Public Health is the science and art of protecting and improving the health of communities through education, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and research for disease prevention. (ASPH, n.d.) Public Health is a field comprised of many health professions working toward one united goal: to promote population-based health and prevention. 7

13 Academic Preparation Healthy People 2020 includes a goal to increase public health degrees, minors, concentrations, and course work at all levels for all institutions of higher learning (bachelors, masters, PhD) PHI HP : Increase the proportion of 4-year colleges and universities that offer public health or related majors and/or minors. Addresses the lack of formal training for public health workers in the U.S. (Remember, 80% are not formally trained according to APHA) Responds to the Institute of Medicine s (IOM) 2003 charge to improve public health education and literacy of all citizens 13

19 BS Career Opportunities Injury Program Coordinator: The Center for Health Promotion, Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, seeks a full-time health professional to lead statewide injury prevention/educational program. Knowledge and experience in coalition building, health program planning, implementation and evaluation are desirable. (State of Maryland s Dept. of Health & Mental Hygiene) Emergency Management Coordinator: primary responsibility for facilitating the planning, implementation and post implementation phases of various strategic projects for the department. The Emergency Management Coordinator will determine the appropriate qualitative and quantitative measures to evaluate progress and successful implementation. These projects will result in measurable improvements that will impact clinical, administrative, financial systems, and/or the infrastructural systems of MMC and that will benefit our patients, families and staff. The Emergency Management Coordinator will also provide regular progress reporting to his/her supervisor and other groups as appropriate. (Maine Medical Center) 19
20 MPH Career Opportunities Program Manager: Manage and Develop Volunteer Corps; Oversee teams of undergraduate student volunteers; Build and develop relationships with volunteer corps through Reflection Sessions and daily presence at the desk; Guide volunteers professional and leadership development through training and mid-semester reviews; Collaborate with the national program staff to implement effective training design and delivery; Work with site leadership to analyze program design, strategy and program vision; Use program data to manage and improve desk operations (Health Leads- Community Health Center) Research Associate: Review and administer grants, including evaluating brief and full proposals, summarizing external technical reviews, reviewing budgets, and ongoing monitoring of existing grants. Write issue briefs, research summaries, meeting reports, newsletter articles, and memos. Update content and manage the program website and other electronic dissemination vehicles. Research and identify new and emerging trends in online/electronic media and develop strategies in support of program initiatives. Assist with the writing, editing and production of marketing and program materials, including web and social media content development and contributions to e-newsletters, blogs and other communications. 21 PhD Career Opportunities Assistant Professor: The successful applicant will teach both on-campus and online in the Health Administration tracks of our MPH, MPA and MBA programs, and in our AUPHA certified undergraduate program. (University of Michigan- Flint) Research Scientist/Director: serve as New York s state director of comprehensive Tobacco Control program. Will supervise a staff of 20 and an annual budget of $42 million. The Director will provide leadership, guidance and direction to the Tobacco Control Program, including the development, implementation, evaluation and dissemination of effective tobacco control and public health interventions; implement the program's strategic plan; and ensure that strategies and actions are in place to achieve program and Departmental tobacco goals and reduce youth and adult tobacco use.
