community and global health, and complementary health therapies are growing at record rates. The level of health that individuals achieve is influenced by the choices they make, which also affects their ability to develop to their full potential. It is this dynamic that sits at the core of Monmouth s health programs. Students can major in: health studies health and physical education (non-teaching track) health and physical education/ education (K 12 endorsement) nursing (BSN)

3 MONMOUTH HEALTH PROGRAM GRADUATES WILL BE PREPARED TO SERVE AS LEADERS IN FIELDS THAT INTEGRATE HEALTH, WELLNESS, AND EDUCATION. The Bachelor of Science in Health Studies degree program at Monmouth University focuses on developing professionals who will promote health and prevent disease across diverse areas in medical, community, nonprofit, corporate, and government settings. The curriculum also offers a broad and intensive education in the relationship between lifestyle and health. The Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education combines 30 credits of health studies course work in areas such as nutrition, health promotion, human sexuality, and substance abuse, with 18 credits of physical education courses including exercise physiology and motor skill development. Students aspiring to careers in athletic training, physical therapy, or similar professions can use this program as preparation for graduate or professional schools. Those students interested in obtaining a K 12 teaching certification may major in Health and Physical Education, with an endorsement in K 12 Education in Health and Physical Education. This content is aligned with both the State of New Jersey certification requirements and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). NURSING AT MONMOUTH The nursing profession is experiencing a high demand for registered nurses to contribute to the healthcare needs of today s society. To be ahead of the curve, and to facilitate the needs of students committing to a career in nursing, Monmouth University is offering a pre-licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program aimed at providing a comprehensive opportunity for undergraduate students to earn their degree, and prepare for their RN license, in a dynamic learning environment. Monmouth is dedicated to preparing professional nurses to provide safe, competent, holistic care, and more. Nurses educated to the baccalaureate level are increasingly recognized as qualified generalists who advance in the field and who are eager to realize their full potential as future nurse leaders. Students begin hands-on clinical experience in the second semester of their first year. The liberal arts component of the program provides the groundwork for a comprehensive educational experience. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS (FOR FRESHMEN ONLY) BSN program admission requirements: Satisfy Monmouth s admission criteria for the University and for the BSN program Submit an essay that expresses an interest in, and commitment to, the nursing profession Demonstrate a strong background in the sciences Exposure to a healthcare setting or related experience is encouraged Check for the latest information on applying to the program. 4 NTERDISCIPLINARY Monmouth University is the only private university in New Jersey to offer an undergraduate health studies major. The University s health programs provide an interdisciplinary approach to information about health. These majors are designed to: increase knowledge about health and healthrelated topics allow students to gain knowledge about a variety of health disciplines enable students to communicate and learn how lifestyle choices may relate to the cause or prevention of disease expand interdisciplinary and comprehensive understanding of health issues facilitate student internships in health-related agencies and corporations Monmouth health program graduates will be prepared to serve as leaders in fields that integrate health, wellness, and education. Career paths include working in healthcare agencies, managing sports or wellness centers, working in community health departments, teaching, and working in global nonprofit agencies or other public and private healthcare sectors. Students are also prepared to undertake graduate studies in a variety of fields. A minor in health studies is open to students from a variety of majors who wish to enhance their knowledge about health and health-related issues for personal development, or to complement their major area of study.
