1 Graduate Faculty Committee Document 1250 Approved December 17, 2012 RECOMMENDATION OF THE SUBCOMMITTEE ON GRADUATE COURSE AND CURRICULUM, THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES RESEARCH AND GRADUATE PROGRAMS COMMITTEE, AND THE FACULTY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF OCCUPATIONAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR CHANGES TO THE MASTER OF SCIENCE IN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY I. Current Graduate School Bulletin Copy NOTE: Only sections that are changing have been included. Overview The Department of Occupational Therapy offers a Master of Science degree program in Occupational Therapy. There are two tracks: a Professional-Entry Track and a Post- Professional Track. Students in both tracks will receive graduate instruction and research for occupational therapists and may select a thesis option (Option A) or a non-thesis project option (Option B) in pursuing this degree program. Professional-Entry Track students will also be offered a comprehensive examination option (Option C) for the capstone requirement. Students who are interested can choose to combine elective courses from the OT program with other courses on campus to receive transcript-designated concentrations in assistive technology and accessible design and/or ergonomics. Professional-Entry Track Students wishing to pursue a career as an occupational therapist will select the Professional-Entry Track, which is a BS/MS program. Students with bachelor's degrees in other areas are welcome and encouraged to contact College of Health Sciences Student Services at for credit evaluation. Students can complete the undergraduate portion of the Occupational Therapy Professional Program either as Bachelor of Science in Occupational Studies candidates or, for applicants with a previous bachelor's degree, as special students. Post-Professional Track (Applications are no longer being accepted for this track) Students who are occupational therapists interested in advanced study in clinical practice, preparation for an academic career, or development of administrative skills will select the Post-Professional Track. Students in both tracks will receive graduate instruction in research for occupational therapists and may select a thesis or non-thesis option. Master of Science in Occupational Therapy Admission Applicants must have a BS in Occupational Therapy or Occupational Studies and meet Graduate School requirements. Those in the Professional-Entry Track may apply to enter the M.S. in O.T. in their final UWM undergraduate semester. Applicants to the Post-

II. Proposed Change Summary 1. Modify admission requirements including elimination of the requirement of completion of the undergraduate UWM Professional-Entry Occupational Therapy curriculum (or equivalent) 2. Eliminate the post-professional track. 3. Modify the program of study. III. Resource Implications One additional faculty member. IV. Justification for Proposed Changes 1. Based upon review of advances in the profession of occupational therapy and recommendations from department faculty committees, a professional entry occupational therapy program at the graduate level only is consistent with the clinical practice and scholarship expectations of our graduates when they enter the field. The proposed changes represent not only the most current knowledge in the occupational therapy, but also have the potential to advance the field and impact its future. We will also be able to attract the most well qualified applicants to our program. Every semester we receive dozens of inquiries from potential students who already have undergraduate degrees in related fields (e.g., sociology, health education, kinesiology, etc.) from excellent academic institutions in Wisconsin and beyond. These students are very interested in the profession of occupational therapy but unwilling to complete a second undergraduate curriculum; these students will now be able to qualify for entry directly into the MS in OT program. 2. The post-professional track was designed to advance knowledge in the profession by providing graduate-level education to individuals already credentialed as occupational therapists at the baccalaureate level. The profession has required that all entry-level occupational therapists have a post-baccalaureate degree since Consequently we have seen a decline in enrollment in the post-professional track. In the modified MS in OT program, all students will have graduate level education available in all required courses in the program. Also as noted in #1 above, there was often confusion among potential applicants as to the track for which they were qualified. Elimination of "tracks", with just one set of requirements for the MS in OT degree program, will do away with this confusion and streamline the process for students, the program and department, and the Graduate School. 3. We have updated the curriculum to reflect the most current knowledge and practices in the profession of occupational therapy. Courses will be offered at the UG level (U for highly motivated undergraduates at UWM who would like to meet program requirements earlier and thus have their schedules open for elective courses at the graduate level), or G level only. Specific requirements that will change are below. Required courses with no changes: OccThpy 725 Occupational Therapy Field Service I (6 cr) OccThpy 735 Occupational Therapy Field Service II (6 cr) Required course with minor change (new name)*:

4 Graduate Faculty Committee Document 1250 p. 4 Approved December 17, 2012 OccThpy 720 Advanced Application of Occupational Therapy Theory (3 cr) UG courses that will be required*: OccThpy 541 Evidence for Practice II (3 cr) (prereqs changed) OccThpy 620 Introduction to Assistive Technology (3cr) (prereqs changed) Elective Courses that will be required (credit and/or prereq change)*: OccThpy 710 Community Models of Occupational Therapy Practice (3 cr) OccThpy 810 Critical Evaluation of Theory, Research & Practice (3 cr) OccThpy 740 Topics in Pediatric Occupational Therapy (3 cr) *CARs submitted ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Many of the current required undergraduate courses in the BS in Occupational Studies program will be converted to UG or G courses with new numbers, names, descriptions, requirements, graduate level methods of instruction and graduate level methods of student evaluation of learning. CARs for these courses have been submitted and will be reviewed for approval concurrently with this program change. The revised or new required courses are listed here to assure that the content expertise for these courses is currently available; the level of learning will be elevated to the graduate level in all courses. Undergraduate courses that will be changed to UG (new number, name and description) OccThpy 315 Group Process (3cr) OccThpy 340 Evidence for Practice I (3cr) Undergraduate courses that will be changed to G (new number, name and description) OccThpy 301 Applied Neuroscience for Health Professionals (3cr) OccThpy 308 Musculoskeletal Pathology and Occupational Function (3cr) OccThpy 401 Overview of Medical Conditions (3 cr) OccThpy 405 Occupational Therapy in Physical Rehabilitation (3cr) OccThpy 411 Occupational Therapy and Psychosocial Rehabilitation (3cr) OccThpy 426 Occupational Therapy in Pediatrics II (3cr) OccThpy 330 Foundations of Professional Practice II (1-3cr) New courses: KIN 5XX Advanced Anatomical Kinesiology (3cr) OccThpy 7XX Professional Skills in Occupational Therapy (3cr) V. Proposed Graduate School Bulletin Copy Overview The Department of Occupational Science and Technology offers a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy that prepares students to become occupational therapists. During the program, students engage in graduate level instruction embedded in the theory, research, and clinical underpinnings required to become evidence-based occupational therapy practitioners. Students may select a thesis option or project option in pursuing this degree. Graduates of the program are eligible to take the occupational therapist certification
